Warning Signs
Warning Signs
There are at least 5 situations to indicate a storm may be strong enough to produce tornadoes, or there
is already a tornado approaching:
Large Hail A thunderstorm is severe when hail reaches 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Most tornadic
supercell thunderstorms can and do produce hail up to softball size.
Strong Winds Wind gusts to 58 mph is all that is needed to make conditions favorable for development
of tornadoes. When you hear a warning issued, and wind gusts to 60 mph can be expected, tornadoes
are possible.
Frequent, Intense Lightning The larger, and more severe a thunderstorm gets, the more lightning there
will be.
Rotating Bulge (wall cloud) If you see a storm approaching, and there is a bulge with a rotating motion
at the base of the cloud, (wall cloud) this could mean a tornado is imminent.
Loud Roar or Rumbling Like a jet too close to you, or a train in your kitchen. At this point, it is
imperative you go to the center part of your house or to the lowest level and take cover.
