Kermode bear

The Kermode Bear also known as the Spirit Bear or the Ghost Bear
by others, is a rare type of black bear on coastal islands of British Columbia.
The Kermode Bear is a sub-species of black bear that has a double recessive
gene making the bear white in color. Now this is normally a rare occurrence
but for reasons only explained in legend the Princess Royal Island and
surrounding area are blessed with a good amount of the famed Spirit Bear.
Seen as a reminder of the time when the land was covered with snow and
ice the Kermode Bear stands as a great figure among a beautiful land.
With a look in any direction that simply can take you breath away like
never before the Kermode Bear in my view was needed not to remind us
of the time of the glaciers but as a truly fitting complement to a wondrous land.

The Kermode Bear was named after Frances Kermode in the early 1900's.
First seen as a separate species of Bear it was later discovered that the
Kermode Bear was actually a sub-species of the Black Bear (common to North
America and Canada). What is odd about the Kermode Bear (besides the white
coat) is that they are only found on the Princess Royal Island. The
Tsimshian people know the bear as "Moksgmol" the spirit of the ancient
rainforest hence the name Spirit Bear or Ghost Bear. There legend is posted here.
