Fans for Hire

Earlier today, while I was visiting ffinsider.net, I saw that they had recently posted an interview with Tara Strong, the person who voiced Rikku in Final Fantasy X. I eagerly clicked upon it, seeing how Rikku is my favorite character, and after sending the link in an IM for Cammie to read also, I began to read down the page. Now, as talented as she is, after being asked if she had known about the series beforehand, she replied, to my horror, that she had heard of it, but nothing past that and had no idea about the huge fanbase behind it. Why did this bring me horror? Well, I believe that if you’re going to take part in something that is so important to some people, you should at least have taken part in some activity related to it. Call me crazy, but wouldn’t a fan do a much better job?

Which brings me to the point of this spiel. When someone is a fan of something, if they were chosen to take part in making what they loved, wouldn’t they do their absolute best to bring justice to it? Would they not put more into it than someone who is very talented, but doesn’t have the same respect for it? Sure they’ll do a good job, because it is their job to do so, but the fan would do their best job because they love it and would be honored that they were chosen to do this.

Final Fantasy isn’t the only place where this happens. Let’s take the Harry Potter movies for example. I was watching an interview with the cast, when one of the actors (I can’t remember who) said that they had never read the books before. I was shocked. You’re working on something that billions of people will go and see because they have been drawn into the charm of the books, and you yourself have not even read them? That shows to me that they see it as nothing more than a job. Yes, they may look the part, and yes they are talented, and yes their hearts are into it, but only on the acting perspective. There would be a whole other drive to do their absolute best if they were themselves a fan.

Maybe these companies are just confused. That’s what I’m hoping. Someone should tell them they’re wrong. We should tell them before someone gets really angry and shows up at their door with pitchforks and flaming torches. Anyway, to sum it all up, HIRE FANS!
