Comments: I am outraged over the senseless murder of Matt. I am ashamed to even think that the young people responsible for his brutal death are considered a part of humanity. For in my opinion they aren't human. My question to all of them is this: Who the hell appointed them GOD to sit in judgement of someone like Matt? They took the life of an innocent person out of their hate and ignorance, therefore, they should lose their life as well. Matt and all his friends and family are in my prayers. God Bless you all. Bon

Comments: Michael, though we never met, I know that you are wonderful young man. Your story has touched my soul, and I will always love you and your memory. I believe that, in some way, you know how you have united the community, both gay and straight, and that you, God and all the Saints see what is happening and say, "It is good." You have fought a good, you have finished the course, you have kept the faith Love from your brother in Christ and in the Community. Daryl

Comments: First my condolences to the loved ones of Matthew, may God watch over and be with you in the days to come. This is a gross injustice that has been done. Should we, as gay people, be treated as second class citizens? I speak only for myself, not all gay men and women, when I say that I too have an American Dream. A dream of someday finding the person with whom I choose to share my life and forming a union recognized by the government to whom I have pledged allegiance, been a loyal citizen and a taxpayer. A dream of someday applying to adopt a child and my sexuality not being an automatic reason for denial.A dream in which all people in this great land of ours are not judged by the color of their skin, their house of worship or lack there of, or the sex of their life partner. Some may say that this will never happen, but this is my dream and I do believe. Someday. Somehow.I hope that those of you close to Matthew will keep both his dreams and his memory alive. Without dreams and memories what are we?James H. Hill

Comments: In memory of Matthew Shepard,-you are safe now, but you should not have had to be taken away from us or from your life -to make you that way,- I am so very sorry!- Your light will always shine. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I just lost a very special member of my family, and to have a friend or family member or anyone taken away from their life and our lives is horrible, but it should never happen like this! Hate crimes should not happen, there is no reason for it. We can not control other people and the way they think or the way they judge us.-- I fear the world we live in! We need peace in this world. What is it going to take? We need to stand up for what we believe in so Matthew's soul can rest in peace, and so that we can prevent this from happening to anyone else! Comments: My heart sincerely goes out to Matthew's family and friends. This tragedy is truly a nightmare. A Plea: It is natural when a tragedy such as this occurs to feel sympathy. I wish that everyone who is genuinely moved by this will do "something". Get involved. Sign petitions, send letters to congress, anything! Let them know that The Hate Crime Prevention Act affects everyone, not just gays and lesbians. Act now before you, or anyone else gets hurt. Silence = Death.

He can live like he wants to,never to be tourmented again Matthew will be in our prays for a long tim. Not only will the law do what they have to but his killers will live with this until they die by human hands. As your beloved son did. But they haveto face our father in heaven. Comments: Matthew will always be remembered from the friends he had and the new ones he has now. Most people don't understand the gay lifestyle so they try to change it or get rid of the people. If one truely knew a gay person then one would understand that most live life to the fullest, so why isn't everyone else doing the same thing. Living Life to the Fullest and Just be Happy with yourself and everyone else. That is the way Matthew would probably wanted it. Matthew we will try to continue the spirit you had. Even though I didn't know you I will always remember you.

Comments: I was saddened, sickened, angered by this act of senseless violence, why oh why do people grow up thinking it is ok to commit such atrocities ?? Any religion that lends its name to bigotry and hatred is no religion, merely a refuge for the lowest of the low. It's time to stop the intolerance !!! For the sake of every soul on this planet, think before you turn a blind eye to intolerance, anywhere... My deepest and heartfelt sympathies are with the parents and family of Matthew.

Comments: Dear Matt and Family, It is ashame to see how much hate we have in this world. Though it is hard to imagine the horrible pain that you have endored, we all must try to be hatred free because otherwise we would be consumed with hatred living in this world, and be no better then those inhuman persons that comitted this horrific act. However I think they need to be in the prison "hole" for life, with no chance of ever seeing the beauty of the great outdoors again. I hope they never have any joyful privileges again in their entire life...unfortunately none of this will probably happen as our judicial system sometimes works against us,so all I can say is I'm sending hugs, love, and heart felt sympathy to you all, and my prayers are with Matthew. God Bless you all. Sincerely, Alonna

I talked with a friend og mine bout if the murders deserve deathpenalty, but the answer must be "NO" Cause if so THEN it would go against everything Matthew stands for..HUMANITY!!!!!. Let's watch the criminal suffer for life..thats a far more worster punishment than death. My thoughts are with u.

Comments: The tragedy of Matthew is made all the more real when you have friends and relatives who are gay. Losing any of them in such a horrifying way would be unimaginable. As a mom w/3 kids, I cannot even begin to imagine having one of them murdered because of the way they love another person. Jesus is crying because we as humans have not learned the one lesson that he felt was the most important - tolerance. Jesus died because of intolerance, isn't it sad that humanity has obviously not learned from that.

Here in sherbrooke last year, 3 men who brutaly beaten up a young girl and was found dead in a a field not far from my place, she was just walking home that night and they could not get what they wanted, so they killed her. I found that 2 or 3 guys beating up one person, to be lazy cowards. I guess revenge is not the answer. But a figure that GOD will take care of them. Comments: I teach high school in Florida at a school for the Severely Emotionally Disturbed. In my first period English class, the students have been wanting to read and follow the articles regarding Matthew (over reading from their books). In my last period class we had just finished a unit on gang violence about 2 weeks ago and started a unit on peer pressure. The kids want to talk more about hate crimes and issues related to that so I am developing a unit over the weekend so I can work it into my lesson. I think children should learn about tolerance before they enter the school system. I also know that not everyone should be a parent, yet they still bring children into the world all the same.

Comments: As a gay educator and community activist, deeply committed in both my work and my life to making this world a safer place for young people of all races, sexual natures, and abilities. I cannot understand how parents and communities can not only condone. but actively support hate crimes of any nature. Matthew, while the loss of your life is tragic and senseless, I believe that everything happens for a reason. In this case, the media attention surrounding your savage death, and the coverage to come of the trials of the cowards who perpetrated this atrocity will make a difference. Perhaps many people will see themselves for what they are -- bigotted, small-minded bullies who repulse the rest of the civilized world. If, in this tragedy, a lasting lesson ls learned, then Matthew, you will have given earned both a place in history, and your wings. May peace and love come to all who mourn your passing. May God bless you and keep you. May he make his light to shine upon you, and give you peace.

Comments: We in San diego and the rest of the world have felt the pain and suffering for far to long. Matthew has paid the dear price of the ignorance and hate of another and it's time we scream out in anger and get measures passed to protect such a hateful crime that affects the whole world. Although many of us never knew Matthew personally we all knew him in our hearts and feel the pain that his family is going through at this time. We need to pull together and put an end to this horror.

He also has AIDS and my worst fear is that he would die before myself and my husband. I am praying for the killers and all who can hate people that much. They must have such miserable lives. I wanted to know more about Matt yet with so much happening in the world today, every time I saw a snip on the news it was over in a flash. I have to beleive that TRULY our world is not the hateful dungeon that seems to be springing up all around us; the moat gets deeper; the walls get higher.yet I have got to keep in my mind that our world is only misguided, and that everyone is somewhat good in their hearts. I MUST BELEIVE THIS FOR MY OWN SANITYI am a gay man living in Dallas and I have been very lucky not to have have such harsh and final NEGATIVITY lashed upon me in my experiences. I have been able to overcome any obstacles that were thrown at me to this point and now I have one more person to think about when the next one comes my way...good luck and my hope to you Matt, wherever you are

Comments: My prayers go out to Matthew and his family. Not even the death of my own father has impacted me the way the way this has. I find myself filled with such pain and anger that I am overwhelmed. The idea that someone can be tortured and murdered for just being what he is, is not acceptable to me. What disburbs me the most is that I have let these people, the animals that did this and idiots like the Phelps gang, cause me to feel such rage that I would lower myself to their levels in wanting to see them, themselves face the same fate. I know there is a better way but right now I am to angry see it. Maybe Matt's death will teach us all a lesson.

When anyone dies of a hate crime or has gotten killed we all die a little at a time. So, come on maybe WE Gays and Lesbians can TEACH this country about tolerance for others NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE. I also fee like that we as gays and lesbians are a group that is an easy target. WE ARE NOT!!!!

What touches me the most about this is the fact that when I moved to California back in August 18, 1998, I drove through Laramie Wyoming with my pride sticker on the back of my 88 Honda Accord Hatchback with Wisconsin plates. They are all people too, just like us. their only crime is that they are different. But they are only different in such ways that may be bad to others. they are human and it is wrong to do such things to other humans. all i have to say to people who hate these "different" people, i that somewhere there are a group of people who think they are wrong in their beliefs and ways of life, what if someboy came along and did such horrible things to you? This whole thing sickens me immensely and i can only pray that these hate crimes will stop and people will stop and realize that we are all put on this earth in God's image.

Tears of sadness well in my eyes when I think of this tragedy. I, too, am a twenty-one year old college student. I have many gay friends and many straight friends. However, I have no friends that cannot tolorate and understand their fellow human beings. People who live with such great hate, especially the kind of hate that turns them into killers, will never know any kind of genuine happiness. For those poeple I can only hold tears of pity, not even those of sympathy. For sympathy would mean understanding. And I don't. I don't understand. God bless Michael's family and give them the straingth they need to endure. Michael may be gone from this world, but he will never be forgotten. The angels must have seen something special in Michael, I think we all can too.

Comments: As an american, I too am disgusted at the horrors we inflict on ourselves as a society!! It is a shame that a murder has to be committed before the legislature in all states pass Hate crime laws. I am thankful enough to live in a state that already has it on the books!!!

Comments: Now is the time to break the chains of habits that seek to bind us all. Once in junior high school I received one of those "class punishments" You know, where I am sure I was not guilty but because the class as a whole was I got it too. The penalty was to write this "The Chains of a habit are too weak to be felt until too strong to be broken. I never knew the author, only that it was to be written 700 times. " I am 42 now, have lived, never forgotten that line and have come to realize, more and more, its meaning. There are many who would turn their heads and be silent at this time. That always happens when people don't want to "confront the harsh reality of their inner selves." If these actions are allowed to go without sufficient and just attention the "chains of this habit" will grow stronger and.. who knows perhaps this period of growth would be the one that causes "this habit of ultra hatred to become too strong to be broken."

This is a very difficult time for all the gay community around the world. I think it's about time our government woke up and pulled their head out of their ass and provided better laws and stiffer penalties for hate crimes! Thank you again for the memorial... With Matt's death, i just hope something good comes from this. As bad as a tragedy as this is, I know Matthew is in a better place (Heaven). God bless you Matthew, your family and friends.

Comments: I am saddened and outraged by the death of Matthew Shepard. I lost my best friend 11 years ago due to a hate crime. We must demand that the laws be changed to protect us from hate crimes. We must also stop that lunatic “Rev.” Fred Phelps who along with his sick following, promote hatred towards gay people. We must “ACT UP - FIGHT BACK”. My deepest sympathy to the parents, family and friends of Matthew, my prayers and thoughts are with you. Rest In Peace Matthew.

No one should have to endure this merely because they love someone who happens to be the same gender. Eventually, this country and the world will come to realize that ALL life is precious and ALL love is as well.

Comments: 161098/1:30PM. I am here in your memorial WEB. Since monday I share every day with you and your people. I don't know why your death impacted me this way. Tears come down over my face when I am writing this to the guestbook. Maybe I think in my 12 years old child. You move me to accept whatever he likes to be. I am married, one girl in my whole life, yes because I am homosexual. Past experience bind me to accept heterosexuality. In don't know who you are but today listening to he music at your memorial web, I know why I am so sad, so alone: cultural pression, rejection, stigmatization, abuse, murder = Homosexual world? You taught us to fight...you are dead but for ever you are going to be in our minds. To all who may read this sincere and humility words come from my heart, please protect yourself in all the senses. I have HIV(child & wife HIV-) I don't need to explain. May God forgiveme for not having the guts to go agead. I am here waiting the day to share with you there where you are. Matt, family & friends I share what I feel in this sour moment. Matt rest in peace for ever...i see you some day til then, Dan :-x

Comments: We had an incident similar to this in our schools. Luckily it did not go quite that far. He wasn't beaten, but other horrible and humiliating things were done to him. I myself am not gay. No matter who this crime would have been against it was wrong. It is sad to see that someone was wiped off the face of this earth out of stupidity. I can't believe anyone would do such a horrible thing to anyone because of race, creed, color, religion, or sexual preference. I say to each his own. It scares me to know that people exist in this world that could commit such heineous acts. The sick people who commited this crime should be punished by whatever means the law sees fit. They hadn't better let them go free or give them a slap on the wrist either. I don't want those people loose and running around in anyone's neighborhood, left to commit another such crime. To Matthew's family...my thoughts are with you.

No one deserves to go like that, and I only hope, that he finds the peace in death that our fellow human beings would not allow him in life. my condolances to his family, but death is not my first choice of his murderers, it's too quick and easy for them, they did not give mathew that luxury. god bless.

Comments: My heart is aching. Why? Poor blessed one, I can only tolerate this by praying, by believing that his angels took him out, before it got too horrible. If anything good can come from this, maybe it's that now people, who never really considered the hate against gays, or just assumed that everything was ok these days, will really be forced to see how it really is. I think prejudice and hate is allowed to live on because so many people are just indifferent. They don't hate, or they don't love us, but they just figured everythings ok. But it's not. We all have to stand up and fight so that every person has a fair chance in life. A fair chance to live like everyone else. I know God has taken Matthew into his arms and healed his wounds.

Comments: Over one hundred years ago Abraham Lincoln said that those who desire not freedom for others deserve it not for themselves. And in this century, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, in the course of two great global conflicts, enumerated freedoms they believed to be inalienable to all humankind, including freedom from unreasonable fears. Much work remains to be done, sadly, to realize the sentiments and intents expressed in their noble and inspiring words. There are many heroes and saints among us, and now, sadly, young Matthew joins the hallowed ranks of those who lived in ways that inspire us but who are no longer among us to offer their examples. It remains to those of us who still live in this life to complete the travel toward freedom and dignity for all, that they set us on course toward. A blessing on all who have fallen along the way, and on all who love those no longer among us. And for those of us who remain behind in this world to complete the Great Work of humanity, may we all go from strength to strength. We veterans of military service on freedom's behalf understand and honor the sacrifice of many others, knowing that there are many patriots who serve the cause of freedom, in uniform and out. Their lives and their courage give us strength to go on. We are deeply grateful and dedicated to complete the work ahead, no matter the cost, for the cost of living in fear without freeedom will always be too high to bear in silence. With great love and sadness, Gene F. Barfield, human rights activist and former National President, Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Veterans of America

Comments: I think that this site pretty much gets the point across. People that do that sort of thing to other people shouldn't deserve to live. Is it human for someone to kill another of his own kind just because he is different than he is? I don't think that this is fair at all. People should learn to live with people's differences no matter the size or shape of that difference. We are all one people and if we can't learn to get along and make peace in our lives, then what hope is there for us in the future?

Comments: Bless you for your efforts. Perhaps if the world had a few more like you and I, there would be fewer of those who would do such a thing to a sweet, gentle person such as Matthew. This whole horrible event has brought home to me just how very far we must yet travel and how very important the struggle is. We must take care to not fall victim to the same blind rage ourselves, as that which claimed those who took Matthew's life. No,...if this battle is EVER to be won, it must be done with vigilance, unity of purpose, and most importantly,...with love. Hate only begets hate. The one shining truth and comfort is that love and the undeniable human spirit WILL overcome this darkness. God speed us to that day on wings of angels.

Comments: Matthew sounds to have been a great role model for all of us. He may have done more for mankind in his short 21 years than most people do in their natural lifetime. Hopefully he will not have died in vain. For if this leads to the states having stronger hate crime laws, then Matthew will have attained his life goal. That is to have made one persons life better, if this happens, he will have made thousands of peoples lives better. And I suspect that his death has already changed many people for the better. Comments: I think that what happened to Matthew is the worst tragedy imaginable. Because he chose to be himself, he died. Those kids that did this have no regards for the precious gift of human life. They may continue to live but they did not give Matthew that choice. Hopefully from this tragedy will come an awareness of the American and international public of the diversity of this planet. How boring would it be if everyone was the same? Let every individual be just that; INDIVIDUAL. Without the unity there will be no more...

Comments: My heart is sickened and saddened by this atrocity. Only God knows what He had in mind when He created this misbegotten creature called man. It was His absolute worst creation. For everything man touches, he destroys. He seeks out new things, everyday, to conquer and destroy. Every problem on this planet comes by man's ill-equipped hands, to handle God's incredible creations. And then he laments mankind. How dare he say such. There is nothing kind about him. Everything beautifully different, on the planet will 99.9% of the time be fucked up by man. MAN'S LATEST VICTIM, MATHEW SHEPARD. I AM SO SORRY THIS HAPPENED AND CANNOT CONTAIN MY TEARS AS I CONCLUDE THIS MESSSAGE. I AM PRAYING FOR THIS SICK WORLD. (((LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME)))

Comments: I'm very very sorry about your loss. Some people just do not know how it affects others or their own lives when they take another. I hope they find it in ther hearts, if they have any to ask for Matthew's parents forgivness, and God's. For He is the one who will mete out their ultimate punishment. I do not believe in capitol punishment because that is just too easy on some people, however, these children do need to be taught some sort of lesson. I hope the judge has the wisdom to give them the punishment they deserve and wish Matthew's family and friends the courage to remember Matthew as he would want to be remembered and go on with thier lives the way he would have wanted. My prayers are with them. Good Luck to you.
