Above I have artwork from a Radiohead site. It is beautiful and I love it. You do not see such things on a Britney Spears' website, do you? No. You don't. Do you know why? Because most music today lacks substance. Lacks respect for its own creations. Now, I am well aware that Britney Spears will be the next Madonna, and I'm glad for her, really. But, doesn't it make Britney, along with Madonna, sad? Madonna is revered as a great PERFORMER, or ENTERTAINER, unanimously by critics worldwide. But, Madonna, (and Britney--which goes without saying) is not respected as an ARTIST. The difference between an entertainer and an artist? Kidnap Thom Yorke and make him stand beside Britney, NSYNC, Christina or even Madonna...and I am pretty sure I can guarantee that poor Thom will explode, self-combust if you will. We have all just witnessed the proven theory, fact if you will, that entertainment will always destroy art. Always. ALWAYS destroy art. Perhaps not in the form of self-combustion, but rather in the form of record sales, or publicity, etc. Not that I hate Madonna or Britney (shudders) Spears, but it just depends on the class they're in. Most popular music today can be placed into three different classes. Allow me to elaborate...Class 1: MUSIC FOR THE SOUL PURPOSE OF ENTERTAINMENT. Madonna, Britney, generic boy band, Christina and co. fit in here. It's not a bad category. Hey, if some 11 yr old girl in a sequened "Punk Rock" $75 dollar crop top and pleather pants wants Mommy to pay $120 dollars for front row seats to see Justin, Joey, or whoever in company, that's fine! Good for her, and good for her mother for not instilling boundaries and morals in her own child, but still...good for all of them!!! Entertaining is not a crime. Unless you pay for sexual entertainment or something, perhaps from a hooker. That's a crime, as I witnessed while watching COPS on fox tonite. But anyways, Class 2: MUSIC FOR THE SOUL PURPOSE OF HAVING FUN This is the best category, and these bands will one day be put into the ART class. Bands such as No Doubt, Jimmy Eat World, Save Ferris, Letters to Cleo, MxPx, The Hippos, and many more belong here. Music to fuck around with people's heads, make them feel happy, and have fun putting inside jokes into all your songs. Good Music. With substance, so they don't belong into Class 1. But not pretentious enough to fit into Class 3. I love you, Class 2. You have good, fun, happy time music and you are all cool. I want to be Gwen Stefani. Class 3: MUSIC FOR THE SOUL PURPOSE OF ART. This contains slightly pretetious, tortured, artists. They are all quite good, and if you don't like them you are made to feel like an idiot. Don't even say anything if you dare haven't heard of any of these bands. Because that's the way of these people and their fans. Hate the media, refuse to sell out, but fuck us all over with high ticket prices, or only tour in Japan and other obscure continents such as Europe, IF they even tour. This class's fans keep in touch through the internet. Bands in this class generally have the best websites. Radiohead, Beck, U.N.K.L.E., Nine Inch Nails, Supergrass, Travis, Blur, Ani DiFranco, Travis, Coldplay, Gomez are just a few of these such bands. If you like these bands, you are generally a die-hard David Bowie worshipper as well. This class's followers like to complain about the radio and their bands never getting enough exposure. They like to think they are better than people in Class 1. Most tolerate Class 2. They like to beat up Class 1 followers, or would, if they could find someone to hold their portable MP3 player. And just to clear up any other questions you might have all other music that doesn't quite fit into any of these 3 classes is just crap trying to sound like crap trying to sound like crap which is trying to sound like The Beatles. In conclusion, don't hate Britney for being a no-talent slut. Just think "She's a class 1 and the next Madonna" so you can be like "That's okay, silly class 1!!!" Music is made up of all different classes, and it is not the true music fans' way to discriminate against any particular class. Even the Beatles-wannabe music crap.
