There have been various proposals to link SR 6 (formerly PSH 12) with SR 4 (formerly PSH 12/US 830) somewhere east of US 101 and west of I-5/US 99. When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in 1964, the number SR 402 was assigned to a route from US 830 (now SR 4) at Grays River to SR 6 at Pe Ell. This proposed corridor had previously been designated SSH 12G. In 1971, this proposed corridor was dropped from the state highway system.
