Part 11:
When Shane looked down and saw his sister follow him, he swore over and over again. She was nuts! Then again, so was he. He finally made it up top and looked down. She was about five feet below him and running away was not an option. He had to be careful. One false move and he could pitch over and
he couldn't afford to think about that right now. He had to be positive. He wouldn't fall
right?
Sam finally joined Shane had the top of the Titantron and she called out to him.
"Shane, enough!"
"No! Never!
"Shane, we could both fall and hurt ourselves."
"Hey, I've willingly jumped off Titantrons before. You think falling off one means anything to me?"
"Fine. Play it that way."
Sending a prayer to the wrestling gods, Sam started running down the skeletal support and tackled Shane. They fought atop the large screen and Shane soon got the upper hand and tossed his sister over. While Sam hung from the Titantron, Shane scurried down it and ran toward the ring. It took everything Samantha had not to give up and uncurl her hands. But she held on.
"MOMMA!"
Samantha looked down and saw her daughter standing in front of the Titantron. Seeing her there gave her the strength she needed to get down from the Titantron. But unfortunately, by the time her feet touched the ground, Cassie wasn't waiting for her mother. With the speed and determination only a six-year old could have, the little girl was on her way to avenge her mother. Gabe soon joined his wife down her ramp, both of them ducking out of the way of Austin and RVD but they were unable to make it past Booker and Kurt quite so fast. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Cassie on her knees, biting into Shane's calf.
Seeing that only made Sam fight harder but Booker was a difficult opponent. Next to her, Gabe wasn't having an easy time prying Angle off him either. Surprisingly, Sam heard commotion behind her and she turned around to see Vince and Al Snow nailing Austin and RVD with chairs while Linda rushed forward to get Cassie. And she got her granddaughter off her son, only to find out her other daughter had followed her down.
"Where are you going old woman?"
"Come on Stephanie, I just want to get your niece to safety."
"Well, the kid shouldn't have come out here. She took the risk and if she gets hurt, that's just too damn bad!"
"I hate you!" Cassie screamed. "You don't look like my Momma and you're ugly."
"Why, you little
aaaaaaaaaaaah!"
Kane had made it back to the ring and he pulled on Steph's hair, tossing her to the side, allowing Linda to get Cassie and herself to safety. Gabe, Vince and Al soon followed and the members of Teams Alliance and WWF found themselves in the ring, head to head. Referee Earl Hebner rang the bell, canceling the previous battle and using the microphone to explain the match was beginning down and in earnest.
The battle that began at that time was felt by every person watching. The hits were hard and unforgiving and the sound of ten fists hitting flesh was extremely awe-inspiring. But things soon degenerated as Rocky and Angle got eliminated when they threw themselves over the top rope, fighting on the way down and when they hit the ground. Six of the remaining team members made their way to their respective corner while RVD tangled with Kane, an unlucky break for the Big Red Machine as RVD's soon had him dropping down to the ground heavily. Then it was Jericho's turn to tangle with Mr. Monday Night and his success was short-lived as he fell victim to Van Dam's impressive kicks.
Taker stopped Sam from jumping RVD from behind and down in instead, proceeding to wipe the floor with the man. He then pulled Booker into the ring and things got underway between the two men. The hits were hard but Booker was far more exhausted than Taker and couldn't fight him off when Taker lifted him for the Last Ride. But Taker's age showed as he backed into the ropes. He tried to maintain the move but he had to give it up and both him and Booker went over.
Shane and Sam looked at each other and they knew that it all depended on them. They were going to determine the future of sports entertainment.
Part 12:
Shane and Sam shot out of their corners like bullets out of guns and with the same deadly impact. Keeping to the confines of the ring, they fought it out, wrestling mixing with martial arts with the basic principles of street fighting, neither one of them willing to give up, even when Shane started bleeding from the mouth, just like Sam. After a particularly devastating cross-body hit, both of them lay in the ring, breathing hard, staring up at the harsh light from the overhead light fixture while Hebner counted.
"I'm going to get up and let you lose Shane," Sam shouted as she struggled to roll to the side, "and your precious
Alliance will be no more."
"THREE
"
"Please, I am going to kick your ass
after I win
"
"FOUR
"
"You wish. After tomorrow, your ass and your darling sister's ass will be mine to do with as I please and baby, you don't want to know what will please me."
"FIVE
"
"Bitch!"
"SIX!"
"I invented the word, you little prick!"
Finally able to regain their strength, Sam and Shane shot to their feet and their fight began once more. Their moves came more slowly but carried a much more devastating impact, especially when Shane left Sam, now bleeding from a cut above her eye, on the mat while he went up top. He was set to fly and did, landing a few inches away from Sam, who'd rolled away just in time. She scrambled to her feet and ran to the ring corner, going up much like Shane had and landing a perfect elbow on his chest. That was all that was needed: a cover and the match was over. Team WWF had won. But as Samantha started blacking out, she would have been hard pressed to know if any of it had been worth it.
Part 13:
Sam didn't know if she really could believe the rest of Team WWF when they told her she'd made it backstage on her own two feet but here she was, sitting on a cot next to her brother while doctors checked on them to find out exactly what kind of shape they were in.
Finally, they were both cleared and the trainers left, leaving only the concerned McMahons in the room, Vince, Linda, Samantha, Shane and Stephanie. There was definite animosity in the air.
"I want to know how come I didn't find out about Samantha until SMACKDOWN," Shane said, looking at both of his parents and at his older sister. "I'm guessing there was a good reason?"
"There was. Sam was born out of wedlock and at that time, none of our parents were willing to accept her."
"She's a bastard?" Steph laughed.
"Yeah, I'm a bastard."
"You are not a bastard," Linda said in clipped tones. "You were merely born out of wedlock."
"Which makes me a bastard," Sam giggled. "Come on Mom, I'm cool with it."
"I am not okay with my daughter being called a bastard!"
"But I'm calling myself a bastard!"
"Samantha!"
"Fine!"
"How long have you known who your real parents were?" Shane asked, smiling at the argument.
"We told her when Stephanie was born," Linda said softly, "Samantha was about to turn eleven."
"I'd known since I was eight."
"How?" Vince demanded, sounding almost angry.
"Your chin and Mom's eyes."
"Why didn't you guys bring Sam around sooner?" Shane asked, staring at his older sister.
"We wanted to but
Samantha had been raised so differently from you and
"
"She wasn't spoiled," Steph provided coldly. "Right? Little Sam was being raised in a totally different environment and you couldn't wait to see if the McMahon genes would prevail, right Daddy? Not like us
"
"You couldn't be more wrong," Sam said. "I was the spoiled one. To my surrogate parents, I was the next coming of the Messiah. I could do no wrong. How dumb would I have to be to give that up to share two busy parents with the two of you? Mom and Dad didn't hide me away. I decided to get away from you!"
Vince smiled at Sam and covered her shoulder with his hand.
"That's not exactly how it happened. We gave Samantha a year to make her choice but then her surrogate father died in a car accident and your sister didn't want to uproot her surrogate mother at such a difficult time, much less leave her. And so she stayed, going to school, then to college."
"What an exemplary child," Shane snickered.
Vince and Linda chortled at that.
"Hardly that. Your sister's not a McMahon just in name. She has the temper and the stubbornness to match. She got that tattoo when she was sixteen, after forging my signature; she worked as a
swimsuit model and as a bouncer."
"You forget my stint as a waitress Mom."
"I didn't forget it. I choose to ignore that episode."
"Why?" Steph asked. "Why do all of this? Why not take advantage of the money, of the name?"
"Because if I took the name, they would have wanted me to be a good little McMahon. I didn't want to be good. I wanted to be free."
"Free of what? The millions you were going to inherit?"
"The way I saw it, taking the millions would mean having to be who they wanted me to be. Making my millions means getting to be whoever I want to be."
"Making your millions?"
"You sister owns several very profitable fitness equipment stores and magazines."
"And how come we never heard Samantha McMahon before?"
"I used to me Sam E., which is short for Samantha Edwards, Mom's maiden name."
"You guys really thought this through, didn't you?" Stephanie asked, trying a tentative smile to her sister.
"It wasn't meant to hurt you," Samantha told her brother and sister. "But I had a feeling of how trapped I might feel as a McMahon and I didn't want that."
"Bet you guys are very proud of Samantha," Shane said somberly.
"We are," Linda smiled, rubbing her son's shoulder. "But then again, we're proud of all of our children equally, though for different reasons."
"You're proud of us losing ECW and WCW?"
"I'm proud of the way you two stood tall and proud against me."
"But you had to bring in your big gun."
"If you were me," Vince asked his youngest children, "tell me you wouldn't have done the same thing."
Shane and Stephanie turned to their sister and nodded their accord. They would have done the exact same thing.
Part 14:
Thanksgiving Day
Hunter looked down at the little girl standing in front of him and was at a complete loss as to what to say.
"What's wrong?" Gabe asked as he came over.
"She's got some mouth on her, doesn't she?" Hunter asked, peering down at Cassie.
"What did she say?"
"She wanted to know if I could still see her when she stood under my nose."
Gabe started laughing so hard tears fell out of his eyes. He finally looked over at Cassie and from the inquisitive look in her eyes, she fully expected Hunter to answer.
"That's my baby girl for you."
"Huh
Uncle Hunter? Can you see me?"
"Uncle Hunter?" he gasped. "I'm Uncle Hunter now?"
"Come along Cassie," Gabe chuckled as he carried his curious daughter away, "I think you scared Uncle Hunter."
"I'm really Uncle Hunter?" the still dumb-founded Game asked no one in particular, "does that mean I'm going to have to play with dolls or something now?"
Laughing, Gabe carried Cassie to the kitchen where the McMahon women were working on the day's Thanksgiving meal.
"Think you could keep an eye on our offspring for the time being?" he asked his wife.
"What's wrong?" Sam asked him.
"She asked Uncle Hunter if she could hide under his nose."
"Uncle Hunter?" Linda repeated as she turned to Stephanie. "Uncle Hunter?"
"We're not married Mom! Cassie!"
"Yes Auntie Stephanie?" Steph looked down as the cherubic angel blinking up at her and her heart melted.
"Want to lick the cookie dough from the bowl?"
"Yes, thank you."
"Con artist," Samantha muttered as her daughter worked her magic on Steph. "It's all good Gabe. Go watch the game and remember to tell me the score."
"Will do."
"How long have you guys been married?" Stephanie asked Sam as Gabe left.
"Three years."
"So Cassie's
uh
"
"I'm a bastard," Cassie chimed in proudly.
"Cassie!" Samantha and Linda said at the same time.
"It's true! Just like Momma!"
"This is exactly why I don't want you referring to yourself as a
"
"Bastard?"
"Cassie!"
"But it's the right word."
Samantha sent her daughter a telling look and got back to work.
"How did you meet?"
"He was on vacation at a resort where I was doing a shoot. He purposely dumped a pitcher of sangria after I, somewhat bitchily, refused his advances. It was hatred from that moment on. I bumped into him again in Chicago and, don't ask me how, we ended up in bed. It's been a wild ride ever since that time."
"Is it me or is he younger?"
"By five whole years."
"Wow!"
"What can I say? I like them younger and frisky. Better stamina!"
"Samantha Elizabeth McMahon!" Linda said, her tone warning.
Sam batted her lashes innocently and pecked her mother's cheek. Stephanie just laughed. And Cassie asked for more cookie dough.
Vince didn't want to watch any of the NFL games but Gabe wasn't having any of it. As for Shane and Hunter, they were glad to have Gabe arguing with Vince, keeping him from shutting off the TV, while they checked out the games.
"Shhhhhhhh," Hunter finally said, "you're making us miss the game."
"Give it up Pops," Gabe said, "it's the three of us against just you. We're watching the NFL, all of us."
"Fine, but I am not happy about this."
"Oooooh, check out that touchdown!" Shane hissed. "That was beautiful!"
Uncle Hunter, still in shock over his new title, sat next to motor-mouth Cassandra during the Thanksgiving meal and looked like his eyes were going to cave in from trying to keep up with her. Her little hands moved around quickly as she explained her story.
Shane listened to Samantha and Stephanie as they bonded and sighed. He had an older sister. It gave him a weird feeling at the pit of his stomach. He wasn't the heir apparently anymore. And the future of the WWF no longer solely rested on his shoulders. Hell, he didn't even have to worry about the fourth generation of wrestling McMahons, Sam had taken care of that.
Shane would be hard-pressed to admit it but he did like his older sister. There was a lot to be said for her bold style and her ask me if I care attitude.
"You know," he said, "as an older sister, you owe us."
"I owe you?"
"Yes. Me and Steph. You were supposed to break the rules for us. And you didn't... not that we could see."
"So I owe you that way?"
"You owe us," Stephanie agreed.
Samantha smiled and looked at her brother and sister as their eyes shone merrily.
"Fine, what do the two of you want?"
"Where the hell were you three?" Vince asked Sam, Shane and Steph as they came in a few minutes before SMACKDOWN.
"We were out," Sam laughed.
"Out? Out where?"
"Get her away from me," Hunter begged Sam as he glanced down at Cassie who sat in his lap, playing with her half-bald Barbie and one of Sam's old Transformer action figure.
"SMACKDOWN's about to start," Vince scolded his children.
"Sorry Dad," Shane said as he took off his leather jacket.
Vince turned around and looked at his children, all of them with the same look on their faces. And that smile was all too familiar. He'd seen it one too many times on Samantha's face after she'd done something reprehensible.
"What did you do?" he asked them as the SMACKDOWN theme began.
"Nothing," they all said together.
"Oh here you are," Linda said, coming into the living room. "SMACKDOWN's just beginning. Have a seat kids. God, that sounds so n-"
"No, not nice. The three of them have done something, something you and I are not going to be happy about."
"Kids?"
"It's nothing Mom," Sam said.
"Is that so?" Vince asked as he tried placing a hand on his oldest daughter's shoulder. She immediately shied away from his touch. "Oh no
you didn't."
"Samantha!" Gabe growled, "don't tell me
"
"It's not a big one
it's tiny compared to the dragon."
"The dragon? The tattoo? You guys got a tattoo?" Uncle Hunter asked.
"It's a small one," Stephanie said as she smiled. "And we all got the same one."
"Show me."
With a conspiratorial smile, the McMahon kids took off their jackets and rolled up their right sleeves. There, in clean block letters were their initials: SMM.
"You're getting them removed."
"No way!" Shane said.
"I'll make the appointments with the laser removal clinic myself. All three of you."
"Hey look Cassie," Sam said, moving past Vince while he went on fuming, "Mommy's on TV."
"Don't you dare ignore me Samantha Elizabeth!"
"Mommy, grandpa looks mad."
"He'll get over it. He still thinks he gets to boss me around. You'd think he'd know better."
"He should," Gabe laughed while Shane and Stephanie followed in their sister's footsteps and circling around their father and sitting down in front of the big screen TV.
"I blame you for this Samantha. Getting tattoos... I can't believe it."
"What did you think Daddy?" Samantha asked with a smile, "that I would stop being me? That I wouldn't rebel anymore? That I wouldn't drive you nuts anymore? That I'd turn into some kind of Daddy's Girl after meeting Shane and Steph?"
Vince growled in frustration and joined his wife on the love seat while Sam settled her daughter into her lap. He'd hoped Samantha would change to fit him and his needs, but he should have known better. Samantha would always be his firstborn, he'd always be proud of her, but she'd never be Daddy's girl.
