*BLOOD COLLECTION SITES:

1. Lateral saphenous vein (crosses over stifle).
2. Cephalic vein (dorsum of the forearm).
3. Jugular vein.
4. Cranial vena cava.
5. If all else fails - toenail clip (1-2 hematocrit tubes and a smear).


*INJECTION SITES:

1. Subcutaneous: back, flank. Be aware of fat layers; fluids may be slowly absorbed; large volumes (up to 100ml/kg) possible.

2.Intramuscular: thigh.

3.Intravenous: lateral saphenous, jugular via catheter.


*RECTAL TEMPERATURE: 36.1-37.2 (C) / 97-99 (F)


*QUICK FACTS:

1. Hedgehogs have a very keen sense of smell and hearing, but their sense of vision is only fair.

2. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during night time hours, and sleeping most of the day.

3.Lifespan: 3 to 5 years is the average, for african pygmy hedgehogs.

5.They require a house temperature of at least 75 degrees, but do not do well at very high temperatures.
