Vignette 11: An icon's insecurities
Maybe the game was too dangerous
maybe he was flying too close to the sun and like Icarus, he would crash and burn. Or, on the upside he might be like the Wright brothers and succeed where others had failed. Oh damn him and his ambition anyhow
Vignette 12: A break-up
"I'm sorry but it's just not working out for me anymore," Hunter told Stephanie as he finished packing his clothes and belongings.
"But you love me. You told me that it was my love for the business that
"
"Things change. I fell out of love."
"Fell out of love? You don't just fall out of love with me Hunter! I'm Stephanie McMahon damn it!"
"I'm sorry Stephanie. I never meant to hurt you."
"But you are hurting me and it's not fair and
"
While Stephanie spoke, Hunter kept on moving around their bedroom, moving his bags out of the bedroom they'd shared for months. Dazed, she looked around the room and saw he'd taken all of his personal things, his half of the closet was empty and he was now pulling his heaviest suitcase behind him. Her heart seemed to cave inside of her chest and tears sprung to her eyes.
"Was it something I did?" she asked, her eyes awash with tears. "Did I do something that upset you so much you have to leave me now?"
"No," he sighed, turning around to face her.
Stephanie looked up at him and saw in his eyes as much pain as she felt.
"Why are you doing this? You're not just hurting me, you're hurting yourself too!"
"I'm doing this because I'm making some choices in my life that will end up hurting you a lot more than you're hurting right now."
"What does that mean Hunter?"
"It means that I have to go and that I am sorry."
With that, Hunter grabbed the bags from the hallway and started making his way down the stairs. Numb with pain, Stephanie watched him go, doing what she could to will her heart not to break.
Vignette 13: The moneyman thinks
He wasn't meant for this climate. It was way too cold. His skin was going to dry out. He checked his watch. Three o'clock in the afternoon and it was pitch-black outside. And he was supposed to stay here for six months? Oh yeah, his sanity was definitely borderline.
Vignette 14: Negotiating a break
"Is it because of the break-up?" Vince asked the man he'd hoped would become his son-in-law.
"No
I just need to try something else with my life."
"And you can't try it while you're part of the WWFE family?"
"I was hoping you'd understand Vince. I have three months left until the end of my contract. Renewing with you is not a problem. I just need to clear my head."
"And you can't do that while you're part of the WWFE?"
"No."
"I mean this isn't some kind of negotiation tactic Hunter. I'd be really disappointed."
"No it's not Vince. I wouldn't do that to you."
Vignette 15: The betrayer's complicity
They crossed each other in the hallways, knowing what no one else knew, knowing that they were going to jump ship, knowing they were going to take an unexpected chance, knowing they could rise and succeed or crash and burn. They knew each other from impromptu meetings and training sessions, having found themselves both pleased and surprised to find out they weren't the only ones jumping ship, taking a chance. And whether the risk panned out or not, they wouldn't have to spend a lifetime wondering about the road less taken.
