Buffy and her mother have just moved to Sunnydale to get Buffy into a new school after her expulsion for burning down the last one. Buffy is intent on staying out of trouble, but that’s a little hard in Sunnydale, a town on top of an evil portal called the Hellmouth. Already, she’s having nightmare visions of a vampire lair underground.
Early on, Buffy meets Cordelia, who is thrilled to meet her since she’s from L.A., and promises to keep her away from un-cool people. She also meets with Willow and asks for help on schoolwork. Two of Willow’s friends, Xander and Jesse, join the two of them, and they become fast friends, jeopardizing Buffy’s friendship with Cordelia.
Later, in search of textbook, Buffy meets the new librarian, Giles, who has been appointed her new watcher, and is eager to help her start her new slaying career. Buffy wants none of it, but when a corpse is found in one of the school lockers with holes in his neck and all his blood drained, she knows it’s time to do something. But, she has her social life to worry about as well, and that night she heads to the Bronze, a local club where everyone hangs out.
On the way, she notices she is being followed and ambushes her pursuer, who claims he wants to help her. He cryptically warns her of the upcoming “Harvest,” and gives her a small box that she finds holds a silver cross pendant. Buffy continues on to the Bronze and finds her new friend, Willow, there.
Giles is also there, and warns Buffy that the Bronze is a prime target for vampires, and recommends that she watch for vampires there. Looking down from a balcony, she notices a vampire talking to Willow, but when she goes downstairs to find him, he and Willow are gone.
In the meantime, in an underground lair, vampires lurk around a pool of blood. Slowly, a figure rises from it—a very old vampire called the Master. He tells Luke, one of his faithful servants, that he wants food, and asks Luke to bring him prey.
Frantically, Buffy searches for Willow and the vampire, but is unable to find them. She meets Xander outside the Bronze, and they go together to try to find Willow, who has been brought to a mausoleum in preparation for the Master. Jesse is also there, brought by another vampire named Darla.
Buffy and Xander arrive at the mausoleum just in time, and Buffy kills the vampire who brought Willow, and fights with Darla. She has the upper hand until Luke appears suddenly. Xander and Willow try to help Jesse escape as Buffy fights Luke, but Darla and a few other vampires track them down and surround them. In the meantime, Luke pins Buffy in a sarcophagus and is about to make a midnight snack of her...
The story concludes with “The Harvest”
