The Mole II

But who's placing them?

As the Mole 2 begins, Anderson Cooper and 14 seemingly ordinary nobodys are in a room at the top of Castle Tarasp in the Swiss Alps.

All players have blindfolds on. He briefly addresses the players, and tells them to take the blindfolds off.

A video clip explains the rules of the game, and introduces the players: Al, Katie, Ali, Bill, Myra, Dorothy, Bob, Bribs, Darwin, Patrick, Heather, Elavia, Lisa, Rob.

One of which, I assure you, is the Mole.

He tells the group to pick two people that they think are natural born leaders.

They choose Bill and Darwin.

Darwin: "Bill's a retired admiral. Pretty clear that he's the leader type. I was surprised that they picked me. I think most people don't really like lawyers."

Anderson tells the other twelve to pack warm clothes for an overnight trip. Bill and Darwin survey them for information.

Darwin: "You can't really tell by looking at someone who's athletic and who's not."

Anderson tells them that the other 12 players will be competing in three games, and that they must choose who does what.

The first game: A bike-crossbow biathlon. Three players must be chosen for that one. The second game: A pulse rope walk. Four for that one. The third game: The swing for life. Anderson tells them to pick the five bravest players for that one.

The two leaders also must bet on the likelihood of success. They can wager $40,000, $20,000, or nothing. Darwin suggests Bob, Bribs, and Rob for the bike-crossbow event since "they all look rather athletic." Bill agrees.

Bob goes first. In thirty minutes, all three of them have to bike down a steep hill, grab two arrows from a bucket, bike back up the steep hill, string the arrow in a crossbow and hit a bullseye in a target.

Bob makes it down to the arrows and back up with a little problem: he falls on the way back up.

Bob: "That hill was much more difficult than I expected. With the altitude. My legs just locked up - I ate it."

He survives to make it to the top of the hill. He takes the first arrow and strings it after a short pause.

First shot: near miss. Second shot: BULLSEYE!

Bribs takes off next. He moves a lot faster than Bob.

Bill: "Watching the players, and look at each player's performance and say 'Was that suspicious or not?'. I would think it odd that the first day the Mole would make an overt move. In fact, for the Mole to really bust a gut and do great and be a star would be a great strategy."

Bribs is back up with the arrows within two minutes. First shot: near miss. Second shot: BULLSEYE!

Rob takes off with a good twenty minutes left on the clock. He coasts down and gets the two arrows, but on the way back up, he pukes up his lunch.

Bob: "When Rob came up that hill, puking and white, my first thought was, 'We've got a supect here.'"

After about five minutes, he's back up and ready to shoot.

First shot: BULLSEYE!

The game is won, but the team cannot be sure any prize was won.

Rob: "I think I aroused some suspicion from people, but, hey, whatever works."

Chosen for the pulse rope walk are Heather, Lisa, Myra, and Al. They have to walk on a tight rope strung between two tall trees. They must also wear a heart monitor. If their heart rate exceeds 130 bpm, they must stop where they are until it falls below 130 bpm.

The last player, in addition to the first rope that everyone must cross, must also cross a higher one.

The time limit is one hour. The order is decided. Myra doesn't want to be first or last. Al volunteers to be last, saying he's not afraid of heights but is nervous.

Heather goes first, and crosses the ropes with no difficulty whatsoever, her heart rate not exceeding 80 bpm.

Bill: "We looked at the players and tried to pick the girls that we thought would be the calmest, in the very brief exposure that we've had to them at this point."

"Heather went across that and she had a pulse rate lower than my resting rate."

"A natural selection for the rope is Myra, the airline pilot. She's used to high places. It shouldn't bother her at all."

Myra is next, and she also has little trouble crossing the ropes, her heart rate a little higher than Heather's but still well below 130.

Myra: "Heights are not my favorite, you know, looking down. In a plane that's something else."

Lisa goes next. She also crosses the rope easily, never topping 130 bpm.

Al is last. He has a good 47 minutes to cross the ropes. Before he even gets to the top of the ladder, his heart rate hits 136, and he must stop where he is till it goes down. Heather tells him to take some deep breaths.Stuck?

After 8 minutes, it finally dips below 130, and he continues. Three steps later, it topped 130 again. 22 minutes later, it is still above 130. Myra coaches him to massage his carotid artery in the hopes that that will help lower his bpm. Quickly, his bpm is low enough again. After two steps, it is too high again.

Al: "My heart can't be racing this fast. Maybe it's nervousness- I'm thinking 'Relax, deep breath'."

Al is in disbelief. After 32 minutes on the ropes, Al has finally made it across the lower rope. He must now go to the higher one. One step on it, and his bpm tops 130. Seven minutes later, it is low enough again, and he crosses the upper rope without further interruption.

Once again, the game is won, but they also must wait to see if they won anything. Al still is in disbelief about his heart rate.

Chosen for the swing for life are Katie, Patrick, Dorothy, Elavia, and Ali. To win the game, all five players must jump from a bridge and swing on a 150 foot cable.

The order is determined. Patrick differs to the ladies. Ali will be first, followed by Katie, Dorothy, and Patrick. Elavia will be last.

Ali goes first. When she is climbing down, Anderson is shown casually eating a sandwich and saying "This looks pretty scary."

She successfully makes the plunge, and seems to even enjoy it.

The next jumper is Katie.

Though extremely frightened, Katie successfully jumps.

Katie: "I want to trust Patrick, because without him, I don't think I could have done that. If he wasn't on my team I don't think I would have been able to do it."

Dorothy jumps next.

Dorothy: "I thought, 'Well, I have no idea whether our leaders bet $40,000 on this game or not, and I didn't want to let the team down."

Full speed ahead, she makes the plunge.

As does Patrick.

But the choice is a little more complicated for Elavia. Anderson offers her an exemption from the first execution quiz. To get it, she must refuse to jump, and forfeit the game.

Elavia accepts the exemption, and the game is sabotaged.

The players have naturally mixed reactions.

Darwin: "When Elavia got her exemption, I was somewhat miffed, but you know what, I understood. I would have totally taken it myself, so."

Al: "I wasn't real thrilled. I thought that was a little early to put your tail between your legs."

Heather: "If she didn't take the exemption, she looks even more like a player, because she's trying work for the team, she's trying to earn the money, for the end."

Bribs: "But, if she is the Mole, then that's a really good way to cover herself up."

Bill and Darwin are now to announce their wagers for the games. $40,000 was wagered on the bike-biathlon. $20,000 was wagered on the pulse rope walk, or as Anderson calls it: "Al's Event". Nothing was wagered on the sabotaged swing game, so they won the maximum amount.

TEST PASSED - +$60,000

TOTAL - $60,000

The players are shown walking up a hillside, to Anderson's mountain hut, which is now their mountain hut. The players are to be presented with journals to record their suspicions. Anderson holds up journal #1. All fourteen are individually numbered. Once inside, they all quiz each other about background info from their player applications and record it.

Bob: "That night at the hut, I kinda stayed in the background and grilled Elavia a little bit."

Outside the hut, Katie and Heather discuss forming a secret coalition. Katie says Elavia is a shady suspect, prime suspect, and explains why.

Katie: "I feel very comfortable with Heather. We have a lot of things in common - we're the same age, and a lot of times I have a hard time reading somebody. Initially I will think that they're awesome and later it'll come back and kick me in the butt."

At the dinner table, Bribs shows an artifact from his grandfather's garage, the original "Mole Killer" in a can, saying to pass it on if he gets executed.

The players' knowledge of each other is now to be put to the test. Anderson tells them to pick the four players who know the group the best. This game is worth $40,000, but that is not all that is at stake. A huge bonfire burns in the background, and a crane holds the players' bags in a net. Anderson hands Katie a pair of binoculars to look. Not only is $40,000 at stake, but so is everyone's belongings. The four chosen, Patrick, Dorothy, Katie, and Ali go off with Anderson. The rest remain and hope.

The rules of this test: Eight questions are asked. One missed answer, and the money is lost. Four missed answers, and the bags burn.

Katie: "The stress was there. The pressure was on. That's something that I never thought would happen. Like, we'd have to play for all our stuff, all our possessions."

Dorothy: "I feel very stressed, I feel everyone's watching, with the other players, but to have the responsibility of everyone's personal belongings, of everyone's sentimental items, that definitely has a heavier weight placed on you."

Katie bemoans the fact that her stuffed cow Meadowmuffin is in her bag. She gets very upset at the thought that it will burn.

Ali is first. The question: "Who wrote in their application that they would like to normalize relations with Cuba?"

Ali answers Darwin. Anderson informs her that that is incorrect. The correct answer is Patrick.

TEST FAILED

TOTAL - $60,000

The money is lost, they now merely play for their stuff.

Next is Dorothy. The question: "Who describes themselves as having a big ego internally, but being outwardly modest?"

Dorothy says she does not know, but answers Bribs. That is wrong. The answer is Rob.

Katie is next. The question: "Whose favorite alcoholic drinks are Sam Adams lager and wine?"

Katie guesses Bob. That is wrong. Al is the correct answer.

Patrick must now get his question right or it's burn bags burn. The question: "Who has dressed as Marge Simpson for Halloween?"

Patrick says Lisa. That is wrong. The answer is Alison.

Slowly, the crane lowers the bags into the fire.

I didn't think this was legal.

The players comisserate over their lost belongings.

Katie: "This is stupid. It's a stuffed animal. But, like, I go to bed every night with my cow, and my friends and family know how much that means to me, and how I bring it with me everywhere. It's like taking Linus' blanket away."

Al: "The one thing I'm going to miss the most from my luggage is the photo of my wife and girls. Don't put this on! I don't want them seeing me upset. It was my only link to home. Everything else is replaceable, I don't care about that stuff. That's what's important to me, right there. So that hurts."

Heather: "My Bible was in that bag. I got really upset about that. I've had that Bible since I was 13, that's what I study, I keep notes in it. That's not something you burn. I think really it angered me a lot, because my belongings are gone, and I want them back."

Bob: "I feel like I should be upset about my nice, neat flaming luggage, but I'm not. I don't know why. It was strange. Maybe I'm still in denial."

Darwin: "I think Patrick's the sneakiest. If I was in Patrick's position, we would have moved on to the next question because I guessed, just based on my limited exposure to Alison that she would be the type to dress up as Marge Simpson for Halloween."

Lisa: "I'm not happy with the choice of the players. Because I suspect both Dorothy and Ali as the Mole, and to have them both down there answering questions was not my idea of who should."

Anderson tells the players that they will have the opportunity to buy some more clothes. He also reminds them that their first execution quiz is coming up. Elavia is not at risk.

1. Is the Mole male or female?

Patrick: "Thinking about the swing for life, it appears to me that Elavia makes a choice to go fifth in a rather calculated move.

Rob: "In fact, I think Elavia might be a kind of obvious choice, for taking the exemption. It seems to be on everyone's mind. Of course, this doesn't mean anything."

2. What was the Mole's role during the leadership game?

Katie: "I think Al really could be the Mole, with the whole rope course thing. He had the high pulse rate, yet he wanted to go up the highest."

3. At the Villa Engiadina last night, the Mole slept in which room?

Al: "Sure, I could be the Mole. But then again, maybe I'm not the Mole. But that's all up to everyone else to figure out if I am or not."

4. What was the Mole's originating airport for the game?

5. As Anderson faced the players when they first met in the Castle Tarasp, which seat was the Mole seated in, starting with Anderson's left?

Myra: "When we took the blindfolds off, two people looked straight ahead and were not looking at anyone. Those two people were Elavia and Bribs."

6. Where did the Mole attend college?

7. How old is the Mole?

Dorothy: "I am suspicious of Bob. I think he has a way of evading answers. He seems to also want to always get away from me, which I think would be an odd move for a player to make, just on the first day."

Bob: "As far as Elavia is concerned, I learned about her, that one of her good traits is that she can lie, cheat, steal very well. She's very sly, smooth operator."

8. What was the Mole's most embarassing moment?

Ali: "The suspicions are driving me nuts, actually. Cuz one day, I'm suspicious of somebody, and the next day 'no, they're perfectly normal'."

9. What kind of wine did the Mole have to drink with dinner prior to the burn bags game last night?

Lisa: "While the stuff was burning, some people, immediately, were just emotionless. Myra said that there was nothing she cared about in the bag. Bill also, really, it didn't seem to register with Bill that his stuff was burning."

10. Who is the Mole?

The fourteen players gather into the Castle Tarasp for the execution.

Click on the pictures below. If a green thumbprint appears, that player is still in the game. If a red thumbprint appears, that player has been executed and must leave immediately.

Elavia is not at risk.
