Notes: The Shane muse is one greedy bitch.
Shane pulled up in front of the elementary school and waited for the bell to ring. This was the last day before the start of the Christmas vacations and Katia and him had flown down specially to surprise the kids and take them to Stamford for the holidays. Today was even more special since it was a Tuesday, one of the few both him and his wife for to spend with the kids.
Finally, the bell rang and the kids seemed to flow out of the school like a tidal wave, their faces wreathed in smiles since it was the start of one of their favorite holidays. Shane waited and finally saw his son, bouncing up and down with a few of his friends, boys he knew from having seen them lying on their stomachs playing video games in the game room. He probably knew their shirt sizes from bringing home what often felt like dozens of tee-shirts for Alexandra and Joshua's friends.
"Josh!" he called, opening the car door.
"Dad!"
With a wave to his friends, Josh ran straight into his father's arms, laughing and talking a mile a minute.
"What's up little man?"
"Today was the last day before Christmas and Santa came and gave presents and I got a train set and it's not as cool as the one Grandpa Vince gave me last year but it's cool too because it doesn't go with electricity but it's magnets. Well, that's what Corinne, my teacher, said, and it's really cool because the passengers never fall, even when I turn it upside down, because of the magnets too and I got a paint set with it, which totally rocks because I'll be able to paint the faces the color I want and I'm going to get Grandma Bernadette to do that with me because she's the painter and she's gone to Haiti. Her and Grandpa Antoine left yesterday and they gave us our presents in advance and they told us not to open them but it's really hard but I think she gave me a paint set and she's going to take me painting with her next summer and I can't wait cause my teacher said I had an eye for color but I don't get that Dad because I have two eyes don't I?"
Shane started laughing as he hugged his little boy as tightly as he could. Josh was definitely the talker of the family.
"Yes you do, you have two eyes."
"But how come she said I had an eye for color and not eyes for it?"
"It's an expression."
"Oh."
"Do you know what that means?"
"No, but I'm still a little kid. I've got time to learn, don't I?"
"Yes you do. Where's your sister?"
"I don't know. She's always so slow. Do I really have to wait for her to go home?"
"Yes."
"But she's so slow," Josh said, rolling his eyes for emphasis.
"Always wait for your sister Josh. You don't want to know how grounded you'll get if you don't."
"Fine. But she takes forever every day."
"She's a woman, it's part of her genetic make-up."
"Huh?"
"You'll understand when you're older."
Shane was about to go inside the school to get Alexandra when she finally came out of the school. She didn't see him right away, busy as she was talking to a little boy.
"Who's that," Shane asked his son.
"Oh," Josh said, glancing up from his seat. "That's Jean-Marc."
"Who's Jean-Marc?"
"He's Alex's boyfriend."
"Her what?"
Shane's eyes narrowed on the little kid with an unruly mop of brown curls as he leaned over to his daughter and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"Why that little."
Alex blushed to a color as close to pink as her light brown skin could get before leaning over and pecking Jean-Marc's cheek. That gesture made Shane see red.
"Alexandra McMahon!"
"Daddy!"
"Get your butt inside that car this instant, young lady."
"But Daddy."
"Right now!"
With a sad look to Jean-Marc, Alex ran to the car and climbed into it, sitting next to Josh in the backseat. Shane slammed the door shut and got behind the wheel, sending the little boy still staring at Alex a mean look.
"Are we going somewhere?" Josh asked.
"No."
"Then why are we in such a hurry?"
"We're not in a hurry."
"But... Alex was just talking to..."
"My daughter doesn't have boyfriends! She'll never have boyfriends as long as I'm alive."
"But Daddy," Alex said, "Jean-Marc's my best friend and."
"Well, you're not allowed to talk to him anymore."
"But Daddy."
"No! I have heard enough."
Katia was finishing up Alex and Josh's favorite meal of corn dogs and curly fries when she heard the car pull into the driveway. She hurried to the front door and got there in time to see Alex rush into the house and slam the thick door shut before toeing off her boots and running up the stairs.
"Alex, honey, what's wrong?"
"I hate Daddy! He's mean!"
Eyes wide, Katia started to follow her up the stairs only to hear Shane rush in after her, Josh in tow.
"Alexandra McMahon!"
"What did you do?" Kat asked him from the bottom steps.
"Nothing!"
"Shane, don't lie to me. You did something to her or our seven-year old daughter wouldn't say she hates you right now!"
"Daddy told her she couldn't talk to Jean-Marc anymore," Josh provided as he hung his coat.
"Why not?"
"Because that little delinquent kissed her!"
"Delinquent? Jean-Marc? Shane, he's a bookworm!"
"A kissing bookworm!"
"He likes Alex, that's all."
"Josh said he was her boyfriend."
"As much as a little seven year old girl can have a boyfriend. You want to know the truth of it?"
"Yeah?"
"As much as Alex loves Josh, Jean-Marc is the only boy she knows who reads as much as she does and likes the same books as her. They read together, that's all."
"You sure? He kissed her."
"It was harmless, I'm sure."
"Cause there's no way in hell my seven-year old daughter gets a boyfriend. You hear me, no chance in hell!"
"You sound exactly like your father," Katia said, smiling up at her husband.
"God," Shane sighed, sitting on the staircase, "I am not ready for her to be kissing any boys. at all!"
"What are you going to do seven years from now when she wants to date?"
"Lock her up in her room and never let her out."
"Shane."
"Ok, maybe not my best idea but I have seven years to come up with a better plan."
"True. But I suggest you go and talk with Alex before she decides she really hates you."
"Do I have to?"
"Yes. Off you go little man."
While Shane made his way up the stairs to Alex and Josh's room, Josh had taken his new train set and was showing it to his mommy.
"See?" he said while he demonstrated, "they don't fall. even when they're upside down."
"That is so cool Josh!"
"I know. But don't tell Grandpa Vince about it. He might think I don't like the one he gave me."
"I'm sure he knows you liked it."
"How? How does he know I liked it?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, daddy and him played with it more than I did."
"Well."
"Maybe we should get Grandpa Vince a train set of his own for Christmas so he can let me play with the one he gave me."
Katia chuckled and hugged her little boy, laying a kiss on top of his curly hair. Holding him tight, she listened as he told her about her day and she smiled to herself. He was the best little boy any mother could have hoped for, even if he talked more than anyone she'd ever met. Come to think of it, she'd been a talker at his age. It was probably a genetic flaw. Well, she just had to make sure her mother never told Shane about the eight-hour trips to New York when little Katia had kept the family entertained with her stories. on the way there and back.
