___________________________ MILLENNIUM REVIEW _________________________ I love the whole album... could it have something to do with my being an avid fan?? Perhaps... but this is what happens when I dissect Millennium...
LARGER THAN LIFE - I love this song, except for the strange part at the beginning. You know, when the Joker makes a special appearance and lends BSB his crazy laugh? Oh hang on, that was AJ. Nevermind. Is it just me or is he getting crazier??? I love the guitar as it adds a harder edge to their usual pop tunes. Brian went a little overboard on the "yai- yai- yai- yai- yai- yai- yai- yai-yai- ..." though. It sounded comedic. Nevertheless, it's a great dance tune.
I WANT IT THAT WAY - I love the guitar opening. I love the verses. I love the chorus. I especially love Howie's part [damn, does he look hot in that video!]. The whole song is just wonderful ... but... what does it really mean? The only other aspect that I dislike about this song is that it's so low it's hard to sing along to.
SHOW ME THE MEANING OF BEING LONELY - The song just screams anguish. You can almost hear the sad cries in the background. And Kevin gets to sing [whoah!]. The words are deeper than usual and their harmonies blend wholly. Notice how they gave the bridge to Howie again [like in IWITW]?? That's my favorite part though... "There's nowhere to run, I have no place to go... surrender my heart, body and soul..." Yes Howie... I surrender...
IT'S GOTTA BE YOU - "Uh-huh, uh-huh!" Very danceable... In a small way it reminds me of N Sync's "I Want You Back" which in turn sounded like "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." There is that slow-the-music-have-louder-singing bridge again. "Whoo-whoo!"
I NEED YOU TONIGHT - I got much love for Nick and yeah, he's been singing this song on tour forever... but.. but... his voice is painful to listen to at times. Granted that he does sound like a man now, but why does he have to sing it with so much emotion?? His voice ends up sounding scratchy and whiny. I do like the soft "aaahhh" in the background though. And why the hell did they change the title???? What was soooo wrong with "Heaven In Your Eyes"?????
DON'T WANT YOU BACK - Apart from Kevin's corny "don- don't want you back" voice thing, the song rocks. Even though they're indignant in the song they are still apologetic... "Forgive my honesty, but you gotta go." And that piano bridge.... niiice [even though at the beginning, it sounds like Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine."]. And Nick sounds constipated a few times with his "ehh ehh" part. All in all, this song is awesome and is easy to sing along with. Gets you in the mood to break up with someone, anyone.
DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU NOW - is hard to distinguish from their other mid-tempo songs if you don't know the lyrics. It has the same beat as "As Long As You Love Me" [Britney Spears' "Sometimes" sounds eerily like that song too]. Easy to sing along to. All in all, I give it a 7.
THE ONE - Anyone else reminded of the theme song to "The Neverending Story"? This song is critic-proof. It sounds so perfected. Great beat, danceable and singable. "I'll be the one who will make all your sorrows undone..." I heard something that deeply disturbed me... the exact same beat and tune to The One yet, seemingly, the only difference if that he's not "the one" but "your superhero." Scaaaary. Maybe the singers are related to Lou...
BACK TO YOUR HEART - The lyrics are awesome. They should've used a real piano though instead of a synthesizer... it would've sounded less pop-sy. And maybe they should've kept the tempo like the beginning instead of speeding it up a tad bit - it ended up sounding country-ish. And why oh why does Kevin not get a solo in the song he wrote????? But ignore my complaints... I love this song. So much so that I have it on repeat right now.
SPANISH EYES - This song is simple yet may be a little confusing. Why do they just sing about "Spanish Eyes"? What about Asian eyes? Caucasian eyes? African-American eyes? And when they sing "I'm about to win first prize" - um.. pardon my ignorance... is he talking about love or a home run? Despite what I just said, I actually like this song very much. The Spanish guitars add an exotic touch. And *whoo-hoo* Howie got to sing the first verse.
NO ONE ELSE COMES CLOSE - the remake of Joe's classic... I happen to think it sounds better than the original. Whoever said that sequels don't compare to the original was lying... that or they weren't talking about the Backstreet Boys. This song is really... really r&b-ish and can really really get a girl in the mood. *wink*
THE PERFECT FAN - not quite as emotional as other "dear mama" songs out there, but great nonetheless. This song began off as my least favorite song but it's definitely grown on me. It makes use of all the guy's voices [well, except Nick, but he had a whole song to himself in "I Need You Tonight" anyway so... bleh.], and the choir in the background is just awesome. It's got a gospel feel, one would almost expect them to start clapping.
________________________________________________________ All in all this album is great. I'd recommend anyone to buy it... in fact I do that at work. A little encouragement here, a shameless plug there... it's a free country, right? *grin*
"Millennium by the Backstreet Boys... go out and get it today!" _________________________________________________________
