Mentors
It is our hope, that our mentors can find this page useful in choosing topics to discuss with their mentees. It is also sort of designed as a reference guide – for when you are asked those questions that make you raise your eyebrows, scratch your head and just say “huh?” ;o)
Mentees
For our mentees, we would like you to be able to use this site to get the most basic of information about a smattering of different topics. So take your time and browse through :o) If you find a topic that interests you, be sure to ask your mentor about it to get the whole deal ;o)

Getting To The Guild

Some of our guild members will “bookmark” the guild on their internet browser in order to be able to get there more quickly without navigating through half of Neopia :o) To do this, go to the guild home page:

http://www.neopets.com/guilds/guild.phtml?oid=cute_chic4eva

Then, go to the top of your browser window. Using Internet Explorer, there is a Menu at the top. One of the Menu items is “Favourites” click on this and select “Add to Favourites”. Going to the guild home page and pressing “Ctrl” and “D” at the same time will do the same thing.

If you do not have Internet Explorer, and are unsure about how to save a website to your favourites, write to us at booklovers_academy and we will help you out :o)

Guild Website

Our Guild Website possesses a wealth of information. Many members have worked hard to compile all the information that is on it – so take the time to go visit it :o) Answers to some of the questions you have can most likely be found there. Since we cannot link to non-neopets sites, you will need to copy and paste the website address (below) into the address bar of your browser window. In fact, it’s a pretty good page to add to your favourites as well ;o)

At the top of the guild website, you will find a double bar of all kinds of different headings, from Activities to Tips. Simply click on the heading that you want and it will take you there. To find the guild map and add yourself to it, look at the left hand side. Do not forget that some pages also have additional navigation on the left hand side. For example, if you click on rules, when the new page loads there will be a drop down menu to the left that will list Guild Rules, Posting Rules, Promotion Rules and RPG Board rules. There are several pages that will have this additional menu, so be sure to check :o)

Guild Policies
Guild Rules

Our guild has a fairly large membership – usually hovering around the 2000 mark, give or take some. This means that in order to keep things running smoothly and to have a happy guild for everyone, it does require some rules. The number one rule in our guild is RESPECT. You need to respect the people around you. All the other rules simply follow from that. You can find a complete list of guild rules on the Guild Website :o)

Message Board Etiquette

Our guild message board is our forum for our members to express themselves – whether they tell us about their adventures in Neopia, the latest book they are reading, something interesting they saw, or little triumphs and tribulations of life in general.

Once again, there is a complete list of all posting rules found on the guild website :o) As a general guideline, keep your posts long – instead of posting several small messages, post one long one :o) Make sure that your posts contain content that would be interesting to everyone. If it is likely to be interesting to only one or two people, perhaps you should neomail those people instead. Use only default text for the main body of your message, and avoid chatspeak, as we have members from all over the world and not everyone speaks English as a first language.

The rule of respect applies to posting as well. You are not allowed to beg on the board. People have worked hard to earn their neopoints. Neither is spamming or flaming allowed. Spamming is when you post multiple short messages within a short amount of time. Remember to combine into one large one and keep it interesting ;o) Flaming is when you post unnecessary, rude, or derogatory comments about another person, or directed at another person. These violate the rules of respect and will be deleted immediately along with any other post that breaks the rules.

You are more than welcome to post a request for Quest help on the message board, as we have many helpful members who enjoy aiding others with their quests. However, remember that this is ONLY for the random Faerie quests that you receive and for which you are prevented from using the shop wizard. Voluntary quests like snow faerie quests and kitchen quests you can and should use the shop wizard. Also, as mentioned in the posting rules, it is VERY important that you post again once you have received help. If you will not be able to post your completion within 30 minutes, you should wait to request the help when you have the time to wait for it.

Guild Shops
Shop Rules

Each guild shop has its own specific rules. You should visit each shop to find out its rules before contacting the shopkeepers about them.

The easiest way to get to the shops is by clicking on the appropriate picture found on the bookshelf on the guild home page. If you cannot find the shop rules, or find them, read them, and still have questions, ask your mentor :o)

If you are unsure, you can always neomail the shop. The shopkeepers will not mind answering your questions, but that should be a last resort :o)

Donations

We welcome donations to our guild shops, but make sure you’re sending things to the right shops :o) Most shops will state on their lookups or petpages what they accept or what they do not accept.

Requests

Once again, each shop has its own requirements when it comes to requests, so check them out :o)

Gift Certificates

Sometimes, for various guild activities, (you can find all the guild activities under the “Activities” tab on the guild website) a gift certificate is given as a prize.

A gift certificate works at the guild shops like it would work at a shop in real life. You can request something from the shop, and as long as it falls within the value of your gift certificate, they will give it to you.

All the shops communicate with each other, so you can use your certificate to buy smaller items from different shops, or one large item. They will know when your certificate is all used up.

If you have less than 5 items to donate, you can send them directly to the shop. More than 5 and you should use the trades. If you are unsure how to send items or use the trades, ask your mentor :oD

As a general rule, you may not request from the guild shops until you have reached Apprentice status.

Some shops do not give value (with regard to promotions) for donations. These are the Quest shop and the Academy.

Also, you need to donate at least sometimes to be able to request. Each shop has their own rules for this as well, and will likely send you a gentle reminder if you are requesting MUCH more than you are donating.

Ranks and Promotions

There are four main ranks within the guild. They are, in ascending order: bookworm, apprentice, librarian, professor. Promotions are done once a month and are based on your activity within in the guild in the past month. Posting, donations, participating in activities, being a generally active and helpful member will help you get a promotion. Receiving reminders for breaking rules, or just being a nuisance in general will prevent you from getting promoted.

A good place to go for information on promotions is Madame_Baguette’s petpage. You can find the petpage by typing Madame_Baguette into the search box in the yellow left-hand side bar. There will be an icon of a lupe’s head with “Pet Page” written under it. When you click on it, it will take you to the pet page :o)

Guild Workers

First Council
First Council consists of the Grand Librarian, Senior Monitor, Master Welcomer and Activities Director. These are the people who make the big decisions in the guild. Council meetings are usually held once a month. If you have concerns, ideas or comments, you can take them to a member of first council. Make sure to only contact one first council member though. They all communicate with each other so there’s no need to write each of them separately :o) You can find information on each of these positions by clicking on the “Council” Link on the guild website :o)

Second Council
Second Council is made up of the Treasurer, Webmaster, and all head shopkeepers. Each shop has a Head Shopkeeper and at least one Assistant. These are the people who are responsible for looking after the guild shops and making sure they run smoothly. You can find out who the shopkeepers and assistant are by clicking on the “Shops” link on the guild website :o)

Council Liaison
One other position in the Guild Administration that is not techinically a member of the First or Second Councils, but does attend Council meeetings and vote, is the Council Liaison. The Liaison's main duties are to ensure communication between the two Councils, work out conflicts between members of the Guild Staff, and represent Shopkeeper concerns at Council meetings. This is also someone you can talk to if you think that the council has acted unfairly.

Monitors
Our guild monitors are the people who watch the message board and make sure that everyone is following the posting rules. They don’t just spend all their time nitpicking and sending reminders though :o) They also answer general questions, help people find out where to go (for example, directing you to our Mentoring Program here at the Academy) and provide help with quests. They work hard to keep the boards tidy, so be respectful of them. They don’t give you reminders because they don’t like you--they give you reminders because you’ve broken the rules.

Web Design Team
Our Web Design Team are the lovely people who work hard to make everything look pretty :o) They look after the Guild Website, the main Guild Home Page (with the bookshelf image), ensure that everything is up to date and generally do a lot of “behind the scenes” work that most of us don’t know about :o) So remember to spare some appreciation for the quiet ones ;o)

Newspaper Staff
We have a wonderful staff who work hard to get our newspaper, the Baguette Gazette up and running each month with information, jokes, stories, puzzles and lots of other fun stuff. If you are interested in writing for the guild newspaper you can contact the Editor in Chief :o) The newspaper is put out around the 15th of each month. You can find it by clicking on the “Gazette” link on the guild website :o)

The Pets

Well, being as Neopets is all about the pets, I suppose we might as well get to them ;o) You can have up to 4 neopets – whether you create them yourself, or adopt some, or a mixture of the two is up to you. Once a pet is named, you cannot change its name.

Sometimes fellow guild members will adopt pets with unfortunate names and foster them for a while, fixing them up and taking them to the lab ray if they have it. So if you are looking for a new pet to adopt, you may want to check out the adoptions page one the guild website :o)

Feeding Your Pet
It’s important to keep your pets fed. To see your pets hunger level on their lookup, go to pet central and then quick reference. If you do not feed them, they will eventually reach the status of dying. Your pets will NOT actually die, but they’ll not be happy either. If you go to Pet Central and click on “Feed Pets” (the picture of an apple) there is more information on feeding your pets.

Moods
Your pet’s mood is found on the pet’s look up as well. They range from miserable to delighted. The best way to keep your pet happy is to play with it. Once you reach the delighted level, your pet will stay delighted with less effort.

Sick Pets
Your pets can get sick from eating certain foods, from some of the Wheels, or from random events. To find out what remedy is needed to cure your pet, you can visit the pharmacy. However, most cures can be costly. By visiting the healing springs each half hour, she will eventually cure your pets for free.

Statistics
For more information on your pet’s statistics, visit the guild website. Under the “Links” heading, if you scroll down you will find a section titled “Your Pets”. There is a link called “Pet Statistics that has all kind of neat information listed.

Pet Day
Each pet has its own day. You can find it by going to the World page and looking at the calendar. On a pet’s day, you can take them to the Swashbuckling Academy on Krawk Island for free training.

Petpets
Petpets are pets that you can give to your neopet. It tends to keep your pet happier with less work on your part if you have a petpet. Some are very inexpensive and serve the same purpose as an expensive one.

Petpetpets
Petpetpets are pets that you can give to your petpets. If you visit the guild website, under the Tips link there is a section on petpetpets.

Shop Wizard
The shop wizard helps you to search for items in stores owned by other Neopians (people like yourself!) He’s a little dinky though – so if you know EXACTLY what you are looking for, it will probably help if you tell it to look for the exact item. Refreshing the page a couple of times will give you the most accurate range of prices (as each search he looks at a different area, so prices can be higher or lower). For more detail about using the shop wizard, ask your mentor :o)

Quests
There are two different types of Quests to be found in Neopia: there are random faerie quests (which, as mentioned above, you are allowed to request help with on the guild message board) and there are voluntary quests found throughout the map which you are NOT allowed to request help with on the guild message board. More information can be found about quests by visiting the guild website, clicking on the Tips link and selecting “Quests”.

Random Faerie Quests
These pop up on your screen while you travel about Neopia. The more you refresh a page, the better chance you have of receiving one. This is why playing non-flash games sometimes helps. You need to find the item the faerie asks for and return it to them in Faerieland. You can refuse to do a quest if you think it too expensive, but your chance to receive another quest anytime soon will be reduced.

Snow Faerie (Taelia)
Taelia is found at the top of Terror Mountain. She will ask you to bring her back several items. It’s generally a good idea not to spend more than 2000 NP as you will not usually receive enough to make it worth it if you spend more than that. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Jhudorah
Jhudorah is found in Faerieland. Her quests run by levels. For more information on the levels and what their rewards are, visit the guild website and click on Links, then select Quests and scroll down until you find it. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Illusen
Illusen is found In Meridell. Her quests run by levels as well. For more information on the levels and what their rewards are, visit the guild website and click on Links, then select Quests and scroll down until you find it. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Kitchen Quests
Kitchen Quests are found on mystery Island. You will be asked for items which you return. Sometimes you will receive an item as reward, or your pet will have a stat increased. This can be good for battledomers as often it will cost less to do the quest than to pay for training. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Edna
Edna is also found in the Haunted Woods. She will ask you for an item and will generally give you a small amount of NP and a spooky food for your troubles. Nothing fancy. The bonus is that when doing her quests, you can randomly receive and avatar. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Brain Tree/Esophagor

These are found in the Haunted Woods. Brain Tree Quests are linked to Esophagor quests. There is really no point to doing an esophagor quest on its own. To complete a brain tree quest, you need to do two esophagor quests. The first one will give you the date, the second will give you the place. It’s generally a good idea not to spend more than 2000 NP as you will not usually receive enough to make it worth it if you spend more than that. This is a voluntary quest for which you are able to use the shop wizard.

Earning Neopoints
Earning neopoints is something that is near and dear to a majority of Neopians. There are multiple ways to earn neopoints, but be aware that there are NO get-rich-quick schemes in Neopia. Anyone who tries to tell you there are, is not being truthful and could end up with you getting your account frozen. Two of the best ways to earn money are playing games and running a shop. Your mentor should be able to help you with some tips on either of these methods. ;o)

Neohomes
A neohome is a virtual house for you and your pets in Neopia. One of our guild members, Mickeymab, has provided us with a neat little introduction to neohomes. To get started, you can find the link to neohomes on the shops tool bar. It is the little blue house on the far right. The first step in getting a neohome is to reserve a plot of land. The prices vary depending on where you want to build:

Neopia Central @ 1,000nps
Mystery Island @ 2,500nps
Tyrannia @ 3,500nps
Spooky Woods @ 5,000nps
Lost Desert @ 7,500nps
Meridell @ 8,000nps
Roo Island @ 9,000nps
Terror Mountain @ 15,000nps
Faerieland @ 25,000nps

Once the land is ready, you can start building. Click on “add/remove rooms or gardens” & select area where you want walls built. You do have to start from the Ground Level otherwise you home will have no foundation. Neopia hasn’t yet figured out how to have floating homes ;o)

There are 25 areas per level where a room or garden can be built: 0,0 at the top left corner, 0,1; 0,2; 0,3; & 0,4 then again with 1,0; 1,1; etc. down to 4,4 at the bottom right corner of the grid. Gardens can only be built on the ground floor.

It will then ask you to name your room – although this is not mandatory, it is nice to know which room you are entering, especially if you have planning to build a multi-room home. You can also change the name of your rooms at any time by clicking on “Add/remove rooms or gardens” link, renaming the room & the clicking on “Update Room”. Be careful not to click on “Remove room” or you will lose all your items & will not be refunded your nps!

Once the construction is completed, you can then furnish your new home to your heart’s content. For a full list of available furniture & garden items, visit http://www.neoitems.net. There are tons of items available in Neopia to suit everyone’s sense of style and budget.

Pros

Looks pretty if well made

Virtual play area for your pets & friends

A nice personal Neopets goal

You could enter the Home Spotlight (http://www.neopets.com/homespotlight.phtml) & maybe even win!

Cons

You will not be refunded for removing any room/garden or extension

Pets can’t really move around the rooms

Can be a costly project

Neo glitches – at this time, there are quite a few glitches with neohomes. For example, a rug could be floating in mid-air, with your table & other items, below the rug or a statue could end up below the table or shelf. Hopefully these glitches will soon be resolved by the Neopets Team.

Tips

It helps to have a general plan of how you want your home to look & feel.

Make a budget & try to stick to it. If left unchecked, you could find yourself spending more than anticipated for new rooms & furniture.

If you are building multiple rooms, make a layout on paper of where you want each room to be & where the entrances will be, so your doors do not meet a wall in the next room.

If you ever decide to remove a room, make sure you remove the items from the room first or you will lose them all.

For more information on Neohomes, do not forget to visit: http://www.frontiernet.net/~cybraria/Neohome/neohome.htm. It is a guide put together by our very own Cybraria and can be found by a link on the guild website under Links and then Guides as well. You can find sample layouts of each room finish and aerial views of how the furniture appears in your home. This could help you decide on the item to purchase as they do tend to look different once they are in the room/garden. Basically, if you can’t find it in that guide, we probably don’t know either. :o)

Battledome
The battledome is place where you can take your pets to compete against pets belonging to other Neopians, or to play against foes provided within Neopia. A brief guide has been provided by Beagle008, a fellow Guild of Booklovers member. :o)

To visit the battledome, click here. Isn’t it a great place? To battle a challenger, go to ‘1 player’, select your pet, and a challenger. You can get more challengers via random events, or if you go to a certain place. For a list of all the challengers, and how to get them, go here: http://idb.finalhit.org/?searchtype=oneplayer. You win a fight when your opponent has not Hit Points left.

Well, you won’t be able to fight without weapons… There are both offensive and defensive weapons. Offensive weapons will deal icons. The more icons a weapon does, the more damage it’ll do (the more icons it’ll take). Defensive weapons will stop certain icons. (and prevent them from doing damage to your pet).

How much damage one icon does to your opponent, depends on your pet’s strength. For example, if your pet has strength 8, each icon will do 0.75 damage. (If it isn’t stopped by a defensive weapon.) If your pet has strength 20, each icon will do 1.25 damage. Get it? Here’s a full list: (If your pet is in between two strength boosts, it will do the lowest damage of the two, so if your pet is strength 19, it will still do 1.0 damage/icon).

Strength – Damage
0 - 0.5
8 - 0.75
13 - 1.0
20 - 1.25
35 - 1.5
55 - 2.0
85 - 2.5
125 - 3.0
200 - 4.5
250 - 5.5
300 - 6.5
350 - 7.5
400 - 8.5
450 - 9.5
500 - 11.0
550 - 12.0
600 - 13.0
650 - 14.0
700 - 15.0

The defence of your pet works with the same list; your pet will block more damage if he/she reaches one of the defence stats. You can equip your pet with up to 8 weapons. You’ll be able to choose from these weapons during the battle. You’ll also have to choose your pet’s stance: normal, defence, fierce,…

Normal stance is a good balance between attack and defence, fierce attack lets you do more damage, but you’ll receive more damage yourself. Defence lets you stop more damage, at the cost of doing less damage. As an alternative for the stances, you can use ‘abilities’. Abilities are granted to your (active) pet by releasing a bottled faerie. For a full list of faeries, and what they do, click here.

Well, these are the basics of fighting in battledome. If you want any more information, make sure to visit the Guild’s webpage, or check the ‘Eye on the Battledome’ articles in the previous Baguette Gazettes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get a gallery?

A gallery is simply a shop that someone uses to display items rather than to sell. You do this by pricing the items above 100,000 neopoints. You cannot have two shops on the same account, so some Neopians create second accounts for the purpose of having a gallery. Be aware that in this second account you are not allowed to play games or collect freebies, or you’ll risk having ALL of your accounts frozen.

What are the little pictures under my name on the message board?

The little pictures under your name are called avatars. To change to a different avatar, you click on Board over in the dark yellow side bar on the left hand side. At the top of the new page is a little blue heading called chat preferences. When you click there, at the top you will see a drop down list of all the different avatars you can use. At the very bottom are secret avatars that you can get. To find out how to get the secret avatars, you can visit the guild website and under Tips there are links to sites that tell you how to get them.

How do I send items? (to someone who isn’t a neofriend?)

To send an item to someone who is a neofriend, simply click on the item. In the dialogue box that pops up, select their name from the drop down list and hit send. If they are not your neofriend, simply type their username into the box provided. You need to have at least one neofriend to be able to do this.

Why won’t the shop accept me as a neofriend? How do I get neofriends?

Most guild shops will not accept new neofriends, as we have a large membership in our guild and if the shops had EVERYONE as neofriends, it would be unmanageable. However, you will find that through talking with fellow guild members (for instance, neomailing them if you see them post something that piques your interest), many would be more than happy to be your neofriends :o) Remember that it’s nice to talk to someone and at least introduce yourself before you request them to be your neofriend.

How do I change my user lookup/shop background/petpage?

If you visit the guild website, under the Links section, if you scroll down you will find a heading called “Guides”. There, you fill find the “Guild’s HTML Help Page” that has been put together by out webmaster. There’s a lot of general information there about HTML. Also, check out some of the helpful links for code that you can cut and paste into the appropriate areas. ;o)

Why can’t I use the Rainbow Fountain?

You can only use the Rainbow Fountain after you have completed a faerie quest from the Fountain Faerie. Her quests pop up like any other random faerie quest except they are much rarer. She can pick anything under the sun, prices ranging from a couple thousand, to a couple hundred thousand. However, the reward for helping her is to be able to visit her at the fountain and have one of your pets painted the colour of your choice! It’s important to make sure that the item she asks for doesn’t cost more than the paint brush you would need anyway.

What are neggs and how do I get them?

There are basically two types of neggs. Some of them can be eaten by your pets. Of the ones that can be eaten, some have neat side effects. Other neggs are purely decorative. If you visit the guild website (the URL is found underneath the bookshelf on the guild home page) there's a link to an article from the Neopian Times about neggs. Simply click on Links at the top, and then scroll down the page to the Guides section and one of the is called "All About Neggs". That will tell you about various neggs and their abilities and how many points they're worth at the neggery and stuff.

How do I get dubloons/ codestones/ faeries?

These items can be received randomly from various freebies – codestones and faeries can be received from Tombola, while dubloons can be received from Coltzan’s Shrine. You can also find them sometimes as random events. Other than that, the only places to get them are from other user’s shops using the Shop Wizard.

How do I train my pet?

There are two places to train your pet: one is at the Swashbuckling Academy on Krawk Island. It costs dubloons to train there. The other is at the Training School on Mystery Island. It costs codestones to train there and you won’t know which codestone you need until you start the course.

Helpful Sites
If you visit our guild website (really, seriously and truly – most if not ALL of the information on this page can be found there. You really should visit it!) you can find a variety of links to other sites that provide help with Neopian issues. You need to go to the guild website and click on Links. At the very bottom of the Links page is a section that contains various help sites such a Tine Neo Help, Neoitems, and SoupFaerie. So you should definitely check it out!
