Feminism...OOH

To set the tone for this rant, here is a quote said by Rebecca West:
"I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute."
And to that I have but two words to say to that, “Hell yeah!”

Feminism, ooh, just saying that word makes a couple of people angry. What’s the big deal, I ask? I’ve found that expressing my thoughts on this topic have marred me as some sort of satanist in the church. Many people argue that men have a role, as do women. I do not disagree, and in my opinion feminism is not in any way about crossing roles. There are just some roles that women have been stuck with, like the whole housewife thing, that women are to have no life outside the home. Another issue is that whole thing taken so many times out of context, that “women are to be treated like they are the weaker vessel”. Too many people look at that and go “ha! Where’s your feminism now?” Look at it again. It says, “like” not “are”, big difference.
Feminism is not just a bunch of lesbians hating on men. It’s an idea, or rather an ideal. There are inequalities between men and women, unfair inequalities. This does not mean that men and women are the same, face it, we are different, but being different has nothing to do with the level of respect we receive. As women walk down the street, respect is not calling out things we’d rather not hear. Now, some are not bothered, some even go out of their way to get such reactions, but I’m not one of them. The fact that in many jobs men get paid more than women, or not even that, just a man being considered better for a job just because he’s a man. It’s not about crossing roles, or being the same; it’s about respect.
Do I consider myself a feminist? It’s a rather strong term, and the fact that I don’t do much to help this ideal along, and that most of my friends at school are guys, I can’t say that I really am, in the sense of the word that society uses. There are different types of feminists, just like you have with any idea. You have the extremists, those kind of cool with the idea and those in the middle. I consider myself in the middle. Some things bother me more than others, and hey, I’m being honest here, most girls really bother me.
So yeah, there’s my addition to sort of a touchy subject. Realize now, that these views are purely my own, don’t tag them to anyone else unfairly.
