Calming Techniques

Techniques:

These techniques can be done before or during the assessment to assist in stress reduction. Small breaks during the test that allow a moment to close your eyes and take deep breaths can re-focus the mind. Breathing exercises, inhale slowly through your nose for a count of seven and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. For younger children blowing bubbles. According to Bulletproof (2007), “Visualization is a powerful mind tool. Research showed that the subconscious mind can’t differentiate between real events and visualized ones. Because of that visualized imagery can have a profound effect on the mind” (Top 5 healthy relaxation techniques, para. 7). Many students will benefit from music being played in the classroom, a classical selection or nature sounds have a relaxing effect. Seat assignment is critical for all learners. It is important for students to be relaxed and not increase stress by other students or distraction in the room. Some students will benefit from having a textured ball to squeeze during breaks or a band on the bottom of their chair to bounce on. This releases stress without having to physically get up out of the chair or desk.
