Ashen Phoenix This card was one of three inspired by an essya I wrote for school on animal image themes in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. In describing the imagery of the Salamander, the Phoenix and the mechanical Hound, my nerdy side moved me to make magic cards about each, one of which was the Ashen Phoenix. The Phoenix seems almost to be a black card with its damaging its controller and constant reanimation, but with a twist: where black usually pays mana and/or life to bring its dead back to existence, the Phoenix makes you pay to keep it in the graveyard. A player low on life may wish to simply remove the creature completely to eliminate the chaos (the sign of a true red card) and trouble it causes.
