Paddle To The Sea -- The Game

To Make:

Not being an artist in the least, I asked my then 17 year old son Dan to draw a sketch of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. There was a picture in the back of the book that he used as a guide. I think he did a nice job.

As you can see, I had him draw it on a manila file folder. Then I added the blue using a watercolor marker. (Note: permanent markers often will "bleed" over time when covered with Contact paper.) I used tiny white dots to create a path, following the journey that the little canoe takes in the book. The red dots indicate geographic places we learned about during our study of this book and region. Each dot has a number (for bodies of water) or letter (for cities).

The Cards:

The cards for this game consist of questions both from the story and from the additional research we did along with reading the book. Some of the cards call for the child to identify the bodies of water or the cities that we learned about and that are indicated by the red dots on the game-board map. I numbered each of the question cards so that the answers given, can be quickly checked with the numbered answer key.

To Play:

In turn, players draw a card. If they can correctly answer the question or identify the geographic spot, they can shake a die and move that many spaces along the path. Hoping to be the first player to reach the last space located in the Atlantic Ocean.
