
Herbs have been used by man since the beginning of his time here on Earth, as medicine and magick. I grow and use several herbs myself. I rely heavily on 'Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Herbs', the definitive book on Herbal Magick written by the late, great Scott Cunningham. You can grow herbs on a sunny windowsill, or throughout the yard, either in an herb garden, or in pots or among other flowers. In fact, rosemary makes a great hedge! Here are a few herbal associations to get you started.
Bay
Bay is of the element fire, and is used in purification and protection, to gain psychic power, and in wish magick.
Cactus
I grow cactus in a pot by the back-door to ward off evil entities, and to protect against theft. It is of the fire element.
Catnip
I use catnip in rituals and offerings to Both Bast and Angus Mac Og, as it is considered sacred to both.It is of the water element, and is used in Cat Magick, beauty, happiness and love spells.
Copal
Copal is a resin that is usually used as an incense for love or protection. It is of the fire element.
Dragon's Blood
Dragons'blood is another resin, also of the fire element. It is burned to gain protection, potency, love, in exorcism, and to summon dragons.
Horehound
Horehound is of the element of air, and is sacred to the Egyptian deity Horus. It is used for protection, mental powers, and healing. It is excellent for sore throats.
Lavender
Lavender is of the air element, and is used in communication and love magick, as well as to calm, and also to aid in Faerie glamour.
Lemon Balm
Of the element water, lemon balm is used for love, success, and healing magick.
Marjoram
Marjoram is used to promote happiness, and in health, protection, money and love enchantments. It is of the element air. It makes me feel better just to smell it!
Mint
Mint comes in many varieties, such as chocolate, lemon, orange, grapefruit and others. Each type can be used for the associated property of its fragrance. In general, it is used to create money spells, arouse lust, for travel and healing magick, and for protection.It is of the element air.
Mugwort
Mugwort is used medicinally for bruises, and for strength, pschic awareness and prophecy, healing, and in Flying ointments and powders.(astral travel)It is of the Earth element, and is sacred to Artemis, and Diana.
Passion Flower
Passion flower is of the element of water, and is used in peace and sleep spells, to gain popularity and friends, and for me, quite a bit in my passion and lust workings. It is my absolute favorite flower to grow. This vining herb goes crazy, and would be perfect for arbors.
Patchouli
I love this earth element herb, and when I wear the oil I feel strongly attractive and enchanting. It is used in lust spells, and also to bring money.
Pennyroyal
Pennyroyal is of the fire element, and used for strength, the cessation of arguments, and protection.
Pine
Pine is for fertility, healing, money and protection. I use it in my rites to Pan.It is ruled by air.
Rosemary
Rosemary is useful for almost all magickal purposes, and I especially like to grow some for the Good Folk.
Sage
Sage is of the air element, and is for wish magick, longevity and immortality, wisdom and wishes, as well as protection.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood is a delicious wood powder and oil used to gain wishes, add power to other spells, and for protection, healing and spiritual quests.It is associated with the element of water.
Thyme
Thyme is of the water element, and is a favorite of the little people. It promotes courage, healing, purification, sleep, love and psychic powers.
Wormwood
Wormwood, or Absinthe, as it is also called, is great in spells involving intuition, phrophecy, astral travel, love, and calling forth spirits. A fire elemental herb, it is also sacred to Iris, the goddess of the rainbow.How wonderfully gay!
