Head of the Istari, this wizard was the strongest (in the ways of magic) of the
five messengers sent by the Valar. Clad in white robes he was most knowledgeable
about crafts and skills and even became known by the elves as Curunir, meaning "Man of Skill." The only knowledge which was greater then his knowledge of skill and crafts was his knowledge of the One Ring and as he learned more about it the more he came to desire it. To obtain the ring Saruman bred army of human-orc
hybrids called the Uruk-Hai. With this army he led a siege against the kingdom of Rohan, but with the assistance of Gandalf the armies of Rohan were led to victory agaist Saruman's armies and the Uruk-Hai defeated. Saruman, his armies gone, took refuge in the tower of Isengard which was sieged by the Ents of Fangorn. Gandalf then came to Isengard and, destroying Saruman's staff, took his power. Saruman, full of wrath, looked to the small land of the Shire for vengence. In a pathetic attempt to feel power once more, Saruman tried to gain control of the Shire, but failed. Led by Frodo Baggins the Hobbits overthrew Saruman and regained control of their home. Saruman was then slain by the only follower he had left, Grima Wormtongue. His Maia spirit then rose from his body and floated over the mortal land, but a wind came and swept Saruman from Middle-Earth.
