Walking into her bedroom, Kat's first move was to kick off her shoes and unzip her skirt, letting it fall on the carpet. She threw off the rest of clothes and headed for the bathroom and into the shower. She stood still under the pulsing jets, steam coming from the glass cabin, aware of nothing but the sound of her heart beating. Then she felt something on her back that made her scream at the top of her lungs.
"Are you all right?" Shane asked her, a worried look on her face.
"What the hell are you doing?" Kat asked, turning around to face her naked, and wet, husband.
"Well, we're in a shower
naked
what do you think I'm doing?"
"You scared me half to death," Kat sighed, shutting off the shower and grabbing a towel.
"I'm being romantic."
"Scaring me shitless in the shower is romantic?"
"I thought
"
"Get out
out, out, out!"
Grumbling about crazy pregnant women and how erotic joint showers could be, Shane grabbed a towel and stomped out of the bathroom, leaving his wife to stare after him. Kat shook her head in disbelief before heading to the bedroom and changing into lounge pants and a long sleeved sweater. Sitting on her bed, she picked up the phone and called home.
"McMahon Residence," Alex said, picking up the phone.
"Hey honey."
"Mom! What's up?"
"Same shit, different shovel. You?"
"Same."
"How's your brother?"
"He's got another girlfriend."
"Oh God! Who?"
"Martine Duval."
"Your friend Martine?"
"Not anymore. I can't be friends with anyone who thinks Josh is hot. It's too nasty."
"Well, he's not ugly."
"You have to say that, you're his mom."
"True. Did you get the book I sent you?"
"The first edition of Star Wars? Yeah. I'm halfway through."
"Do you like it?"
"It's great! It's so much like the movie and it's not, you know?"
"Yeah, because you get to know what they're all thinking which the movie hints at but you don't know for sure."
"Exactly. I wish they would make a sequel."
"You, me and about a billion other Star Wars freaks."
"Yeah."
"Did you guys start packing for tomorrow?"
"Alan's had us packed for over two days. The man's anal."
"Don't we love him for it."
"Yeah. Can I talk to Dad?"
"Ah
uh, your dad's a little busy now. Can he call you back?"
"Mom, Josh and I were talking
well, I was talking and he was too dumb to pay attention and
are you guys getting a divorce?"
"Excuse me?"
"Annie's parents got a divorce last year and I think the same thing is happening here."
"You do?"
"Alan and I watch soaps Mom. I know the symptoms."
Kat leaned back against the headboard and pressed her palm to her forehead. Her kids always shocked her with their maturity but this one took the cake. She'd been a sensitive child but Alex was virtually psychic.
"No, we're not getting a divorce. Your father and I just
we had a misunderstanding."
"Did he cheat on you?"
"Excuse me? Okay, Alex your father and I aren't getting a divorce, is that clear? He didn't cheat on me. We're just having some trouble. We'll fix it."
"Do you promise?"
The plea in her daughter's voice made Kat's heart tighten. She swept tears from her eyes and nodded, even though she knew Alex couldn't see her nod.
Shane worked on his computer, going through all the pictures taken for SMACKDOWN and making sure everything was looking just right when Kat came into the guest suite after the infamous kiss. His wife was wearing tight black leather pants and a crisp white shirt that was buttoned over her breasts and nowhere else.
"Let's go out to dinner," she said with a smile, "put on something sexy and meet me downstairs."
"Kat
"
"Just do it Shane."
That night, Kat and Shane had dinner at their favorite Stamford restaurant and talked and talked and talked until it was past midnight. They laughed a lot and after the restaurant, Shane dragged Kat into one of his former high school hangouts. The place was packed with kids and once the McMahons hit the dance floor, there was no getting them off it. They danced to everything, hip hop, rock, R&B, often finding themselves in each other's arms.
Shane climbed the staircase, his wife's curvaceous body pressing into his and as he listened to her talk, he wondered how he could have been stupid enough to believe he'd fallen out of love with her. He nuzzled her neck and held her tight as they made their way to the master bedroom. Shane threw open the door and walked in, taking a deep breath.
"I missed this room," he sighed, turning around to find his wife standing in the doorway, staring at him. "Aren't you coming in?"
"Yes. When you come out."
"But I thought
aren't we reconnecting?"
"Yes
but I'm not ready to share a bed with you yet."
"Maybe we could just sleep in the same bed
you know, to get used to each other?"
"Shane
"
"Kat
if we take it too slow
"
"All right
but we share a bed and a PJ
you get the bottom, I get the top, ok?"
Shane grinned happily.
Kat woke up feeling warmer than she'd felt in a long, long while. Most of Shane's body was sprawled on top of hers, a thin sheet separating them. And faithful as ever, his morning woody was burning a hole into her thigh. She closed her eyes and tightened her arms around her husband's body, letting his weight and natural boy heat ward off the cold of the coming day.
"Morning," he mumbled into her neck.
"Bonjour."
"Oooh French
you know what that does to me."
"Oh, we so are not the Addams family."
"Funny how I'd still love to see you in one of those ultra long tight black dresses though."
"I'm sure you would. But the thought of calling you Gomez? So not a turn on."
"Calling me Shane is?"
"It's better than Gomez," Kat whispered, looking into her husband's eyes.
"Yeah
how did you sleep?"
"Like a baby. You?"
"Same. Better than I've slept in ages."
Shane reached out and caressed his wife's cheek, smiling as she moaned in the back of her throat.
"Shane," she sighed.
"Yes, I know
it's too soon."
"Exactly."
"Doesn't make me want you less though."
"I know. But we have to get up anyways. We have to be in Seattle before the twins."
"Why are we letting them come on the road again?"
"Something about a three-day weekend and yes
they think we're getting a divorce."
Kat rolled out of bed as she said that but not fast enough. Shane grabbed the back of her pyjama top and pulled her back down to the bed.
"Excuse me?"
"The twins have been talking and they sensed something was up between up between you and me."
"Those kids are too smart for us."
"I know."
"What did you tell them?"
"I told Alex that we were having trouble and that we were working on it."
"Oh. That why you came to see me last night? Because of Alex?"
"Yes and no. Shane, I'm pregnant with your baby. I love you, as a husband and a father and I don't want to lose you. Talking to Alex just drove that home."
"I am so sorry I kissed her," Shane whispered, pressing his forehead against his wife's.
"I know Shane. I know."
With a light kiss to the corner of her husband's mouth, Kat went into the bathroom to shower.
"Mom!" Alex dropped her bag on the floor and ran at full speed into her mother's outstretched arms.
Kat almost fell over as Alex's small body hit hers at full force. Had it not been for Shane standing behind her, she would have fallen flat on her back.
"Happy to see me?" Kat asked.
"Yeah! Hi Daddy!"
"What? I don't get a throw me on the ground hug?"
"No
those are Mommy hugs!"
"Well, I'm jealous. Where's your brother?"
"He's flirting with the stewardess."
"That's my..." Shane's prideful exclamation dies in his throat when Kat pins him with a look laden in meaning, "
boy."
Next to the doorway, Josh was indeed talking up a young stewardess, making her blush even. Shane hurried over and pried her son away from her, grabbing Alex's bag on the way.
"Hello Don Juan," Kat said bending down to peck her son's cheek.
"Hey Mom, no touching
ruining the action," Josh said, turning around to grin at his conquest.
"Excuse me?"
"I'm too cool for kisses from Mom, you know? I'm a man now."
"He's such an idiot," Alex sighed, pulling on her mother's hand.
"Yeah, ok
we'll go with that."
"So, how are the reconciliation plans?" Josh asked his parents. "If it's not looking so good, I just want to know, am I living with Mom or Dad?"
"Actually, your dad and I thought we might ship you off to an all-boy boarding school. To curb your flirting tendencies, you know?"
"I think it's a very worthwhile idea Josh. I mean, it'll give you time to focus on your studies."
"And what about Alex?"
"Well," Kat said, stroking her daughter's curly hair, "since she doesn't have such a flirtation problem, I was thinking she might join us on the road more."
"Unfair! Is it my fault I'm irresistible?"
"You're not irresistible. And anyhow, Jeff is much more irresistible."
"Is not!"
"Oh," Kat said, "you're my son and I love you but yes, Jeff is hotter."
"MOM!"
"But he's not hotter than Dad, right?" Alex asked, turning around to look at her parents, "right?"
Kat turned around to look at her husband's hopeful smile and she didn't just see the distinguished gentleman smiling at her
she saw the young man who'd shown up unexpectedly on her doorstep
she saw her groom at the altar
she saw her babies' father, soaking wet after giving the twins a bath
"Yes," she grinned, "Jeff is hotter than Dad."
"Give me a second kids, I'll change her mind."
Dropping the bags on the ground, Shane gathered Kat in his arms and tipped her over with a flourish, landing a long kiss on her lips while Alex and Josh cheered them on. By the time he pulled her back to her feet, Kat didn't want to let go.
"Is Jeff still hotter than me?"
Kat giggled and turned to her daughter and son who both eagerly awaited her answer. She tossed her hair over her shoulder, picked up Josh's bag and walked away. Then she turned to her family with a grin and asked, "Jeff who?"
