This is a small sample of spells that are out there. If anyone would like to take the time to add the entire list please contact Dark Cloud.


Incantations

Accio (summoning charm) - Latin for "to summon."

Aguamenti (Conjures clear water into the target container) - from Latin "aqua", which means water, mentis is Latin for mind

Alohomora (charm that causes a locked door to open) - "aloha" is Hawaiian for "farewell", and "mora" is Latin for "obstacle".

Anapneo - (clear target's blocked airway) - Greek for "breathe"

Aparecium (Makes invisible ink becomes visible) - "appareo" is Latin for "to appear"

Avis (spell that Ollivander used to make birds fly out of Krum's wand) - Latin for "bird."

Colloportus (Seals a door, making an odd squelching noise) - "colligo" is Latin for "bind together", "portus" is Latin for "door"

Deletrius (banishing spell) - Latin for "to erase."

Densaugeo (spell that Malfoy used to make Hermione's front teeth grow huge) - "Dens" is Latin for "teeth." "Augeo" is Latin for "to enlarge."

Diffindo (spell Harry used to cause Cedric's bag to split apart) - In Latin, "Diffundo" means "scatter."

Dissendium (Opens the secret door in the statue of the hump-backed witch) - 'dissocio' is Latin for 'sever/divide', 'dium' is sun or today or now. Could mean 'Separate now!'

Engorgio (Engorgement Charm) - 'engorger' is French for 'swallow greedily'. A spell which causes the target to swell in size

Ennervate (used to revive someone who has been stunned) - Strangely, in Latin it means "weaken or destroy" which is the opposite of the spell's effect.

Episkey (Heals/repairs damage that has been inflicted on the target) - 'episkeyazo' is Greek for 'to repair'

Evanesco (Vanishing Spell) - 'evanesco' is Latin for 'to disappear'. Makes something go away by vanishing

Expecto Patronum (Patronus charm) - "Expecto" is Latin for "to look for" and "Patronus" is Latin for "protector." It creates a silver Patronus, usually a phantom shape of an animal, which embodies the positive thoughts of the caster and is used to repel dementors

Expelliarmus (disarming spell) - Latin combination "to expel" and "arma" (weapon).

Ferula (Spell that conjures a wooden rod) - 'ferrule' is English for 'wooden handle for strength or protection', from Latin 'furula', the fennel plant

Fidelius Charm (immensely complex spell involving the magical concealment of a secret inside a single, living soul, and is henceforth impossible to find, unless the Secret-Keeper chooses to divulge it) - 'fidelis' is Latin for 'trusty', 'faithful'

Finite (Stops a currently operating spell effect) - 'finio' is Latin for 'settle, end, die, cease'

Finite Incantatem (Stop currently operating spell effects) - 'finio' is Latin for 'settle, end, die', 'incantatem' is Latin for 'art of enchanting'

Flagrate (Creates a burning, fiery line in the air which can be "drawn" with the wand into specific shapes. The shape lingers for some time) - 'flagro' is Latin for 'blaze', 'burn'

Furnunculus (Curse that causes boils to break out all over the victim) - 'furuncle' is Latin for 'boil'

Impedimenta (used to slow down attackers) - "Impedio" is Latin for "to hinder."

Impervius (Makes something waterproof or water repellent) - 'im' is a prefix for 'not', 'pervius' is Latin for 'letting things through'

Inanimatus Conjurus (conjuring inanimate objects) - 'inanimus' is Latin for 'non-living', 'conjurus' is Latin for 'conjure'

Incarcerous (Sends thick ropes out of thin air to wrap around someone or something) - 'carcer' is Latin for 'prison'

Incendio (Starts a fire) - 'incendo' is Latin for 'to set fire to'

Lumos (used to make light emit from a wand) - "Lumen" is Latin for "light" and "luminous" means "emitting light" in English.

Nox (cancels out Lumos) - "Nox" is Latin for "darkness."

Orchideous (makes flowers spring out of the tip of a wand) - "Orchideae" is the Latin name for the orchid plant family

Priori Incantatem (Prior Incantation Emitter) - this is latin. "priori" meaning "before" or "prior" and incantatem for spells or incantations. so it could mean something along the lines of "spells having been cast before" or "prior spells" etc.

Quietus (cancels out "Sonorus") - Obviously "quiet" means to be silent, but "quietus" in Latin means "death." Strange...

Reducio (shrinking charm) - "Reduce" means "to make smaller" in English.

Riddikulus (spell used to transform a scary Boggart in to a humorous shape) - "Ridiculous" means "absurd."

Sonorous (spell used to magnify a voice like a loudspeaker) - "Sono" is Latin for "to make a sound."

Stupefy (spell used to make someone unconscious) - "Stupefy" in English means "dull the senses of; daze."


Other spells

Age line - A thin golden line drawn on a floor, which affects anyone who crosses it if they are too young

Animagus Transfiguration - Transfiguration by which an Animagus takes his or her animal form, or reverts to human form from animal form

Anti-cheating spells - Cast on quills before exams

Anti-Disapparition Jinx - Prevents someone from Apparating

Anti-gravity mist - Charm which creates a mist which hovers above the ground where a person stepping into this mist will find that up and down are reversed and they are hanging from the ground over the endless sky

Antler jinx - Causes the victim to sprout antlers

Apparition - Advanced spell used by fully trained wizards to disappear from one place and appear almost instantly somewhere else

Apparition, Side-Along - A form of Apparition in which the Apparator touches someone else and Apparates with that person

Armor-bewitching charm - This charm can be used as part of the Christmas decorations to Enchant suits of armor to sing Christmas carols

Babbling Curse - Causes the victim to babble

Banishing Charm (reverse of Summoning Charm) - Sends an object away from the caster

Bat-Bogey Hex - Engorges an opponent's 'bogies' to bat-size, gives them wings, and sets them to attacking his/her face

Bewitched Sleep - Puts the target person into a deep sleep

Bewitched Snowballs - Enchants snowballs to fly around and hit things

Blasting Curse - Useful spell for Wizarding Duels

Bluebell flames - Creates a quantity of blue flame which can be directed to a specific place

Bond of Blood - A powerful ancient magic which is formed when a person sacrifices themself for another person of their family out of love, creating a lingering protection in the blood of the person who was saved

Braking Charm - Charm used on a broomstick to allow it to stop effectively

Bubbles - Spell which pours non-bursting golden bubbles out of the wand

Bubble-Head Charm - Encloses the head of the caster with a bubble of breathable air

Canary transfiguration hex - Temporary hex to change someone into a giant canary. After a few moments, the transfigured person molts back into themselves

Candle magic - Ignites candles and can make them float in midair

Cheering Charm - Charm that cheers a person up, makes them happy

Color Change - A Charms spell which is required during the practical portion of the Charms OWL

Confundus Charm (Causes confusion. A person who is affected by this Charm is said to be Confunded) - "confundo" is Latin for "to perplex"

Contract, magical - This spell or spells makes a contract magically unbreakable

Crop-related charms - Various effects on crops depending on the specific charm in question

Cunjunctivitus Curse (spell that Krum used to "do something" to the eyes of the Chinese Fireball during the first task of the TWT) - Conjunctivitis is the scientific name for pink-eye -- the illness that children often get that makes eyelids crust together

Cross-Species Switches - Classification of Transfiguration magic in which one type of creature is transfigured into another

Cushioning Charm - creates an invisible "pillow" on the handle of a broom to make flying more comfortable

Defensive charge (automatic response)- A charge like that of electricity runs through the body of a wizard with this automatic defensive spell

Defensive Charm - spell to defend the caster

Disillusionment Charm - charm which hides the true, magical nature of something

Door-opening spell - Sends a jet of sparks out of the wand that opens the target door

Drought Charm - Dries up water

Enchanted Snow - A magical imitation snow which, unlike real snow, is warm and dry

Entrancing Enchantments - Spells that cause someone to fall in love with the caster

Extinguishing Spell - Spell that puts out fires

Feather-light - Spell that makes an object weigh practically nothing

Finger-removing jinx - Removes a person's fingers

Fire Talking - Using Floo Powder in a Wizard's fire, a person can communicate with another over distance

Fixing Charm - Spell that magically fastens one thing to another

Flame Freezing Charm - Changes the properties of fire so that its heat feels like a warm breeze

Flashing Paint Charm - This "tricky little charm" makes the paint on a banner flash different colors

Fountain of Wine - spell which produces a fountain of wine from the end of the wand

Fur spell - spell that causes a person to grow fur

Gripping Charms - Spell that allows an object to be held more easily

Grooming charms - Minor spells for personal grooming

Growth Charms - Spells to make things grow in size

Hair-growing hex - A hex that lengthens hair

Hair-Thickening Charm - spell which lengthens and thickens a person's hair

Hex-Deflection - A form of magic or class of spells that defend the caster against hexes

Homorphus Charm (A good charm to use against a werewolf) - 'homo' is Latin for 'man' and 'morph' is English for 'to change'

Horn tongue - Transfigures the target's tongue to a bony substance resembling horn

Horton-Keitch Braking Charm - Makes a racing broom easier to handle

Hot air charm - Fires off a jet of hot air from the end of a wand

Hover Charm - Makes an object float in the air

Imperturbable Charm (Creates a magical barrier on an object, such as a door, to prevent eavesdropping) - 'imperturbatus' is Latin for 'undisturbed', 'calm'

Insect jinx - Sprouts feelers on the victim's head, removes the victim's powers of speech, and forces the victim to scuttle along the ground

Instant scalping - this hex removes hair

Invisibility Charm - Spell to make a person or thing invisible

Jelly-Brain Jinx - Presumably affects the target's mental processes

Jelly-Legs Jinx - Causes the target's legs to wobble uncontrollably

Knee-reversing hex - Causes the target's knee to become backwards

Knitting charm - Enchants knitting needles to knit


Forbidden Spells

Avada Kedavra (killing curse) - Arameic phrase that means "may it be destroyed." Also, "ABRA KADABRA!" Sounds like it...

Crucio (Cruciatus Curse) - "Cruciato" is Latin for "to torture.". One of the "Unforgivable Curses", causes the victim to suffer almost intolerable pain

Entrail-Expelling Curse - Apparently this curse causes the victim's insides to come out of them

Hurling Hex - A nasty kind of curse that can be placed on a broom. The effect is presumably to make the target broom attempt to hurl its rider off

Imperio (Imperius Curse) - "Impero" is Latin for "to control" and "imperium" is Latin for "absolute control."

Morsmordre (makes the Dark Mark appear in the sky) - Combination between "mors" (Latin for "death") and "modere" (Latin for "to bite".) Death bite? No -- Death Eater.
