The Lee-Volpentest Bridge

I-182 from Richland to Pasco

The I-182 Columbia River crossing consists of two 3 Lane bridges. Although the bridges look like mirror images of each other, the upstream bridge (right side of photo) was completed in 1984, the downstream bridge in 1986. The earlier bridge was temporarily used for two way local traffic between Richland and Pasco. Both bridges have a pedestrian-bicycle path on the righ hand side of each roadway.

The bridges are named the Lee-Volpentest Bridges. Curtis Lee and his business partner Robert (Bob) Philip bought the Pasco Herald in 1947, moved it to Kennewick, turned it into a daily, and renamed it the Tri-City Herald. Mr. Lee was the publisher. Sam Volpentest was a prominent Tri-Cities businessman and civic leader. He was instrumental in promoting the construction of I-182 in the Tri-Cities.

This photograph was taken in February 2003 from the parking lot for the pedestrian-bicycle path on the Pasco end of the crossing.
