Part 6:
"All right," Mr. Briscoe says right before the end of his gym class, "next week's gym classes are going to be taking place at the ice rink. We'll play a little hockey and do some figure skating. So bring your skates...and if you don't have any skates, come and see me now."
While most of the class groans at Mr. Briscoe's announcement, Kat has to stop herself from clapping in glee. Chyna and Debra shake their heads at her giddiness while Steve chuckles from across the room.
"You guys are coming to the regionals, right?" she asks her two best friends as they head for the locker rooms.
"Wouldn't miss it. Even Steve's looking forward to it."
"Cool. I'm so stressed out though."
"You guys will do great."
Kat smiles and spots Raven watching her. He's been doing that a lot over the past month...just watching her. Scares her shitless. Not to mention Jehri-curl who's still making a nuisance of himself.
"Ok...so what are you guys doing for the prom?" Debra asks her friends as they all three head for the showers.
"Getting drunk and going for a long drive, why?"
"Seriously. It's our senior prom! You guys have to go."
"These two losers can stay home," Stacey, Stephanie's best friend, giggles as she passes by them.
"Aw...that just hurt the fuck out of my feelings," Chyna says.
"Me too...I think I'm gonna cry."
Sobbing dramatically, Chyna and Kat fall into each other's arms. Stacey snickers and walks away.
"Dykes," she mutters before walking away.
"And proud of it!" Chyna shouts.
"The two of you are awful," Debra laughs.
"You just want to get in on some threesome action."
"That too."
It's the day of the skating regionals and Kat's coming out of the bathroom for the third time. Cheryl's standing by with a bottle of water and a smile.
"You have to breathe girl."
"Breathe? What's breathe?"
"What you should be doing instead of throwing up."
"But upchucking is so soothing," Kat sighs.
"You guys are going to do great out there. You two are skating at state level, not regional. You're going to majorly kick ass."
"I wish I had your confidence."
"Shane McMahon, Kathryn Jones?"
The trio turns around to face the skating official standing next to them.
"Yes?"
"You two are up next."
Kat, Shane and Cheryl follow her to the edge of the rink and wait for the other couple to leave the ice. The couple remove their blade protectors and hit
the ice.
"All right everybody," Mr. Briscoe says, "get on the ice and I'll show you what I want you to do."
Amidst giggles and near falls, the class gets on the ice and watch as Mr. Briscoe demonstrates the circuit he expects them to do around barrels and cones. He then turns to Kat.
"Miss Jones, you're up first."
"Thanks."
With an ease that startles the rest of her classmates, Kat does the required circuit in 40 seconds flat.
"You guys don't have to do it just as fast but try leaving the cones and barrels in one piece."
The next half hour is full of giggles and laughter as many fall and knock over Mr. Briscoe's circuit. Finally, he's graded everyone and has the boys remove the accessories from the ice.
"Now," he says as he bundles everyone off the ice, "you kids get a special treat. The skating regionals were this weekend and I've got my hands on the two young people who won the couples competition and they're going to perform for us. So get comfortable."
The lights went dim and music from Tchaikovsky's
Swan Lake begins as Kat and Shane hit the ice, clad in white and moving in perfect synchronization. Their performance is not as crisp as their regionals' performance but it is great and Shane even surprises Kat when he nails his triple axel. They close with the spiral of death, leaving Kat on her back on the ice, her head cradled in Shane's lap.
Everyone jumps to their feet and clap as Shane and his partner skate to the bench.
"You guys were amazing!" Chy gushes, hugging her friend. "That was so cool."
"Gawd," Debra drawls, "y'all made me cry."
"Uh...that was uh...cool," Steve admits reluctantly.
"Thanks."
"Cool stuff Kat," Hunter says, shaking her hand, "that was nice work."
"Thanks."
"Shane my man, I had no clue you skated like this."
"It's a thing... my folks and Steph didn't know until I told my folks this morning and Steph just now."
"Shit... I'm going to hear about this forever man."
"Sorry."
Stephanie is right behind her boyfriend, a thunderous look on her face.
"I bet the two of you are proud of yourselves, right?"
"Winning the regionals? Yeah, we're real proud."
"Screw the regionals! Of humiliating me this way!"
"Get off it Stephanie! Dad lied to you. The world does not revolve around you, all right?"
Stephanie stomps away and Kat turns to Shane.
"I'm sorry."
"Screw her... I'm doing what I want, regardless of her quest for limitless popularity."
"Sweet."
"You know what," Jehri-curl says as he approaches the couple, "you two looked good... you looked really good... but Kat would have looked better with me out there."
"Hate to break it to you Chris," Kat grins, "but you're too short."
"But powerful on the ice. You should try me."
"I'll pass, thanks."
"You're missing out honey."
"I'll take my chances..."
"Your loss..."
"Sure..."
"Kat's got a boyfriend," Shane starts singing in her ear, "Kat's got a boyfriend."
"Shut your yap," Kat hisses, skating away from him.
Shane and Kat horse around on the ice for a few minutes and are about to leave when she spots Raven. She's about to ignore him when he approaches her.
"Listen, I know you hate my guts but I have a favor to ask you."
"And you think I'd spit on you if you were on fire because?"
Shane laughs out loud at that, earning himself an elbow in the ribs.
"I take it she doesn't like you?"
"I'm guessing she likes your sister more than she likes me."
"That's not a good thing."
"He's an ass," Kat provides.
"Who needs your help."
"My help... doing what?"
"I don't know how to skate..."
"What?"
"Mr. Briscoe allowed me to do a do over for today but I don't know how to skate and I need to learn."
"And you want me to teach you? You want to get on the cold, hard ice with me... with virtual weapons on my feet?"
"I'm desperate."
"Must be," Shane quips, "I mean, if she hates you that much and you're willing to ask for her help."
"Bite me Shane."
"No he won't," Cheryl says, coming to stand next to us, "he's not to bite anyone but me."
"I'm grateful... trust me."
"So," Raven asks Kat, "will you do it?"
"Do what?"
"See," Shane explains to his patient girlfriend and coach, "Raven here needs to learn how to skate and Mr. Briscoe recommended Kat as a teacher. Only thing is, she hates him as much as she hates my sister."
"More," Kat corrects.
"And you're willing to get on the ice with her? Knowing she's a vengeful bitch on skates?"
"Yeah... if I don't do it, I flunk phys ed and if that happens, I flunk too many classes to graduate."
"Ah damn you," Kat sighs, "did you have to have such a convincing sob story?"
"Will you do it?"
"Meet me here at five."
"That's really nice of you. I appreciate it."
"Yeah, whatever... I guess that means I'm skipping practice tonight."
"Cool," Shane grins at his girlfriend, "that means I might get to have sex tonight."
"Not if you tell the whole world."
"But baby..." Shane whines as Cheryl walks away confidently, knowing he will follow her and do her bidding.
"They're... interesting," Raven chuckles.
"That's one word for it," Kat chuckles. Then her face gets serious again, "Now you, be here at five...or else."
Part 7:
"You didn't expect me to show up, did you?" Raven asks Kat as she sits on a bench, busily getting ahead on her chemistry homework, her skates on.
"I wasn't sure," she admits as she puts away her books, "You ready?"
"Let me put these on, ok?"
"Sure. I'll go warm up."
Once he's done with his skates, Raven gingerly gets up and wobbles to the ice. Kat's waiting for him with a chair.
"You going to beat me over the head with it?"
"After I help you graduate. Get on the ice and hold on to the back of the chair, ok?"
"All right..."
Raven puts his left foot on the ice and when it starts moving away from him, he snatches it back, disrupting his balance. Arms flailing, he starts sinking down to the ice, grabbing a hold of Kat, bringing her to the ice next to him.
"Ok, this isn't going to work. Get on your knees and hold on to the chair. I'm going to sit on it to make sure it doesn't get away from you. Can you do that?"
"Yeah... I think."
Getting Raven up on his skates proves to be a challenge but once that's done, the rest is easy. After about an hour, he's ready to let go of the chair. Kat's standing in front of him and her gloved hands are extended to him.
"Do you trust me?" she asks him as he clutches the railing.
"Yeah."
"Then give me your hands."
"No."
"Come on... it'll be easy, you'll see."
"I'll fall and you'll laugh."
"I'll do no such thing."
"I don't believe you."
"Raven, I spent an hour getting you on your skates, you think I'm about to give up now? You don't know me. Now give me your hands."
Reluctantly, Raven's hands uncurl from the railing and tighten around Kat's fingers.
"Good," she smiles, "now, don't move your feet...just let me trail you, ok?"
"Ok..."
They skate around the empty rink for a good fifteen minutes until Kat brightly smiles at her rapt pupil.
"Hate to break it to you there but you're skating man."
Raven looks down and sees his feet moving. In his excitement, he completely ruins his balance and before he knows it, he's lying flat on his stomach, Kat's skated foot, tapping next to his head.
"This time," she announces as she skates away, "you get up on your own."
Raven struggles to his feet and when he's up, Kat comes to a halt about five feet away from him.
"Try skating to me."
The initial protest dies on Scott's lips and he starts moving slowly. As soon as he's about to reach Kat, she skates away, forcing him to play catch up.
And without realizing it, he's skating.
"Thanks a lot," Kat grins at Scott over a vegetarian submarine.
"It was the least I could do. Hell, I know how to skate."
"So I'm a good teacher."
"I'm an exemplary pupil."
"Sure... whatever..."
"Wasn't I?"
"Yeah," she smiles, "you kind of were..."
"Does that mean you like me now?"
"Let's just say you're ranking above Stephanie."
"Thank God. So when am I going to see you at the Olympics?"
"In about four years."
"Confident?"
"You saw us. Shane and I are good. And Cheryl's an amazing coach. We'll be there in four years."
"And I'll be able to say I knew you when."
"Yeah. You should be duly impressed."
"I am."
Kat takes a bite out of her sandwich before looking up at Raven and smiling.
"So what's your deal?"
"My deal?"
"The whole darkly brooding thing... the cigarette thing..."
"Ah... well, I just am not fond of color."
"That's too bad...you'd look lovely in lavender...it'd be a perfect match for your eyes."
"You sound like my mother."
"She wants you to wear lavender?" Kat asks with a grin.
"She'd like me to be Mr. Sunshine."
"I don't see you much as a sunshiny fellow. It suits you, this mysterious aura of yours."
"It does?"
"Some might even say it's sexy..."
"I'm sexy?"
"I said some... not necessarily me."
"So I'm not sexy?"
Kat blushes and bites her lower lip, looking up at Raven, his long dark curls covering his face, his full pouty lips and her cheeks heat up.
"You're sexy."
"Cool."
"Yeah."
The young woman picks up her can of diet Sprite and starts gulping it down until it's empty. When she puts it down, her throat is still parched and she feels like someone lit a fire in the pit of her stomach that's making her woozy.
"Thirsty?" Raven asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Uh...what?"
"You just finished up my drink."
"Oh my God..."
"Yeah... thirsty?"
"No... not really...I didn't realize..."
"Do I make you nervous?"
"You, of course you don't. Don't be ridiculous."
"Cool...care to tell me why your left leg is creating an earthquake under the table?"
"It is not."
Raven's right hand slides under the table and touches her shaking leg. Kat jumps out of her chair, dropping her sandwich on her plate.
"You were saying?"
"God damn you!" she hisses angrily.
"There's nothing wrong with being attracted to me, you know...I happen to be a nice guy."
"I know," she whispers slowly.
"No you don't...you really don't...but you should know..."
Kat shivers and briefly wonders what Raven's lips will taste like.
Part 8:
"So he kissed you?" Debra asks with a smile.
"Yeah."
"And?"
"Aw shit Deb, who cares?" Steve whines. "God, like I care about whether or not that freak kissed her."
"Then don't listen."
"Ugh..."
"And?"
"I didn't know... Al was a good kisser but Raven is just... wow..."
"That good?"
"My knees melted. And that hair of his... God..."
While Kat and Debra gush Chris makes his arrival. He sits next to Kat, sighing loudly, waiting to be noticed... which doesn't happen, at least he doesn't get noticed by Kat.
"It's useless," Steve mutters, "they're talking about a guy Kat likes."
"Really?" Chris grins, "I knew it was bound to happen but so soon?"
"How the hell did you know?"
"Well, I've been told I'm pretty much irresistible..."
"You? They ain't talking about you... they're talking about him," Steve says, nodding toward Raven as he comes into class.
Chris' eyes go wide as Debra nudges Kat and she turns around to look at the curly haired hunk. Dumbfounded and shocked, Chris has no choice but to watch as Raven makes his way to their table and to Kat.
"Hey teacher," he whispers into her ear.
"Hey yourself."
"How are you?"
"Not bad. You?"
"I'm all right."
"Raven, do you know my friends, Steve Austin and Debra McMichael?"
"Hi Raven," Debra says with a tiny wave.
"Debra, Steve, I've seen you two around school."
"Yeah... us too."
"I'm Chris by the way," Jericho interrupts when he realizes Kat's not going to introduce him, "I'm Kat's lab partner. And her friend."
"About the lab partner part... what would you say to switching?"
"We can't switch," Kat protests, "Mr. Patterson won't let us."
"He will if Chris asks for the switch."
"Which I won't."
"Come on man..."
"Raven," Kat finally says, "I appreciate the gesture but I think that for now, I'll keep working with Chris."
"If you're sure?"
"I'm sure."
"I'll catch you after class then."
"Yeah."
"I can't believe he just did that," Debra gushes, "it was so romantic."
"It was nice, wasn't it?"
"What's his problem anyway?" Chris asks sullenly.
"I guess he likes her," Steve shrugs.
Before Chris can say anything else, Mr. Patterson kicks off the class. While their teacher drones on and on about the periodical table, the blond sneaks a few looks at Kat. He catches her watching Raven and instead of taking detailed notes, as per her habit, she spends most of the class doodling her nameand Raven's on the sheets, drawing hearts and looking very distracted. Finally, it's time for their practical assignment and Chris sidles up to Kat.
"So you and the freak, huh?"
"Excuse me?"
"You and Raven... you looked pretty tight there."
"Raven and I are none of your business."
"I'm just concerned for you. I mean, the guy's reputation leaves a lot to be desired."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Kat asks, turning around to face Chris.
"He likes guys you know."
"Are you trying to say that I might remind him of a guy?"
"No... but you know... that means he's into weird stuff..."
"Chris, if you're concerned, that's nice and I appreciate it. But Raven and I really aren't anyone's business but ours, all right?"
"Sorry."
"Let's do this, ok?"
When Chyna sees Kat and Raven headed for her, his arm around her waist, she's tempted to run in the other direction. It's not that she's not happy for her friend, but the loneliness is getting to her. And the fact that she still has feelings for Hunter really doesn't help. She turns around and sees him at his locker, getting his books out while Stephanie is talking to him. Then, as if he feels her eyes on him, he turns around and looks at her. Their eyes lock and hold for a moment but then Steph reclaims his attention.
"Hey hon," Kat says, opening her locker door, "you okay?"
"I'm fine... I just got lost there for a second."
"Ok."
"Hey Chy."
"Raven... she's still buying that you're a decent human being?"
"She's only been with me for a week, she hasn't had the time to discover all of my dark nasty secrets yet."
"And I bet there are plenty of those."
"A bunch."
"Why does that make me want to discover every one of them?" Kat asks Chyna with a smile.
"You're a nut?"
"Probably."
"So what are you girls up to this weekend?" Raven asks.
"Well, it looks like Debra and Chyna are dragging me out on a shopping spree this Saturday."
"You are so on your own."
"Coward..."
"Sure... listen, if you find time for me, let me know. We could go out to the movies or something."
"All right."
"Gotta run... barely have time for a cigarette."
"You are a couple now..." Chyna says as Raven quickly heads for the doors.
"Are we?" Kat asks her friend, "I never know for sure."
"Yeah, you are... is it nice?"
"Yeah... it is... weird though... I think about him at the weirdest times."
"How far has he gotten?" Chyna asks as they walk to their English class.
"Just kissing... I am so not ready for more."
"Kat, come on... you're hardly a virgin... I mean Al and you were pretty hot and heavy."
"I am a virgin," Kat whispers, "Al and I never went all the way. It got close but never all the way."
"I thought for sure..."
"I know... I wish I had though."
"Why?"
"Because I wouldn't feel like such an idiot."
"Why are you an idiot?"
"Well because I bet he's got all kinds of experience with girls and I just had Al."
"Now that hurts," Al Snow says, nudging his way between Chy and Kat.
"Hey baby," Kat says, smiling as she pecks his cheek, "how you doing?"
"I'm hanging in there. You?"
"I'm all right."
"I hear good things about you and Raven."
"What did you hear?" Kat asks.
"Just that you two are hanging out a lot."
"Oh..."
"Serious?"
"Why do you care?" Chyna asks as she puts down her books on top of her desk.
"I'm just a nice guy," Al says before going to sit with his friends.
"I still don't get why the two of you broke up," Chyna whispers.
"It just wasn't meant to be."
"He's a nice guy... cute too."
"I know... he's just too much like a brother."
Kat sits down and looks across the class to Al. Chyna follows her friend's gaze and sighs. She finds herself feeling incredibly jealous of her friend's good luck. Before both her and Kat did the single thing with a great deal of flair, frequently making fun of Debra and Steve. But now Kat's just like Debra and Steve.
"Earth to Chyna... Earth to Chyna... where did you go?"
"To a lonely place."
"Are you okay?"
"No."
"Chy..."
Miss Young clears her throat and the two girls turn to the front of the class, both of their mouths splitting into mile-wide grins when they see their teacher's very loose fitting turtleneck and boxy jacket. They discreetly high five each other.
Part 9:
Kat’s lying on top of Raven’s chest in the backseat of his car, her lips pressing against the pulse of his throat.
“What’s wrong?” he asks her.
“Nothing…”
“I know we don’t know each other extremely well but come on…”
“It’s Chyna.”
“Is she okay?”
“She might have a case of Fifth Wheel Syndrome.”
“What?”
“Debra has a boyfriend, I have you… I think she might feel a little left out.”
“That sucks Kat but what can we do about it?”
“I don’t know. But you asked me what was wrong and I told you…”
“Do you want me to get Chris to ask her out?”
“Kanyon?”
“Yeah?”
“No. I’m not saying she needs a boyfriend… and anyways, it’s not like I can get her the guy she wants… not that the bastard deserves her…”
“Who’s the guy?” Raven asks, running his fingers through Kat’s hair.
“Hunter.”
“Steph’s boyfriend?”
“He wouldn’t have been if Steph wasn’t an underhanded freak… Chy and Hunter have known each other for ages… they lived real close until Hunter’s dad went to work for Stephanie’s dad. Hunter and her kept hanging out but things between them were strained, especially since Steph was spending more and more time with Hunter and making her interest in him very blatant. Then Steph hears Chy invite Hunter out for what would have been their first date. Suddenly, her father’s having this family-type retreat with the people from his company on the same weekend and Hunter just has to go with her. So Hunter goes and when they come back, they’re attached at the hip.”
“To me, that just says he wasn’t worth it.”
“Maybe you’re right… but regardless, Chy has a huge thing for him and it’s not just going away.”
“And him?”
“I just don’t know… there are moments when I see him looking at Chyna and I guess…”
“You’re cute, you know that?” Raven asks Kat, kissing her forehead.
“Huh?”
“You care about your friends a lot.”
“And that makes me cute?”
“Yeah,” Raven says, leaning down to kiss Kat.
As his lips skim over her mouth, Kat sighs and her fingers tighten around Raven’s thick arms. Her boyfriend’s mouth has seriously distracting effects on her brain. Suddenly, she feels his hand on her breast and any logical thought flies right out the window.
“It was three o’clock in the morning,” Mrs. Jones tells her daughter as she finishes her breakfast. “Just two hours ago. It’s your health you’re putting on the line young lady.”
“I know Mom. But it was just one time.”
“One time is all it takes Kathryn. If you’re less than as alert as you should be on the ice, you slip and fall, you break something and your career flies right out the window.”
“I’m sorry Mom.”
“Don’t apologize to me Kathryn… it’s your health, your career, not mine.”
Kat stifles a yawn and rubs her face with both of her hands. “I just… lost track of time, you know?”
“Yes, I know. I had boyfriends when I was your age too.”
“I still think you’re a bit young to get so serious about this guy,” Kat’s father mutters from behind his newspaper.
“We’re not that serious Dad.”
“Coming home at three o’clock means it is serious.”
“How many times do I have to apologize for last night?”
“What did you do last night?’ Kat’s brother Rocky asks as he joins the family in the kitchen.
“Nothing.”
“Yeah right. What did she do?”
“She came home at three in the morning.”
“Where were you?”
“Out with her boyfriend,” her father chuckles.
“DAD!”
“Boyfriend? What boyfriend? How come this is the first I’ve heard about her boyfriend? Who is this guy? Do Mom and Dad know him? What’s his name? When do I meet this guy? And what exactly were you doing with him until three o’clock in the morning? Oh my God, you’re still a virgin aren’t you?”
Kat rolls her eyes skyward while her parents struggle not to laugh. Rocky’s always taken his big brother role extra seriously, more so now that he’s going to school in Florida and is unable to keep an eye on his little sister.
“None of that is any of your business bro.”
“I beg to differ. I want to meet this guy.”
“No.”
“Kathryn, if you think I won’t delay going back to college to meet this guy, you are so wrong.”
“MOM!”
“Remember how often you told me to stay out of your arguments with your brother?” Mrs. Jones asks, “This is one of those times.”
“Dad?”
“Yeah… get in the middle of a fight between you and your brother? So not going to happen.”
“Good morning Joneses!” Shane shouted as he came in through the kitchen door.
“Shane,” Rocky quickly asks, “are you going out with my sister?”
“Hell no! Not that Kat’s not a great chick or anything, but I wouldn’t want to have you playing the part of the overly protective big brother.”
“Then you know her boyfriend?”
“You don’t want to answer that Shane. Rocky, I swear to God, you are never going to know how my boyfriend is.”
“I will find out. Count on it.”
“Let’s go Shane. And Mom, after practice I’m going to the mall with Debra and Chyna.”
“No you’re not,” Rocky shouted, “you’re coming back home so we can discuss this new boyfriend of yours.”
“Let’s go Shane!”
“Kathryn!”
“As sweet as ever, isn’t he?” Shane asks a frowning Kat.
“He’s overdoing the protective bit and it annoys the hell out of me… as usual.”
“Come, let’s skate… it’ll make you feel better.”
“Please. You just want to get there early so you can make out with Cheryl while I warm up.”
“Can ya blame me?” Shane asks with grin as he gets into his car.
“Pig…”
Part 10:
Chyna is sitting at a small table in the mall’s food court while Kat and Debra are getting their pizzas and drinks. Right in front of her, a few tables away, she can see Hunter with Stephanie, Stacey and Stacey’s boyfriend Test. She’s about to make a quick disappearing act when Sarah, their school’s social events coordinator plops down on a chair in front of her.
“I still don’t have your answer about the prom.”
“Hello to you too Sarah. How you doing?”
“I’m fine. So… you gonna come or not?”
“I don’t know.”
“What about you two?” Sarah asks Debra and Kat as they come back with the food, “I don’t have your answers about the prom.”
“Steve will be giving you a check on Monday,” Debra says quickly.
“Good. Kathryn?”
“I don’t know… I didn’t think about it.”
“Well, you have a boyfriend now,” Sarah says quickly, “which means you have an escort. Ergo, you have no excuse for not coming.”
“True. But I made plans with Chyna so I’ll stick to them.”
“Oh come on… you’re not going to stay at home for your prom Kat, I refuse to believe that.”
“Sarah, I don’t really care what you believe,” Kat snaps, “I am not going and that’s that!”
Flustered, the brunette, who’s often mistaken for Stephanie McMahon, stomps off angrily, leaving Chyna to stare at her friend.
“What was that?”
“What was what?”
“Sticking to your plans with me? What if Raven wants to go?”
“He will go.
We’re not going, that’s all.”
“I hate noble bitches like you.”
“Aw shucks… my cue to care?”
“Hey you didn’t tell us your hunky brother was in town,” Debra interrupts Kat and Chyna’s simili-fight while nodding to a vague spot over Kat’s shoulder.
“A) I don’t have a hunky brother; B) My
asshole of a brother being in town doesn’t qualify as a mentionable event.”
“Ladies,” Rocky says as he sits down in front of his sister, “looking as lovely as ever.”
Kat groans.
Knowing her brother is watching her every move Kat flits around the lingerie store, picking up the flimsiest bits and pieces of lace and tucks them under her arm. Watching the siblings as they eye each other in challenge, Chyna and Debra are on the edge of laughter.
“I’m ready to try these on,” Kat finally announces.
Rocky, smiling confidently, steps in front of his sister and shakes his head, “No.”
“Brother dear,” Kat says with a smile that’s a match for her brother’s, “there’s no way in
blue hell that you get
any say in my choice of underwear.”
“You aren’t buying this… stuff.”
“Not all of it, no, but some of it.”
“Kathryn!”
“Isn’t that your friend Hunter?” Kat says, pointing to a point outside the store.
While Rocky looks the other way Kat ducks into the dressing room. Realizing he’s been had, the overprotective brother walks out of the store, leaving his sister’s best friends to laugh at his retreating back.
“Is he gone?” Kat asks, peaking from the dressing room.
“Aren’t you going to try this stuff on?” Chyna asks, pointing to everything Kat had gathered from the store and is now dumping on a nearby rack.
“I know my thong size and I didn’t really need the bras. I was just messing with the idiot.”
“The two of y’all kill me,” Debra sighs as Kat pays for her purchases.
“What? It’s all in good fun.”
“You two make it sound, and look, like you hate each other.”
“We really don’t. It’s just that Rocky overdoes the overprotective brother bit.”
“So you tease him mercilessly?”
“Yes.”
“Absolutely insane… both of you.”
“I prefer differently motivated.”
Laughing, the three young girls walk out of the store and find Chris Jericho having a conversation with Rocky.
“Oooh Kat,” Chris says with a grin, “what lovely piece of lingerie did you get for me to fantasize over?”
“Him?” Rocky asks, eyes wide with dismay, “He’s the boyfriend? The ass-licker?”
“I wish! But your little sister’s got weird tastes man!”
“Weird? You know her boyfriend?”
“Chris,” Kat growls, “don’t you dare…”
“Normally, I wouldn’t but your brother scares me worse than you.”
“I’ll kill you…”
“I’d like to meet her boyfriend,” Rocky tells Chris, “just to make sure he’s worthy, you know?”
“Totally understandable, but take my word for it, he’s not. Me, now that’s a whole other ball game. I am…”
“He’s not?”
“No, I mean look at him!”
Chris points and Rocky, Kat, Chyna and Debra turn around and see Raven coming toward them with his friend Kanyon.
“Aw hell,” Kat mutters.
The second he sees Kat, Raven moves forward. And she does too until this big guy steps in front of her.
“You’re Raven? Kat’s
boyfriend?”
“Who are you to care?”
“Just answer the question.”
“Not to a stranger.”
“Get off him Rocky!” Kat says, shoving her brother out of the way. “Raven, this is the sainted idiot my folks were too nice to give away when he was born, my brother Rocky. Rocky, this is my
boyfriend Raven.”
“Rocky.”
“Raven.”
Chyna and Debra giggle as the competitive staredown the two young men engage in, openly challenging each other while Kat watches and seethes.
“All right Rocky, so you’ve met him, you can go home now,” Kat says, stepping in front of Raven.
“Oh come on sis, don’t be so harsh. Give me a chance to talk to this young man, get to know him a little better. I’m not going to hurt him.”
“I don’t want you to get to know him better Rocky. He’s my boyfriend.”
“Kat, it’s cool. I can handle your brother.”
“Handle me? You think you can
handle me?”
“If you’re sure,” Kat whispers to Raven.
“I’m sure.”
Raven kisses Kat’s cheek and walks away with Rocky, leaving Kanyon and Jericho with the three girls.
“Well, I think that guy’s not going to be a problem anymore,” Chris declares, “so Kat, since Raven’s going to be history in the next few minutes, what do you say we go to the prom together?”
“Do not speak to me again,” Kat growls, turning to Chris. “Come Monday, I’m going to see Mr. Patterson and I am so asking for a lab partner switch.”
“But…”
“Loser,” Kanyon chuckles, walking away.
