Roane
Roane is a relatively young Kingdome for the west coast, located north of Armania and south of the Kellsor Highlands. Bordered easterly by the Misty Mountains and partially touching the west coast. Roane is a respected Kingdome know to defend with an iron fist and broker peace between warring nations with incredible fairness. The majority of Roane is made up of the northern end of the great plains of midland. This part of the plains are often called the Roane Fields. There are some deciduous forests in the northern and western part of the Kingdome. Much of Roane consists of rolling hills, especially as you go north and east. This Kingdome is sparsely populated. There are three major communities of Roane, each a moderate sized city surrounded by smaller villages. With fertile soil throughout the Kingdome farming is good but populations never reached the levels of Armania due mostly to the history of Roane. This Kingdome is also know for its superior breed of horses and unrivaled cavalry.
History:
Many historians believe that as the Uranian Empire concurred what is now Armania, some of the people fled north as refuges. They began to build settlements within the rolling plains of Midland. Sparsely populated by Kels or a similar breed the two peoples coexisted peacefully. As the Uranian Empire spread many of the peoples formed alliances to fend off any threat of invasion. Eventually becoming a unified nation some 1600 years ago. Then followed 200 or so years of turbulence as factions struggled to become the king. Some what weakened at this point, the Uranians would have had little trouble concurring this land, however the empire never expanded any further north. Following the influx of refuges fleeing the Uranian Empire and the merging of the two cultures the Roane people became more isolated, restricting the settlement of the land and peacefully developing the new Kingdom. The Shadow Wars saw a new political involvement of the Kingdom, and Roane soon became known as strong defenders of the land and powerful allies. This political view persists to this day. Some 100 years ago Roane was invaded by Midth (this Kingdom no longer exists). Along with Armania, and to some level Lyone, Roane became imbroiled in a 2 year war. As the war with Midth wound down invading orc forces swept from the east launching another two years of war with the orcs. (The orc wars spread over much of the west coast.) Since repelling the orcs, Roane has had a fairly peaceful reign, only minor clan raids from Kellsor and the Northmen involve Roane.
Government:
A monarchy, Roane has one King that rules the whole land. His capital is in Wyn Inish. Lords act as the King’s liaison in the other two major cities, Wyn Ceardon and Wyn Tearish. The lords as well as the common people are allowed to own land within Roane, but only by the Kings permission. Additionally much of the Roane Fields and woodlands are kept as ‘Kings Land’ for the people. Since the Shadow Wars, Roane’s Kings have held a reputation as wise and fair rulers. The Kingdom has maintained a powerful Calvary and well respected army, but perhaps more impressive is that Roane is often sought as moderator in disputes.
Commerce:
Roane is a major producer of grains and hay, some of this is exported to neighboring areas. Heard animal are also common within the Raone Fields. Of materials lacking within Roane’s own possession , raw minerals are by far the most needed. Iron is imported from the Misty Mountains. Of course the superior bread of horses bred within Roane, are often sought by others. It is an honor indeed to be sold a horse of Roane, for these animals are greatly prized.
Culture:
The people of Roane are believed to be a mixture of three cultures, the Arians, Cormyr and the Kels. Although much of the culture of the Kels can still be seen in Roane, this Kingdom has developed their own culture. The clannish tendencies of the Kels are gone and a loyalty to the King is strong. The Roanes value freedom and open space. History and culture are important to Roanes, not only their own but other cultures as well. Bards are honored within Roane. Their music is lively and their dance energetic. Many stringed instruments are played by these people but fiddle and a heavy stringed instrument resembling a banjo are often among the favorites. Additionally an instrument similar to the Kel pipes are played within Roane. These pipes are played seated and the wind is provided by bellows instead of by the lungs like the Kel pipes.
