When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs 31:28-29 (NIV)

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator,

and I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I saw you feed a stray cat,

and I learned it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I saw you make my favorite cake just for me,

and I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I heard you say a prayer,

and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I felt you kiss me goodnight,

and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I saw tears come from your eyes,

and I learned that sometimes things hurt,

and it's really okay to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I saw that you cared,

and I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking,

I looked . . . and wanted to say thanks

for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I climbed up onto the counter,

reached on top of the fridge

and ate a chocolate chip cookie,

and felt accomplishment

because I was able to get it myself.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I gave our cat some extra milk,

because I wanted to share while I got some for me!

When I thought you weren't looking,

I licked the icing off of my favorite cake,

and I knew that you make

the bestest cakes in the whole wide world.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I skipped my prayers one night,

and felt so guilty that I said my morning prayers twice,

just to make up for it.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I gave our puppy a kiss,

he wagged his tail and licked a lot,

and I felt warmth, love and really, really wet!

When I thought you weren't looking,

I cried because of the nasty things

that the kids around me said.

But I learned from you

that friends accept you exactly as you are.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I made you breakfast;

blackened the bacon, hardened the eggs,

burnt the toast, and carried it up to you on a tray.

Then heard you say, that I was a really good cook.

When I thought you weren't looking,

I tried to do new things . . .

because of your encouragement, patience and love.

And now I just want to say "thanks"

for all the things you let me do,

When I thought you weren't looking.
