Comments: until people are educated to the fact that not all people are the same crimes like this will always happen--if we raise our children to hate and fear those who are not the norm we dont stand a chance to survive as a human race--god is for all people not just a chosen few--peace to matt shepard and hisfamily may they find comfort in those who really care--kevin sieg

Comments: I was so sad to learn of this dreadful crime. It made the news "down under". My thoughts are with Matt's family and friends at this time. I hope this spurs the Govt. to pass the Hate Crime legislation...and that those responsible forfeit their lives...as they surely do not deserve to live to perhaps carry out this heinous crime against some other poor soul. Comments: My prayers are with the family and friends of Matthew. This world will never be whole unless we accept ppl for who they are. No matter what. Let us love one another and know that everyone in this world should be accepted for who they are as a human being. Not for what they do or chose to do with thier lives.

Comments: I'm am so saddened and disturbed by this hideous crime. As a bisexual woman, I understand the concerns, frustration and compassion of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. I saw 20/20 last night with Matthew's story. The same pictures that were on this webpage were on the tv. Those Homophobic Bastards and their girlfriends DESERVE the Death Penalty and meet their Maker. My sincerest regrets to Matthew's family and friends. They are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing this with the world. I support the trial as well as their conviction to death. Christine J. Long

Comments: I cried for Matthew & his untimely death. It causes me great pain when life is taken so senselessly - I too have been bashed & tormented because of my sexual preference, but I thank God that I have survived. Like Matthew I also believe in the equality of humanity - but unfortunately there will always be an element of society that does not understand that being gay is NOT a choice & they choose to hate us because they believe we are a threat to 'normal' society. The worst culprits are those so-called Christians that promote intolerance towards these 'abominations' of mankind. My heartfelt condolences to Matthew's family & friends - it a loss to the whole world when the lives of gentle, caring people are taken, especially in such circumstances.

Comments: I think this is an awful thing that has happened to one of Gods children. No one has the right to take the life of another, no matter who they are. My son is gay and I love him as much now as I did before I learned that he was gay. Everyone is intitled their own choices in life. I can't begin to know how you must be feeling in your time of sorrow. My prayers are with you and yours. I will pray for you.

I find it so hard to believe that there are people among us who are so ignorant that they feel they have to kill others just because they don't like they way they live..I truly feel sorry for them, they are to be pitied for being so ignorant.

They did the crime and I honestly hope that they will do the time. Is death too good for them? Let them suffer at the hands of other prisoners in prison, and believe me, they will..:-) Janet....

Comments: As a gay man, just about to turn 60, I find more sadness in my life. I had thought most of the fight for our life style was just about done. How wrong I am. It is just beginning. Just to have equal rights with all others is all I ask for. May God hold Matthew in the palm of His hand and send us blessings. I hope his family finds comfort in all the messages sent. Matthew was not alone in his life style. "HATE" is not a family value, but there are those who think it is. May God have mercy on them.

Comments: my heartfelt condolensces to the Shepard family. i wish i had a family such as yours. matthew was a very lucky young man. i only hope all gay people, not only in the U.S., but around the world, see this as a much needed wake up call. the more we sit back and say nothing when things like this happen, the longer we will view society from the outside. please, share your love of matthew with everyone and anyone who will listen. his death will not be in vain. he is a tragic hero and his memory will long live in the hearts of gay people, and friends and relatives of gay people for eternity.

Comments: I just wanted to let the world know that even though this was a hte crime, this could have happened to anyone, gay or straight. I am a gay man and am thankful every day that I have friends that care for me no matter what. My family is coming to terms with it but it will take them time just as it took me and my friends time to deal with it. Matthew, though I never met him or heard of him until this awful thing happened, is a true soul, lived his life out in the open and seemed never to turn back. One day I hope to be the same and for Matthew I thank him wholeheartedly for being a beacon of light in my heart. So all who read this, please understand that no matter what makes you "out of the norm" you are still a human being. I hope all parents and friends of lesbians and gays take into account this awful event and not let another day go by without telling your gay or lesbian, son, daughter, father, mother, or any other friend or relative that you love them unconditionally and will be there to support them no matter what the cost.

May prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends. May you finally be able to rest in the knowledge that your sons killers may get the punishment they deserve.... DEATH... An Eye For An Eye.

Comments: Foremost my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and all who knew Matt. What a remarkable young man, and a stellar example of compassion, spirit and love of LIFE for all of us to aspire to. His memory will live on as he walks now into the loving healing arms of our Creator. The young tortured perpetrators of this heinous crime will surely reap the "justice" they deserve. While I am not their judge, I am deeply effected by their unspeakable action. It is a worthy goal of us all to feel our anger but not diminish the legacy of Matt by allowing it to deflect our hope for the day when ALL the Creator's children will live free of fear and brutality simply because of who they are.

Comments: I pray to God that the monsters that committed this hiddeous crime not be given life in prison.....but be executed by the slowest most painful death imaginable Why should they live? Matthew didnt...he didnt deserve what these scum sucking degenerates did to him...why should they be allowed to live? they dont deserve the right to live in the same airspace as you or I....THEY ARE MURDERERS!!!!!!! No one that can take a life deserves anything less than death....life is a gift from God.....and we should not have to pay to keep these demons alive in prison for the rest of their lives.....Matthew didnt have a chance to even fight back with two on one.....I hope they burn in Hell for eternity....You may think of me as being bitter and you are right....ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!!!! As a gay man I still cannot believe the stupidity of the human race as a whole......wake up people we are not going away!! We were born this way...I fought it all my life because that is what my parents wanted..I have known since I was born that this was the path I was to take.....its not been easy but I dont know anyone that has had it easy in either life style..ours is just a little bit more difficult to be accepted and understood......I didnt even know Mat... just from the news about him and I cried...and my prayers go out to his family and friends.......I know he was loved here on earth.....but now he is in the arms of our Father.....no more harm will come to Mat.

Comments: First and foremost my prayers and love go out to all who knew and have been touched by knowing Matthew. I know your pain. May God bless you. But I have to comment, and I know I'm in the minority here, that if we are to learn from Matthew we must do as his family says he would want us to do...and that is love ALL of humanity. That includes those who were the cause of his death. This is an extremely hard lesson for us with compassionate hearts. But remember, just because their acts were inhumane, incomprehensible in fact, doesn't mean they're no longer human. It seems to me that for someone lash out like those two boys did would take a lack of love in their lives. The only humane thing to do is send our prayers and love out to them as well. It is not our place as humans to judge them, rather it is to love all unconditionally. Should they go without taking responsibility for their actions? Absolutely not! But to wish death on them would seem to me the same as they did to Matthew. If we believe in God, let us trust He will make the necessary judgement. Let us live our lives as He would want us to...loving all unconditionally. It's a hard lesson to learn. So's trusting in God. But if we all put our minds to it, the world we live in will be that much closer to God. And when we're closer to God, we'll no longer have to endure the pain we do now...nor will we wish it on anyone else. Peace and unconditional love to you all!

Comments: I was sorry to hear about matthew's death and the way it came about. I and many of my online friends have heard about Reverend Phelps wanting to picket Matthew's funeral and we all think it is appalling that someone who claims to be a man of God would do such a thing. We have seen his website and think it is disgusting and many of us have written to him telling him how we feel. I am including my letter which happens to be a lot nicer than some I have seen. We are hoping that maybe someone will open his eyes see the wrong he is doing, but I doubt anything will affect a man like that. Here is my letter:

Subject: my 2 cents
Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 07:59:44 PDT

I am writing to comment about your website. I think you need to get with the times, this is 1998. The year 2000 is right around the corner and you are acting as if times haven't changed since Jesus himself roamed the Earth. You are going around condemning and persecuting innocent people just for being different than yourself. It makes you no better than those who put Jesus on the cross for being different. I think it's very ironic that man has come so far in technology but yet we cannot even figure out how to live amongst each other in peace and harmony. You call yourself a man of God yet you do the exact opposite of what God would want you to do. Why? Are you possibly jealous that this boy, Matthew Shepard, might have loved God even more than yourself? Is that why you are doing this? I, as a gay man, can show you how to love everyone and that is what God wants all of us to do, yet you would try to stop me from showing that love because I am different than you. i think you need to take a good look in the mirror and see what your real reflection shows about yourself. Take care and have a nice day.

The only gift is that since he was such a noble person, he will have reaped all the benefits of that life in the one beyond. And to those who would do such a thing, I think they will enevitibly recieve the same, albeit not as postively. Mal

Fortunately, I have not to this day been the victim of physical violence because of my sexual preference. I have also been lucky enough to have supportive family and friends. I hope that the human race will one day overcome this hatred of what is not "normal". Things like this just shouldn't happen. Comments: May God bless Mathew and his family. This is a crime of ignorance, not hate. By so labeling, we acknowledge our society's problem: we have not taught ourselves to love as God wants us to, our goal must be to wipe out this ignorance. There are those who would stand behind a crime of hate, not many would stand behind a crime of ignorance.

Comments: My bowling league passed around a sympathy card and took up a collection for Matthew's parents. I though that was a very nice gesture. Strange how the death of someone you never knew can hit you so hard. Let's hope something good will come of this and people will quit hating each other because they are a little different or don't believe in the same things.

I really cant find the words to express how i feel..... such is the depth to which this has shaken my faith in the human race. I pray that those he leaves behind will find strength in the memories of the one we have lost, and that the whole human race will learn from this senseless slaughter

He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. And may God help everyone who follows in his footsteps and guide those, who would do such wrong like this, to the light of forgiveness.

Obviously this boy was intelligent, open minded, and caring. WHY WE HE HURT BECAUSE OF THESE TRAITS?? I hate facing reality. The people that are on trial for this crime should get death and nothing less. My deepest sympathies go out to Matthew's family and friends. I wish I could've known you Matthew. God bless you.

Comments: I would just like to take this oportunity to express my deepest sympathy to the Family of Matthew. I to am gay and find it very hard to understand how anyone could be as heartless and cold as these so called people. Maybe it is just the anger in me now speaking, but this is one time where I would like to see Corporal Punishment initiated. And then perhaps these people should spend the rest of their lives in prison to rot away like the scum they are. I do hope that what I am saying here doesn't upset family members of Matthew in any way, shape or form, as I know that what you are going through at this time is hard enough to understand and contemplate. You will all be in my prayers, and so will Matthew. Once again My deepest sympathy to the family of Matthew. Danny Perry

This is so sad that the only reason Matthew had to die was because he was gay. I wish I could be more confident in our justice system but I can't. The only justice for these people are for them to endure the same pain Matthew did and we all know that will not happen. Criminals have civil rights and that would be considered inhumane treatment.............makes you sick doesn't it?

Things similar to this I hate and am totally against are 1)Parents that beat their children. If they are not going to care for their children, then what is the point of having them in the first place! 2) Boyfriends/Husbands that beat up and rape their wives, girlfriends etc (visa versa), I respect women for who they are, and respect their feelings, as they are human beings and deserve respect. Well I don't have much more to say, except I hope those guys get executed, they don't deserve to live, they to that guys life, they don't deserve their's!! Bye for now Ian White

Those people who dont understand that should be sent to Cuba or maybe to China (before human rights) and all their freedom should be taken away so they can not mis-use it beating human beings who are soooooooo right. Freedom has some responsabilities and the biggest one is honoring and respecting other people's rights.

I hope someday we can stop the hate, the prejudice and the violence against people who are different. Maybe Matthew's life and death will be the spark that lights the way to that. Thank you again.

I hope there is a way that we can make sure that his murders are put away for life or to be leagleally put away Again i am truly s0rry for your loss. God Bless You all and hope you can find some comfort in him to heal your breaking hearts

I felt a loss and I didn't even know Matthew, I know that had he still been here today he would have been some one I would have loved to have met. Someone my age someone to talk to and someone to look up to even though he may not have been the most popular or the best soprts person he would have been the BEST freined. I hope that his death will make a difference and people will change because of it. My prayers are with Mr & Mrs Shepard and the rest of Matthews family. Shane Irons

I lived there for 15 years and I never thought that I would been embarassed to say that I once lived there. I hope that Matthew's family find comfort in the fact that not everyone in the state or in this country feel the way that the hate mongers who killed their beloved son do. My prayers are with the family and with Matthew's soul.

Matthew wasn't even given a chance, it brings tears to my eyes that people could be so hateful. unfair, and just simple disgusting. Why did they have to take a talented young life away from the world, he could have contributed more than they ever could have. Shall they receive no sympathy what so ever, for causing such a disaster in this young, bright, and talented guys family. He shall rest in peace now and have no worries about such disgraceful people anymore. God bless you Matthew!!!

Matthew has touched my life, and many others...and he will live on through us. I support the maximum penalty for this crime. The defendants MUST be held accountable for their actions. Nothing less can be acceptable. The anti-gay groups and others that argue this must live by their own dogma which says "an eye for an eye." I, and all of my friends and family, never knew Matthew. I cannot speak for them, but no other stranger is closer to my heart.

MATTHEW GAVE HIS PART OF LOVE AND OF HIS DESTINY TO SOMETHING THAT WAS CREATED BY HATRED AND MERCYLESS LOVE. SOMEONE THAT PURPOSEFULLY TOOK ALL THAT HE HAD AWAY TO PUT IN A WORLD OF EVERLASTING LOVE, A LOVE OF TRUTH, A LOVE FOR HIS DESTINY.... TO MATTHEW: I NEVER KNEW YOU. BUT MY LITTLE FRIEND, YOU NOW HAVE YOUR DESTINY, AND YOUR LOVE, TO BE THE ONES THAT YOU LOVED, GUARDIAN ANGEL.. THEIR EVERLASTING LOVE.. THIS TERRIBLE CRIME IS USELESS.... MY PRAYER IS FOR THE MURDERERS TO SPEND AN ETERNAL LIFE OF MERCYLESS LOVE, TO HAVE THEIR DESTINY STRIPPED RIGHT FROM THEIR SOULS. FOR THE 4 MURDERERS TO LOSE ALL THE LOVE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN ENTENDED FOR THEM. TO SPEND THE REST OF THEIR YOUNG LIVES IN PERSONAL TORMENT. AND MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOULS.

I never knew Matthew, never even heard of him until that horrible day...But for some reason I feel deeply sorrowed.Almost like he was one of my best friends. Comments: Many people have speculated at the cause of the brutal crime that was committed. One of the more popular rumours is that one of the assailants made a pass at Matthew and he turned him down. Then fearing being "outed" he recruited his friend in a robbery. He kater claimed that he hit on him in order to make Matthew trust him prior to the robbery. It is my opinion that the man was so scared of finally having others know who he is. I don't want him to die. It's not that he doesn't deserve it, but I hope he becomes a prison inmates "bitch". I want him to realize what it is like to be totally dominated in every way. Humiliated . . . just because! Taking advantage of others just to feel superior. Well, they'll be judged by God one day . . . and I hope the only wings they get are loners so they can fly "straight" to hell! No one deserves that kind of abuse - straight, bisexual, gay, black, whatever! The idea that such evil . . . such self-loathing could live inside any man escapes me. I'm sick just trying to imagine it. At least Matthew's in a better place now. He can rest knowing that he has raised society's awareness. Let's hope it lasts and that Matthew's message lives on. Rest in peace, Matthew.

I am not a supporter of the death penalty and do not believe that any justice will be served from killing these two young men but life in prison is definetly in order.as a bi sexual man myself who has three children i know that i will instill in my children the love of all people and i hope more people can learn from this tragedy and do the same. god bless the Shepard familly.

Comments: I feel so bad for the friends and family of Matthew. I hope this event changes the minds of a few people with the courage to change the future, specifically parents... A person died not because he was evil, or bad or for any reason except for the morals of two men, who knew no better than to take this young mans life because they believed him to be no better than disposable. I hope that in their hearts and in the minds that someday they feel the remorse that they should feel, because their judgement is coming not only in court but also in heaven. I hope we can all move to a society that does not condemn the killing of someone for RACE, RELIGION, NATIONALITY or SEXUAL PREFERENCE. I send my thoughts, to the family and the friends of Matthew and hope that someday the pain they are feeling subsides and all they remember is the LOVE of this young man stricken down by ignorance. Matthew, you will live on in all of us, as we all mourn your passing and most untimely death. GOD BLESS

Comments: I feel disgusted by the atrocities that Matthew went through. Although I did not know him, I did read the biography on the web page, and the world is a much sadder place without him. He had a light that apparantly shone through, and that lighted up a room. My hope is that Matthew's life and death brings to the surface the real issues that gays and lesbians face. My heart and soul goes out to the family and friends of Matthew Shepherd. I cannnot begin to imagine what they must be going through. Sincerely, Steve O'Neil

I can not begin to imagine the pain, but know that Matt is in a place where he is loved no matter what he believes...and may the mighty God have mercy on the souls of the attackers, and may he give light to the lives of the family and friends.

Comments: The death of Matthew Shepard has indeed touched the hearts of all who have heard about it. It is saddening, sickening, and extremely disheartening that such acts of brutal violence are present in our society today. Why can't we all just put our differences behind us and see each other for who we really are? I didn't know Matthew until all of this came about, but I assure you, my heart goes out to his family, friends, and all who knew him. Rest in peace, Matt.....

I burn a candle for Matthew. A good looking guy. "I wish i could've known you but you were miles away, your candle burned out long before, you legend's here to stay" Rest now, little Matthew, never again will you hear the cruel words that utter from ignorant people's mouths, Rest for you are with the LORD. I was shot in the back, and left for dead, because i am gay. I survived, and now will live the rest of my life in a wheelchair. The purpetrator was never caught. Thank GOD, they caught the people responsible for this. May they burn in hell. My prayers are with the family and friends of Matthew.

Comments: I just wanted to say that even though I am not a religious person I send my prayers (love) to each and every friend and faimly member of Matthews. Thoes people will get their punishment in some way at some time, but that does not solve the problem. We all need to be more open minded even though at times it may be hard. Things like this are really hard for me because my ex-boyfriend came out and said he was gay and it hurts because I still love him and I don't see how people can be so cruel. No not only does he fear for what life might hold in store for him, but so do I. Be Strong

Comments: Why did something like this have to happen to someone so good, so full of promise? It's frightening that an ordinance here in Cincinnati (Issue 3) was upheld just yesterday, by the supposed Supreme Court of the United States, that allows crimes like this to go unpunished in Cincinnati. Instead, even in light of Matthew's death...the ignorance and the hatred go on, and our city continues to turn a deaf ear to the injustices done. I am ashamed to live in a city of such intolerance. Rest in peace Matthew....
