The Hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien
Okay this may be a bit more 'childish' than The Lord of the Rings but, well that's what it is. Anyway, it's still a great book and you really should read it before you read LotR because it gives you all the background information.
It's about a Hobbit called Bilbo who is dragged out of his comfortable hole and dragged off on an adventure with a troop of dwarves and an old wizard called Gandalf. They encounter trolls, orcs and the great dragon Smaug unearthing secrets and discovering treasures as they travel on.
