Bathrobe Thursdays...
Every Thursday of the session is a "bathrobe" Thursday at Lancaster, meaning that some students will wear a bathrobe for the duration of the day. This tradition first began as "a neat thing to do" in '95 by Dennis Clarke. As the years went by, the meaning behind this tradition has been attributed to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (aka. The Bible of CTY Lancaster), by Douglas Adams. Thursday is the day bathrobes are worn because in the HHGTHG the world ends on a Thursday. The reason for the bathrobes however, is less clear. Some say it is because Arther Dent is wearing a dressing gown when the world ends, and that a dressing gown is much like a bathrobe. Others say they it is because of the high importance the HHGTHG places on towels, and that towels are much like bathrobes. Others say that bathrobes are the perfect dress for Thursdays because they are a combination of dressing gowns and towels. Needless of say, whoever you may ask, you will likely get a slightly different explanation of why they wear their bathrobe.
There are many different jokes associated with bathrobes and Thursdays. The first is a "belief" that bathrobes are the only true type of clothing to exist on Thursdays. This has many implications, one of the most common being that all those who do not wear a bathrobe on Thursdays are naked, and that those with their bathrobes open are flashing everyone. Another joke is not commonly heard anymore, but was once played on anyone who did not know why bathrobes were worn when they asked why, it goes something like this:
Non-Bathrobe Wearer: Why are you wearing a bathrobe?
Bathrobe Wearer: What bathrobe?
Non-Bathrobe Wearer: That bathrobe.
Bathrobe Wearer: Oh, that bathrobe.
Non-Bathrobe Wearer: So, why are you wearing it?
Bathrobe Wearer: Because it's Thursday.
If the curious non-bathrobe wearer continued questioning, either the joke would repeat, or they would be refered to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
