Women in Black is an international peace network, a means of mobilization and a formula for action. Women in Black vigils started in Jerusalem in 1988, by Israeli women protesting against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. The movement spread rapidly and Palestinian women joined the vigils. During 1990’ies Women in Black spread globally, and nowadays groups are active in countries such as Italy, Canada, Spain, Germany, England, Azerbaijan, Colombia and Yugoslavia, where for instance women in Belgrade stood in weekly vigils since 1991 to protest war and policies of nationalist aggression. Women in Black groups have formed in more than 200 cities. The main issue today is violence and women’s position generally, and the WiB activities in each country aim at taking a stand on the central and topical issues of their own country or region. WiB is a religiously and politically independent peace network of women. The demonstrations follow the original model: silent and dressed in black. Black symbolizes sorrow, and with silence we direct attention to suffering that has no words.

In Finland the Women-in-Black, “Naiset Mustissa”, began in the city of Tampere in April 2002. Around twenty active women are involved, and altogether some 60 women participate in the activities. Since that, another active group of Women-in-Black has started in the city of Vaasa.

The Tampere WiB has organized silent demonstrations, public lectures and discussions, and participated in seminars on peace. The field of activities is wide: we take a stand on current issues of women’s position in a violent world, from world peace to sexualised violence within the family. The Tampere WiB has a regular open meeting on the first Sunday of every month, in the cafe Runo, Ojakatu, at 16.00. For more information, click wibfinland@yahoo.com You are welcome to join us!
