Well, KingShine is a 3D OpenGL chess board, just this. Currently can't do anything more than moving pieces on the board, but I have a dirty patch to make XBoard use it as an alternate GUI, so you can play against your favorite chess engine (or use ICS) with XBoard + KingShine.
