From a newspaper clipping 1973

“Brooke County Historical Facts”.

Absalom Wells was 9 years of age when he accompanied his brother Charles to our area. His home was at the mouth of Buffalo Creek, but he had other farms as well.

His will names his home place, the farm at Short Creek, 100 acres on the Ohio River, a tract at Beech Bottom where Duval lived and a tract where Lazear lived. He provided for each of his fourteen children when they came of age or married, but one daughter was not married and he made special provisions for her in his will.

Like his brother he was interested in current issues, but he was not a politician.

There were other Wells men in Brooke county - Benjamin, who settled on the hill back of Buffalo Creek; Charles Wells, the older who was killed by the Indians; Bazaleel Wells, brother of Alexander, who founded the City of Steubenville, Ohio; Francis Wells, who was the son of Thomas Wells and many other members of this family; too numerous to mention.
