SSH 5 A was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at a junction with the Maple Valley branch of PSH 5 (Now SR 169) at Summit, aka Four Corners, and headed west via Kent to Jct PSH 1 (US 99) at Midway. Today, SSH 5A is part of SR 516.
