Newcomers Guide to Ta'Vaalor
Hail good citizen, and welcome to Ta'Vaalor, the military fortress of the Elven Nations. You will find most all amenities of a thriving city here, with more to come. Listen to the suggestions of this Dwarven guardsman and you will learn how to fit into the Vaalorian lifestyle with the least amount of problems from the citizens and militia. I've spent my entire training here in Ta'Vaalor since the day the Elves opened the city gates, and raised up the Second Militia of Ta'Vaalor, so you may benefit from my rantings.
If you get lost inside the city, anyone can get DIRECTIONS to where they want to go. Lockers are found in the north section of the fortress in Wyrven Hall. You can also pay your local debts there. Brand new adventurers can find work running messages for Sassion in the building by the Vermillion Gate or asking other merchants for work. Silverwood Manor is on the west side of the city, and new adventurers can get help from Mentors by ringing the bell there. Mistydeep Manor provides a weekly tour of our city on Volnes evenings. Be sure to take advantage of it. Clan Snar provides Helping Paws for all residents on Restday evenings, offering spells, bashing, picking, imbedding, etc. to help us.
Fitting in as a resident or guest of Ta'Vaalor is mostly about respecting your fellow adventurers while maintaining your own sense of style. Since you are new to town, I'll explain a little bit about what's expected of the civilized folks in general within our Fortress.
Most citizens congregate around Victory Court North, as this is the spirit return area frequented by empaths and clerics. Be sure to thank those who help you, and offering a tip shows you are a civilized person. In times of emergencies, such as invasions, we ask everyone who is not healing, raising, or helping the healers and raisers to move one south to Victory Court, by Kai's Shrine. This would be for resting after having your life restored, spelling up yourself and others, and other general socialization. Our empaths and clerics are quite overworked during emergencies and need to keep a good eye out on their patients. Patients, please don't constantly repeat that you need healing or raising....you will be taken care of. Taking care of you all can be quite hard with any extra noise in the area. Those working here need to see when your life-keep wears out. It's even recommended we use Kai's Shrine as the place for spells (self and mass) at all times, if possible.
Also in Victory Court North is a bench to place donations on. Herbs to help heal you when no empaths are about, tinctures to help heal the dead bodies, clothes, weapons, crystals, flasks, wands, etc., can be found here. If you need an item on the bench, please feel free to take it (though you might want to keep the tinctures there to help the dead).
The antique shop does not offer us resale tables to buy used goods, so we try to help supply those in need. You will earn a respected place in the city by placing your extra items here. However, it would be quite rude of you to take an item from the bench to sell to our antique dealer. Please don't act like a barbarian and you won't be treated as one.
Donations such as weapons, clothes, jewelry, etc. can also be made in the bin at Silverwood Manor for new adventurers. Our mentors are here to help you, if you are new, so don't be shy in asking them for help.
Locksmiths can usually be found in Victory Court South. Remember, lock picks are very expensive, so don't be shy with your tips. It is requested that you do not pick boxes in the healing/raising area. We understand that you might be a master locksmith, but we want to set good examples for the young locksmiths just starting their trade. You will find Ta'Vaalor to be full of elders who set good examples, even if some are quite evil in other ways.
Communication has been the key to much of our success here. We think very highly of each and every one of you and will try to protect you from decay as much as we can. The first step is with you. Please let us know where you are hunting in case we do not have any locators and/or foggers around (which is not uncommon). If you are going to rescue someone, let us know you are handling it. If you see someone go to rescue someone, let us know. Advise us what areas you will check for a corpse so we can check other areas and communicate that. If someone asks on the net about someone, let them know if they are back in Victory Court being worked on. If we all work together to communicate rescue efforts, decays can be kept to the bare minimum.
We don't have much of a black market here in Ta'Vaalor; as a matter of fact, you will find many honorable people offering nice items to needy adventurers. If you do have items of interest for sale, let us know on the thought net to pull our amulets to hear about your great sale! Please do not use the regular net to sell items.
We speak only in Common, Race, or Guild speak here. Talking in OOC-speak is frowned upon. Speaking of your AS, DS, CS, TD, as well as words such as LOL, Afk, Brb, Dude, and Cool(or kewl) may get you funny looks. Other slang such as ::laugh::, ::snort::, ::hugs::: and :) may ruin your reputation too. This goes for the amunet as well.
Always being alert to answer other adventurer's queries is a sure way of gaining respect. Sleeping in public is an example of how you will earn disrespect. Many of us feel uncomfortable with homeless on the streets.
Whether you are an evil mage who hates us Dwarves, or a sweet witch who uses her magics to bewitch us all with helpful spells, you will be respected in Ta'Vaalor and become a part of the community by following the simple rules of common courtesy. This works both ways: If you see someone in the area acting like a barbarian, being respectful and teaching them in an honorable way leaves a much better impression than acting like a barbarian yourself and casting a spell on him.
We encourage everyone to be true to themselves, whether you are evil, grumpy, moody, honorable or dishonorable. You can be all that you are and still maintain respect for yourself and others. In some situations it's better to keep your mouth closed than be thought a fool yourself. Teaching others to have common courtesy is best handled by those who can show common courtesy.
Welcome to the best city in all of Elanith; may your stay leave you with fondest memories of a sense of community the way it was meant to be.
