JOBLESS SPICE

BEAT Magazine

Wednesday 25 August 1998

The BBC last week ran a special looking at Geri Halliwell's job options afterspice Girls. Film maker Michael Winner dismissed her as an actress, ("as near nil as you could possibly get") with no allure or believability. Chat show queen Esther Rantzen, though, reckons Jobless Spice could cut it in her gig, bleating ''she's got star quality" although an early showreel of Geri interviewing people in the street showed "she's very in-your- face but she's not actually listening to anybody else." Ginger's been linked to TV shows but publicists are keeping mum about her plans. Meantime, pop singer Louise denies she tried to get Geri's job. The singer, who left all-giri band Eternal, told dj Simon Mayo, "I really enjoy what the girls do but I enjoy being a solo artist." But Spices' publicist says different. "She is friends by the girls and it certainly hasn't been denied by the girls that she wanted to join. But I honestly don't know whether it was a simple conversation or a formal a pproach." Will there be a Spice Girls left? Victoria 'Posh' Adams will take time off when she has a baby with petulant footballer David Beckham in February, with gamblers placing more bets (date of birth, if it will sing on a Spice record, if it plays football etc) than any other baby outside the Royal Family. On the weekend, it was reported that Met B (Scary) and fiance Jimmy Guizar are also expecting.

*** Ex-Spice Girl to auction glitzy costumes

LONDON (Reuters) - "Ginger Spice" Geri Halliwell, the former Spice Girl, is selling the extravagant stage costumes she wore as a singer in the pop group. The clothes top the bill at Sotheby's "Rock n' Roll memorabilia" sale September 16, which also includes Halliwell's music awards and a swanky sports car, the British auctioneers said Thursday. Among the costumes is an eye-catching "Union Jack" dress worn for the 1997 Brit Awards in London, which is expected to fetch up to 12,000 pounds (US$19,800), Sotheby's said. Halliwell split from the Spice Girls to pursue a solo career. She was credited with being the driving force behind the band

SCARY SPICE IS GOING UNDERGROUNG

Spice Girl Mel B is having an underground tunnel built to link her luxurious mansion to a leisure complex in the grounds of her home.

Scary Spice is having a garage block converted into a £250,000 complex with a 12-metre swimming pool, hot tub, hydro spa, sauna, gym and bar.

But mum-to-be Mel, 23, doesn't want to brave the elements on cold days and has applied for planning permission to build the underground tunnel from her £2.25 million home in Little Marlow, Bucks.

The 33-yard tunnel will even have spiral staircases at each end, The Sun reported. Going undercover is nothing new for the Spice Girl.

When she married dancer Jimmy Gulzar, 31, a white canvas 'tunnel' was put up between the couple's home and St John The Baptist church next door.

GERI HALLIWELL took her pals, GEORGE MICHAEL, and his boyfriend KENNY GOSS, out to lunch at the mega-expensive celebrity hangout The Ivy in LA recently. But as they leave the swanky restaurant, it seems Kenny wants to fix her up for the bill. 'Listen 'ere,' Geri insists. 'I know I've just quit my job, but it's my treat!' Geri and George - brought closer by recent 'adversities' - have been spending a lot of time together, comtemplating their futures and what's left of their careers.
