This is a play I wrote for a patriotic kindergarten program.
It is written with a narrator and small groups of children stepping forward (3-4 at a time).

Adult Narrator - Our flag and what it stands for has inspired many people to do great things. Let’s listen as our kindergarten class discusses our flag and what it represents past and present.

O Flag of our Union
Child 1 - O flag of our Union, To you we'll be true,
Child 2 - To your red and white stripes, And your stars on the blue;
Child 3 - The emblem of freedom, The symbol of right,
Child 4 - We children salute you, O flag fair and bright!

Adult Narrator - If it was not for the determination of the Pilgrims, we would not have a country.

Indian 1 – Are you ready for dinner? I brought corn for us to enjoy.

Indian 2 – I have fish to add to our dinner.

Indian 3 – How about some wild turkey? I just caught it this morning.

Pilgrim 1 – We are very thankful you have helped us. Without your help, we could have starved to death.

Pilgrim 2 – You have taught us so much. We did not know how to catch fish or capture a wild turkey.

Pilgrim 3 – God has really been good to us. We came to America so we can worship our God in peace. We hope you will come to know our God.

Adult Narrator - As time went on our great nation began to form. Needing a symbol for our country, George Washington, George Ross and Robert Morris met at the home of Betsy Ross who had already had one husband die in the war and would soon lose another one.

George Washington – We need our own flag to show that we are separated from Britain. Can you sew it for us?
Betsy Ross – I don’t know but I will try.
George Ross – We would like it to be red, white and blue.
Robert Morris – and have 13 stripes - one for each of the colonies and a star for each state.
Betsy Ross – I will get started right away.

Song – sung to the tune of thumbkin
What is red
What is blue
What is white
What is white
What has 50 stars
What has 13 stripes
It’s our Flag
It’s our Flag

Adult Narrator - During the war of 1812 Francis Scott Key, Colonel John Stuart Skinner and Doctor William Beanes, while being detained by the British, watched the attack on Fort McHenry.

You can play a tape of bombs going off for a few seconds if you wish. After it stops…

Francis Scott Key – (Looking through a telescope or squinting with hand over eyes)
I can’t see anything, has the fort been captured? Dr. Beanes – LOOK! There is our Flag. The biggest flag I have ever seen!
Colonel John Stuart Skinner – Yes, I see it too. It is over the fort. It has not been captured.
Francis Scott Key – (take an envelope out of pocket and start writing)

Child 5 – (holding paper) have you seen this poem Francis Scott Key wrote?
Child 6 – Yes it is beautiful. We should put it to music.
Child 7 – I know just the music it needs.

Play the National Anthem

Adult Narrator - As time went on many men and women fought to keep our country free. Men and women are still fighting today. As our flag flew over Fort McHenry and many other battle grounds. It was flying over a building another fateful day.

child – Did you hear what happened September 11th?
child – Yes, isn’t it terrible?
Child – Those people that died are heroes. Just like the people that die in wars fighting for our country.
child – We are going to win this battle!
All together - Our Flag is Still Flying!
