How do you go up to the girl you've had a crush on for months and ask her out? Specially when you're a girl yourself? I don't know... I want to... I want to so bad it hurts... but... what if she says no? What if I disgust her? What if she hates me for it? Ugh! Kill me, kill me now.
"Why so glum?" Jason asks me.
"Have you ever been scared shitless of doing something you want to do more than anything else in the world?"
"Such as?"
"Go up to someone you like and ask them out on a date?"
"Oh. Who?"
"Amy Dumas."
Jason grins at me and he doesn't seem put off by the fact that I want to ask out another girl. I hug him briefly. He blushes. He's the best.
"Amy's cool. You should ask her out. You'd make an interesting couple."
"Yay, I'll be interesting."
"Come on Kat."
"I'm scared. What if she hates me for it?"
"For being bi? Come on..."
"What makes you think I'm not gay?"
"Cause I know about you and Adam last summer."
My turn to blush.
"I thought so," Jason says, all cocky and shit. "Now, go up to that girl and ask her out."
"Why are you so interested?" I ask him.
"Because I hope you two will get together and let me watch."
"Pig."
Amy and Jeff pass by and Jason shoves me right into her.
"Come on Jeff, I gotta talk to you."
I stand in front of Amy and she smiles at me. Poor girl has no clue. But I gather up my courage and say the words.
"What are you doing tonight?"
"Nothing much, probably hanging with the idiots? Why?"
"I thought you might like to have dinner with me... just us too."
"Girls' night out? Could be cool."
"No," I shake my head, "I was thinking like a date."
I shocked her. I can tell from her wide eyes. Then she smiles at me. A real smile, the kind Dean Malenko dreams about.
"I'd like that."
"You would?"
"Yeah."
"Uh, all right. I'll pick you at eight at your hotel room, okay?"
"Sure. Uh Kat, should I dress up?"
"Yeah, that'd be fun."
"See ya then."
She pecks my cheek and off she goes, down the hall. Jason's at my side immediately.
"So?"
"I got a date."
"Now, we have to pick out what to wear."
Ok, so for a straight guy, Jason's a fashion whiz. Cause here I stand in front of Amy's room in a long sleeveless black dress, my hair up at his suggestion and nothing else. I shouldn't distract her from my face he said. She looks great too, in a kick ass short gray dress with 3/4 sleeves.
"Hey," she says, "you look great."
"Thanks. You too."
"Thanks."
"You ready to go?"
"Yep."
Twenty minutes later, we're sitting in the back of the Olive Garden. I'm sweating, I'm so nervous.
"Calm down," she tells me with a smile, "I'm enjoying this."
"Why?" The words stumble out of my mouth.
"Truth?"
"Please." I'd die at anything else.
"I'm curious. I mean, I like you Kat. You're a great girl. And you're pretty cute too. And I don't know, when you asked me out, saying no didn't come to mind."
"Thanks for saying yes. It means a lot."
"Why didn't you ask me sooner though?"
"I was scared. You might say no, you might be disgusted and your boyfriend might object."
"Boyfriend? Oh Matt... well, that's complicated."
"Tell me about it."
"I like him a lot but sexually? There's like no heat between us."
"Good." God, I can't believe I said that.
Amy laughs and puts her hand on mine. I stare at her for a moment. God, she's so beautiful. I reach out and push some hair back behind her ear. She lets me do it. My hand lingers there... it feels so good.
Her hand reaches out and she takes my wrist and brings it to her lips. I feel her tongue on my skin and I close my eyes. My world's tilted on its axis.
"I'm not all that hungry," she tells me, her eyes hooded.
"Check please."
The next morning, it's about seven when there's a knock on my door. I curse a few times and get up to open the door. Jason's there, bearing a tray of croissants and coffee.
"I brought three cups, just in case."
"Calm down horny boy. It didn't go that far."
"How far did it go?"
"Second base," I say with a smile.
"Good job Kat. So?"
"I think I got a girlfriend."
