On Easter Sunday, Edmund left town, driving Sara's car eastward, going no where in particular. Once he was three states away in Colorodo, he stopped at a pay phone and called some of his officer friends at the Santa Cruz Police Department. He confessed to everything but no one would believe him, because he was friends with a lof of the people there, and they never imagined he could commit these crimes. After calling a few more times and confessing more details of the murders, the police decided to pay a visit to Edmund's mother's house. They quickly changed their minds and decided to go pick him up. Edmund simply sat calmly and waited for them to arrive.

Edmund made a full confession and took investigators to his various disposal sites. At his trial in 1973, Edmund pleaded insanity. At one point during his trial, he attempted to slash his wrists with a ball point pen, but obviously was unsuccessful. The jury found Edmund Kemper guilty of first degree murder on all eight accounts. When he was asked what punishment would fit the crimes he committed, he said "death by torture." Instead, he was sentenced to life in prison at the Vacaville Medical Facility in California. He is said to be a model prisoner there.
