Celebrity Mole - Episode 4

Same ol' same ol' prior to the show.

Michael: "Corbin Bernsen, the captain, a lunatic, is gone from the game."

Kathy: "I really am genuinely shocked. You know what? You should have known. I'm the Mole."

Erik: "I didn't like his cocky persona, I really didn't, but but he grew on me. And when he left, I realized I'm gonna miss him. He's a really good guy."

Frederique: "Michael, Kathy, Erik, moi... (laughs)...bye."

In (where else?) Hawaii, we see some interesting shots of surfers, including one dog surfing.

Kathy: "I saw some hula girls, and I swear to God, I thought we were going to have, like, a luau. And it would be, guess who can eat the most poi."

Ahmad bids the players good morning at the beach. He hopes they're in good spirits. They'll have fun today. Today's game is worth $20,000. The gentlemen's games will be right down their alleys, so says Ahmad, speaking of their athletic prowess. Michael and Erik will do the hula, and Kathy and Frederique will surf. They have 30 minutes to get on a surfboard, both feet on and both hands in the air. Michael and Erik must hula continuously during that 30 minutes or the game is lost.

Erik and Michael receive their coconut bras and grass skirts for the hula-ing. Two lovely instructors teach them the fine art of the hula. Erik shows off his skills. Michael isn't as thrilled to hula. Nor is he thrilled of the fun Kathy, Frederique and Ahmad are having at his expense.

Oh dear dear...they will hula to the classic Mole anthem of Don Ho's "Tiny Bubbles." A man opposite the hula floor plays the ukulele and sings the song.

Shout out to Al Spielman wherever he is.

Michael: "I felt as clumpy and ungraceful and uncoordinated as you could ever imagine."

Michael smells something burning: his career.

Ahmad tells the ladies it's time to stop laughing at the men and put on their wetsuits. What a shock, Kathy gets bleeped. An instructor tells them strategies to surf.

Kathy: "I haven't used my quads that much in maybe, you know, eight years of gym class in grade school put together."

"Tiny Bubbles" and the dancing begin and Kathy and Frederique wander out on the water.

Michael: "I just remember going up like this and kind of like almost continuing over and falling flat on my back 'cuz the sun just wore me out."

Kathy: "I am not the surfing type. I don't like the sun. It doesn't like me. I don't like wetsuits and I don't like the big long boards that can fall on your head."

Frederique: "What was I expecting from the first game? I didn't expect that I was going to be surfing!"

Erik's getting the hang of it, but...

Michael: "As I'm standing there, you know, roasting in that sun, I just felt like, you know this is bogus you know, 'cuz they're not going to make it."

Kathy: "So we're sitting there on the surfboards. I'm like, 'Wow, this is pretty...whoa!'

"I was trying the new upside-down surfing that's so edgy, no one's even brave enough to do it except me. There's no waves. No one pushed me. It was like the hand of God saying 'Uh uh.'"

Kathy and Frederique have difficulty standing on their surfboards, and Michael and Erik have difficulty standing the sun.

Frederique: "And then suddenly you hear, 'Come on paddle!' It's also pretty dangerous in this area.

"And there I was, going. I mean, it's pretty awesome. It was so amazing."

Frederique successfully paddles 'like a mad animal' as their instructor put it and stands up for 5 seconds not once but two separate times. She did it.

Erik: "Frederique blew me away. I couldn't believe she stayed up the entire time on the way in. I was very impressed. She's definitely got surfer potential, especially for someone with her height."

Kathy: "Frederique can go do a beach party movie with, you know, Frankie Avalon for all I care. 'Cuz I hated it. My own sweat was, like, filling my left eye. I basically was jumping up on a surfboard covered in sweat with this expression on my face.(puckers and squints left eye) I don't wanna lake scractch my legs up and stuff, and I swear to God I felt one slight scrape on my ankle and I was just like 'Aah!' and I panicked. I'm outta here.

"He was like, 'Get up and do it!' I was like 'Look, hukilau, it's not gonna happen."

Kathy gives up. The instructor tries to talk her into contnuing, but she still gives up.

Erik: "I don't understand paddling in after ten minutes. She had two instructors with her."

Michael: "I did find the speed with which Kathy got out of the water somewhat suspicious. Since the last execution, I've sort of shifted my focus toward Kathy a lot more."

As if we hadn't already seen it, Ahmad reviews that Erik, Michael and Frederique all completed their challenges, but Kathy did not.

Frederique: "I mean, to me, she honestly is not the athlete. She didn't do it very well and, um, because of her we lost money."

Ahmad will give them another chance. Frederique stayed up ten seconds. He asks Erik to look at the waves, and tell him how long he could stay up on a surfboard this afternoon. Erik takes a glance and says "close to a minute."

Kathy: "A minute?? He knows that she stood up for 10 seconds and he wants to stay up for a minute. Apparently he thought he was going to surf to Oahu on 1 wave."

He tones it down a bit, saying 20 seconds. So if Erik can stay up for 20 seconds within a 10 minute period, $10,000 will be won. Erik, psyched, heads for his board.

Erik: "Ahmad offered me $10,000 to catch a wave and stand up for what I would think is a decent amount of time."

He paddles, stands, and the first time stays up for 7 seconds.

Frederique and Michael watch him on the beach and count his time. The second time he's up and solid for 11 seconds before crashing into the rocks.

Frederique: "Definitely Erik was suspicious in that game. I mean, he is the surf guy. He landed in the rocks, which is sort of interesting."

TEST FAILED

TOTAL - $151,000

Erik, dejected, says he should stick to hula dancing.

Ahmad tells the players at the lunch table that the last execution featured a tie. Corbin was slower than the other player in the tie, so he was executed last round.

Michael: "I was terrified, 'cuz I automatically assume it's me. It's the damnable thing about this whole game is that you don't know which answers you got right and which ones you got wrong."

Erik: "I was wondering if it was me."

Kathy: "I definitely considered that it could have been me. I'm hoping it was Frederique and I'm hoping I can beat her tonight, but I don't know."

Kathy and Erik strategize for the quizzes in the van. Kathy tells him that there won't be any "old stuff" on the quizzes until the last one, and tells him not to tell that to Frederique.

Kathy: "I always openly say to him, 'Okay, this is how I'm gonna vote tonight. You do what you want, but I really think this is the way to go.

"I was completely working on trying to get the other players to think that there's a chance Erik is the Mole. The person we worked hardest on is Frederique."

Erik: "At this point of the game, I couldn't trust these girls, not even with the time of day."

The players are driven in 2 vans across the island (Erik and Michael are in one, and Kathy and Frederique occupy the other), and they are blindolded on the way. The location of the next game must be secret from them.

Kathy: "I got really, really motion sick, and I'm suspicious because no one could get as nauseous as I do.

"At some point we connected with the boys, and we're trying to smell. Do we smell water? Do we smell desert? We all ended up in 'Mystery Restaurant'"

However we, the viewers can see that they're in Martini Yacht Club.

Ahmad tells them to take their blindfolds off. In this next game, one player will get the chance at the final exemption.

Michael: "I felt the stakes upped themselves when we found out about the final exemption."

Ahmad needs two teams. Erik and Kathy are a team, Michael and Frederique are the other.

Erik: "I'd say I want to be with Frederique 'cuz that would blow it with her thinking I am the M-O-L-E."

Kathy: "I think Erik was either trying to look like the Mole or trying to assert himself. Either one is fine with me."

This game has three rounds. In the first round, each team will be given the same two mathematical brainteasers. The team that answers both correctly in the shortest amount of time will move on while the others will be out. Michael and Frederique, blindfolds on, are taken away.

Kathy: "Then Ahmad said it was going to be a math game, and I'm no math whiz, but I thought, 'I can work an equation better than I can surf!' so I stand a little bit of a chance."

Michael: "And my heart also sank a little 'cuz I know Erik's a bit of a math whiz."

Ahmad shows Erik and Kathy two sample puzzles similar to the ones that will be in the game. They must find the missing number to go in a blank portal, using any combination of addition, multiplication, subtraction or division. For example, (this is my own example since I can only go linear), 3 4 5 6 11 would be 3 X 4 + 5 - 6 = 11, so 7 2 5 8 would equal 11 as 7 X 2 + 5 - 8 = 11. Within the pair of puzzles, the same operations are done in the same positions.

The ships on the cards again bear the name "Das Mole."

Their first is 14 10 15 290. Within seconds, it's actually Kathy that gets the answer 15 + 14 X 10 = 290. They go to the second and get 12 + 16 X 10 = 280, and they are correct.

The second puzzle starts with 6 9 30 54. It may just be the editing, but Erik seems to get it immediately, 6 X 9 - 30 = 24. Moving that over to the other one, he gets 7 X 8 - 26 = 30. That is correct, stop the clock.

It took them 2:23 to get them both.

Kathy: "I wasn't surprised that Erik did well at that test, at all. Because when you're that age, you've taken a lot more tests on a daily basis."

It's Frederique and Michael's turn. They have to beat the time of 2:23 to win. They don't do quite as well. At the 2:23 mark, they're still on the first one.

Frederique: "My partner was useless!

"And of course I'm Dutch and it took me a little bit long...no. It irritates me that I took so long actually."

Michael: "It was revealed today that I am terrible at math. I liked school when I was a kid, I enjoyed everything. I did well in every subject except math.

"I see numbers and, you know, symbols, I just you know, my brain starts to cut off.

"Geography, history, anything else I would have felt more confident."

After 5 minutes and change they have the first. They are correct after 9:35.

Erik and Kathy will move on to the next round. Michael and Frederique have to put their blindfolds on and be taken away.

In round two, Kathy and Erik will play against each other. The winner gets the chance at the final exemption. Ahmad will ask each one ten multiple-choice questions. Whoever gets all of them right in the shortest time will advance to the final round for the final exemption.

They have to decide who goes first, and resort to rock-paper-scissors. Erik makes a rock, and Kathy sticks one finger out. Erik declares it scissors and he wins. He'll go second.

Kathy: "Erik and I played rock-paper-scissors, and so I went like that(points one finger) which I don't know what I thought that was, but I thought it might be paper. It turns out it's sci--. It's not even scissors. And then, whatever he did beat it, and I don't know 'cuz I've never played it."

These are multiple-choice questions. Ahmad will keep restating the choices until the correct one is picked.

RED IS TO RUBY AS BLUE IS TO

DIAMOND, SAPPHIRE, EMERALD, GARNET

Kathy correctly answers SAPPHIRE.

ARM IS TO ELBOW AS FOOT IS TO

KNEE, LEG, CALF, ANKLE

She incorrectly answers CALF. Ahmad repeats KNEE, LEG, ANKLE, and she says ANKLE for the correct answer.

12 IS TO HEXAGON AS 8 IS TO

DECAGON, OCTAGON, SQUARE, TRIANGLE

Incorrectly she answers HEXAGON. Second choice SQUARE is correct.

PINTO IS TO FORD AS GREMLIN IS TO

TOYOTA, FIAT, AMC, CHEVROLET

Kathy correctly answers AMC.

DEER IS TO STAG AS TURKEY IS TO

HEN, COCK, ROOSTER, GANDER

She says COCK, it's right.

THAMES IS TO ENGLAND AS RHINE IS TO

AUSTRIA, FRANCE, ITALY, GERMANY

Her answer AUSTRIA is wrong. Ahmad repeats the choices and she says GERMANY and that's correct.

EDISON IS TO LIGHTBULB AS MARCONI IS TO

PRINTING PRESS, RADIO, COMPUTER, VCR

Her first answer of VCR is wrong. Next she guesses PRINTING PRESS, but that's also wrong. Finally she gets RADIO.

WATT IS TO POWER AS LUMEN IS TO

ELECTRICITY, PRESSURE, LIGHT, HUMIDITY

Kathy answers LIGHT, correctly.

MADRID IS TO SPAIN AS LONDON IS TO

JAPAN, AMERICA, GREECE, ENGLAND

Even Kathy knows this one right off the bat to be ENGLAND.

3 IS TO EARTH AS 7 IS TO

JUPITER, URANUS, MARS, SATURN

She guesses VENUS, JUPITER, and MARS before getting it.

Kathy: "I heard questions about Uranus, you know, I lost focus."

Her time was 2:10. Erik must now beat that time.

Erik gets #1 right on the first try.

He gets #2 right on the second try, first guessing LEG.

He gets #3 right on the first try.

He gets #4 right on the first try.

He gets #5 right on the third try, first guessing HEN and ROOSTER.

He gets #6 right on the first try.

He gets #7 right on the second try, first guessing PRINTING PRESS.

He gets #8 right on the first try.

He gets #9 right on the first try.

He gets #10 right on the first try.

Kathy: "In the second round, the questions were great. I love a multiple-choice test, and I just had fun doing it."

Kathy's time was 2:10. Erik's was 2:07. Erik advances to the next round, the shot at the final exemption.

Kathy: "And then to find out that Erik beat me by three seconds was...just completely chapped my ass."

Erik: "This exemption is extremely important. I knew that I would do my damnedest to get it."

At this point in the game...

In the final round, Erik will have to complete a memory game with a deck of cards. 52 giant cards lay in front of him, and he can only turn over two cards at once. If he finishes the game before the other players can find him, he wins the exemption.

Michael, Kathy, and Frederique are taken away, blindfolded. They are told that Erik is back where they started and that they must find him to stop the exemption and win $20,000 for the pot. What they aren't told is that he's only half a mile away.

Ahmad gives them the command go, and off they run. They split up.

Erik: "As a kid, I played the memory game all the time. It was pretty difficult, just 'cuz of the time and pressure."

Frederique: "Kathy, and Michael and I, we sort of split up. I kind of knew a few things. I knew it was at the water. I knew it had several stairs. The railings were metal. There was an elevator, so it had to be sort of two floors. So I just started running."

Frederique takes off with Michael not far behind.

Michael: "I was trying to remember what I knew about the restaurant. I knew that it was close to the water."

Erik has 22 pairs left.

Kathy: "I had a very interesting strategy, which was I was determined to not run. I did not want to sweat any more today than I already had, which was buckets. So I immediately turn to a group of people and said 'Who's a local?'

"I thought I would just hitchhike because people were saying it's only a mile or two away.

So you're not even going to believe who picked me up. This is sick. Okay, so I'm hitchhiking, and this guy comes along. And if you're watching, I'm sorry, sir, but I'm going to be honest - - I think he was retarded.

"You know, I don't know how many teeth he has, but it's not a lot. Then I get in the car, and the guy's like 'Okay, whatever you say, lady.' This is who I choose to get a ride from.

"So he's got a son who's about 12, who's holding his T-shirt over his face like he's on Cops because he doesn't want to be filmed. He's apparently running from the law at 12, getting a good head start, which maybe he learned from daddy.

"I'm trying to tell him 'We have to go faster, and stuff.' And then the kid goes, he's holding his shirt up and he goes, 'Are those the people you're competing against?' And I go 'Yeah. See how they're still ahead of us."

How horrible can she be?

She has been directed to the wrong restaurant.

Erik is nearly halfway through his deck of cards. Michael is also headed for the wrong restaurant.

Michael: "If I'd known I was going to be running that long I would have worn different pants, different shirt. It was all getting in my way. Oh man this is frustrating. I had to stop and pull my pants up so many times."

Erik has only 11 pairs left.

Kathy, upon entering the wrong restaurant, asks them directions to the right one.

Kathy: "I hate these kind of directions. 'You just go over there.' (points) Yeah, go over there, and you'll see with the thing.

"I'm tempted to hitch again except I'm afraid to get a rickshaw at this point."

Erik is down to 7 pairs. Frederique is closing in fast.

Frederique: "I didn't wear a sports bra, which wasn't good, but anyway, I kept running running, running."

Erik finds the last pair and has the exemption.

TEST FAILED

TOTAL - $151,000

Frederique: "And then I saw where it was. Or what I thought it was.

"And I went up the stairs, and there was this complete moronic guard standing at this restaurant. Didn't want to let me through, and we almost got in a fistfight. Even the guys behind me said, 'Cool it!' to the guy. It got pretty nasty there for a moment. I was like, 'Get out of my way! I have to get there!'"

Frederique walks in to find Erik casually sitting behind a table, basking in his exemption, fanning himself with the last card he turned over.

Kathy: "Then, finally, I find the place, and I run up there, and as I'm running up there I see Frederique up there going, 'Oh, no! I can't believe...I just missed him by minute!'

"So I just sat down and I thought 'Oh, did anyone get the exemption from him?' And no one did."

Annoying and hateful...

Michael, however, is still lost. He's passed the restaurant by a quarter of a mile.

Frederique: "And there Erik sits, like a cool cat, relaxed like nothing happened, with his exemption."

Erik: "I am really surprised that I was able to hold in my happiness when I found out I got the exemption because it worked really well, because Frederique is very suspicious of me now. Seeing as I wasn't flipping out when I found out I got the exemption."

Michael finally makes it to the restaurant. He is disheartened to hear that Frederique was a minute too late.

Erik: "Perhaps knowing about the 20 grand Michael would have tried a little harder. Okay, we got some suspicious behavior going on then."

Michael: "I was upset because I wondered if I had shot past the place, which, in effect, I had, but I was looking on the wrong side of the street.

"I realize that now, with less people in the game, it really is going to come down to, sort of every man for himself. The pressure is increasing, and you're going to start to see people behaving in different ways. For myself, I am a little bit more reserved from the group than I have been in the past, just because now I really feel, you know, I really need to observe."

In the van, Michael says he once felt close to Kathy but not now. He wants to mentally block everything about this afternoon.

Frederique: "We really feel like we're a team in some ways, which is of course, very deceitful."

Erik: "The first day of playing the game was very, very intimidating, and I had no idea what I was doing. Not only am I enjoying the game but I'm just really into the game now.

"Suspect A: Michael Boatman. He is definitely a suspect for being the Mole."

Erik says Michael's a good guy, but is convinced he's the Mole.

The players ask Erik how it feels to be exempt. He says it feels absolutely amazing. He thought he was going down tonight, and now he knows he won't. He loves it.

Tomorrow is Michael's birthday, so the cook brings in a little cake for him. It's proper to celebrate his birthday tonight, since by tomorrow he could be gone.

Michael: "I'm nervous about tonight's execution as I usually am. Less so, because I'm just kind of sun-boiled right now, so I'm sort of in a half Twilight Zone daze."

Ahmad makes a toast to Erik's exemption and to the one of the other three who will have to take a hike.

It's now time for the quiz.

1. Is the Mole male or female?

2. In the exemption game, did the Mole's group answer the math questions first or second?

Frederique: "Erik has done several things which make it look like he's informed. He sort of maneuvers Mole-ish."

3. Did the Mole stand up for at least 5 seconds on a surboard at the Hulapalooza game?

Michael: "When Ahmad offered Erik the $10,000 for the pot, I thought he'd be able to do it, because I know he's been talking about surfing the whole time."

4. What color was the Mole's blindfold at the beginning of the exemption game?

5. Which group was the Mole in at the beginning of the Hulapalooza game?

Michael: "Now because there are four of us everybody's very suspicious and there's fewer people to spread the suspicion around, so everything now has greater meaning."

6. Who sat to the Mole's left at the beginning of the exemption game?

7. At lunch, who did the Mole say was the most influential person in their life?

8. What color pants or shorts was the Mole wearing during the exemption game?

Michael: "Kathy looked very calm and relaxed and rested, like she hadn't really done very much."

9. Did the Mole play the multiple choice round during the exemption game?

10. Who is the Mole?
