Summer and Peter

Chapter 4

We decided to make camp in the cave, since it was the only close shelter in the vast plains and would protect us better than our tent. I walked outside the cave, and saw that day was coming to an end. I watched the sunset, as the sky turned bright yellow. All of the shades of the rainbow were present. The only color in this part of the land was in the sky.  It was a perfect picture. The clouds in the sky were grey on top, but the outline of the bottom was a beautiful lava orange.

Suddenly, someone whispered in my ear. “Gorgeous, isn’t it?” I realized it was Peter, and sighed.

“Hmm. I love to watch sunsets. Too bad everything couldn’t stay this beautiful.” I turned around and smiled at him. He smiled back at me, and then turned around and went back into the cave. I watched him with admiration. I returned to the sunset, just as everything was pink, turning orange. I continued watching it until everything was a shade of blue or purple. I sighed, and then turned around and headed into the cave.  As I came to our sleeping quarters, Peter was writing in a journal or something of the sort. He didn’t notice me come in the room, so I just sat down and rummaged through my bag. I took out my sleeping bag and pillow and a pair of pajamas. Peter didn’t notice me for a few more minutes… until he had finished writing. I was setting up my bed for the night when he saw me. He was flustered, and tried to find the right words to say.

“Uh… Hi. Um, would you like me to sleep outside? Maybe to guard for dragons?” He said lamely.

I smiled at him. “No, you can sleep in here if you like.” I paused. “Now, would you mind turning around so I can change?”

“Sure,” he replied, and then turned around. I changed my clothes, and felt Peter take a glance at me every now and then.

“Okay, Peter. You can turn back now,” I said. He turned around, and then set up his own bed. I crawled in mine, and pulled the blanket up to my chin.

            “Cold?” Peter asked caringly.

“A little,” I replied. He moved his bag and pillow closer to mine.

“Maybe this will help.” He smiled.

“I’m sure it will.” After those few words, I fell asleep and had pleasant dreams.

I woke to see Peter just outside the cave door, sitting in front of a fire. I crawled out of my bed and stretched. I slowly made my way outside and greeted Peter.

            “’Morning,” I said groggily.

“Did you sleep well?” He asked.

“Mhmm.” I looked down at the fire, and saw that he was cooking eggs.

“Want some?” I nodded my head. “They’ll be ready soon.”

“Okay.” I paused. “Is the water in the river good?”

“Yeah. It just doesn’t have any color…” He looked down at the ground and poked at the cooking eggs. I walked away, feeling bad. We’ve got to fix this… I thought sorrowfully.

I brought a change of clothes, yesterday’s clothes, and a bar of soap down to the river. Just as I set things down, I slipped and fell into the river. I screamed. Peter looked up immediately, and saw what happened. He ran as fast as he could to where I was. The current was strong, and I was rapidly moving down stream. Peter tried as much as he could to grab my hand, but his efforts were fruitless. He kept running along side me, trying to figure out how to get me out of the river. I went underwater, and scraped along the riverbed, getting cut by the sharp rocks. I didn’t realize what was happening, but all of a sudden, I felt someone pull me up from above. All I could see was light and a dark figure pulling me out of the treacherous water.

“You’re going to be okay,” a soothing voice said. I was extremely disoriented, and I didn’t know anything at the moment. In a few moments, I passed out.

The touch of cold water on my cheek brought me back to reality. My eyes, slowly opened, but refused to open fully. Everything was a blur.

“Wh – Where am I?” my voice rasped.

“Shh. Don’t talk.” The person put their finger on my lips, telling me not to speak. They then returned to washing my face. “You’ve been asleep for the past couple of hours. It’s starting to get dark. You’re back has a number of cuts on it.” It was a man’s voice. Extremely gentle and caring. “Now get some more sleep. I’ll tell you everything tomorrow.” He put his hand on my forehead, and I smiled. I gently drifted off into a slumber.
