Treebeard (Fangorn), was an Ent who during the Third Age of the sun was the oldest living being in the Mortal Lands. Merry and Pippin, after escaping from their Uruk-Hai captures, were lost in the forest Fangorn when they met Treebeard. Treebeard had never heard of hobbits so was interested and want to learn of them. Merry and Pippin then went on to tell him about the quest and the Fellowship and of the orcs and of Saruman. They learned of how Treebeard hated orcs because they destroyed the trees of his forest. Treebeard was the head of the ents and great friends to Gandalf. He and the ents aided Gandalf in the victory at Helm's Deep and the destruction of the fortress Isengard, home of Saruman. Holding him there until Gandalf arived at took Sarumans powers. The ent's then destroyed the tower (Saruman had already fled) and made a beautiful gadrden out of the once evil fortress.
