Water and Boating Safety

I am a ninth grade student at Skyview Junior High School and I am doing a year long project called Breakout. For Breakout I everybody in the ninth grade must choose a topic that they enjoy and do lots of work with it. Part of Breakout is making a difference where you try to make a difference in and around the world by doing something with your topic. I am making this website for people to learn about safety when out on the water. Also to make a difference I am going to hang at least 50 posters up at stores, churchs, and other public places. So if you know a way to make a difference in your community please do so and you might be saving a life. Hope this website helps you with whatever you are using the information for.

Here are some facts to start off with

• Water Fatalities are decreasing more and more every year
• In 1963, there were 33 deaths for every 100,000 boats. In 2000, there were 5.5 fatalities for each 100,000 boats.
• From 1991 to 1999, there was a 32% reduction in boating fatalities, even though there was a 15% growth in the number of registered boats in the U.S. during that same period.
• Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for 15-19 year-olds
• Among 15-24 year olds, of the 88 who drowned between 1993 and 1997, 73 were males.
• There are now more teens and young adults than young children who die from drowning in our state.
• It is estimated that in the United States, there are 50,867,840 acres of lakes; 633,109 miles of rivers; and 88,633 miles of coastal shoreline (including bays and inlets).
• More than half of all the people in the U. S. live within 50 miles of a coastline.
