Summary: Nothing more than a little phone conversation. Something of a sequel to the phone call story Emily wrote for me.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"What's going on?"
"Besides my life falling apart, nothing much."
"You're going to be fine."
"Easy for you to say. You're married, you have a wife and you're fine. I cheated on my fiancé with you and I have to pay the price."
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry, huh?" Kat looked around the room she'd decorated herself, and that was now filled with boxes and suitcases and sighed. "Sorry doesn't give me back my life."
"What do you want me to do? Do you want me to talk to him?"
"No! He doesn't know it was you."
"You didn't tell him?"
"No. Finding out I was cheating was bad enough. Knowing it was with you, a married man, would have been worse."
"Am I allowed to thank you?"
"You should. Instead of ruining four lives because of our mistake, I only ruined two. Mine and Andrew's."
Kat got up, the cordless phone at her ear and went to a picture frame Andrew had thrown against the wall. Scattered over it were pieces of a picture of her and Andrew.
"You sure he doesn't know?" he asked after a moment.
"Yes."
"Kat, why didn't you tell him who I was?"
"Because I'm a good person? I don't know. It's bad enough that I cheated. He's got to work with you. It could fuck up his career if he went after you for this."
"I wouldn't do that Kat. I mean, he's not a bad guy. Just a guy who had..."
"Something you wanted. Right?"
"You make me sound like a mercenary."
"You were. That's what you acted like. Like a mercenary."
"I didn't force you into anything," he retorted.
"No, you didn't. I did it. I slept with you. Now I'm taking responsibility for my actions here. I betrayed a man who cared about me. Being forced to leave him is the price I have to pay."
"And you're suffering."
"Part of the game. I made love to you and paid the price."
"So," he asked, mulling over her words, "what are you going to do now?"
"Well, I have until tonight to move out of his house."
"Where are you going to stay?"
"A hotel for tonight. I'm going to start looking for apartments or condos tomorrow."
"You need any money?"
"Wouldn't that top it all? Getting money from my married lover? Oh yeah, that'd be great."
"Kat..."
"No. I'm geting out of this world, of this life. It's bad enough that Andrew will have to work with you, think of you as a friend, not knowing the truth. Having me hang around is going to be worse."
"What about me?"
"What about you?"
He closed his eyes and ran his hand over his face.
"Yeah, what about you and me? I mean..."
"We have a dirty little affair?"
"Well..."
"No. Until you're single, I'm not going anywhere near you."
"Come on... please."
"Why? Tell me why I should give you the time of day. Who's to say you won't cheat on me too?"
"So what should I do? Leave my wife?"
"No. You should get ready."
"Ready for what?"
"For me to hang up on you."
"Kat..."
Kat pressed the off button on the phone and replaced it in its cradle. She let out a sigh and started packing again. She could hope that he would leave his wife and come to her, but then again, what man would leave the lovely Debra for a nobody writer like herself? No one. Specially not Stone Cold Steve Austin.
All in all, she thought as she closed a suitcase, it had been a fascinating little conversation.
