Gary Hobsen, a recently divorced young man with a sad, hopeful face that is as appealing as a Saint Bernard puppy, lives in Chicago, Illinois. In the series pilot, he started getting the Tribune... a day early. He discovered that because of his foreknowledge of certain events, he could alter the outcome. Reading that a plane was going to crash, he prevented it by detaining the pilot from taking off. Reading about a drowning in a women's health club, he dives in to rescue her.
This foreknowledge comes with a price... and a cat. Gary stutters some, as he fabricates stories to explain why he is where he is. The Chicago police are often suspicious, and Gary is arrested several times.
Joining Gary is Marissa, a pretty blind woman, and occasionally his nutty, loving parents. With Marissa, he owns and manages a small bar, McGintey's. Marissa knows about the paper, and sometimes helps him. The paper gets in the way of his social life though, as he often has to run off during a date to help someone in trouble.
