Tech Specs

Renault set upon planning for a R5 Group 4 rally car in 1975 to contend in the World Rally Championships based upon the popular Renault 5 hatchback, known as "Le Car". It was decided also that a slightly de-tuned form of the car would be produced to market to the public - the Renault 5 Turbo.

Design and development of the rally version took place at BEREX, Renault's parallel studio in Dieppe. The standard Le Car hull was used, but a mid-mounted engine with rear wheel drive was implemented and a new suspension system designed.
