One Christmas season, a few years after my divorce, I awoke every night for a week to the sounds of my firstborn crying at my bedroom door. Each night, he asked me, "Mom, where is my dad? Why won't he call me?" It was very heart-wrenching to see my son agonize over his father's absence. I had no answers for him. Neither did I understand the choice his father had made not to see the children. I, instead, held my son for a long time and cried with him, trying to explain, and finally telling him to remember that I love him, all the while, wishing that that was all he needed to heal his heart. This song, written a few weeks after,
contains most of what I had said to my boy. Realizing that my youngest
would also be asking me soon, I dedicated this song to both of them.

For Eric and Liam Son, I don't know what to tell you
Son, I wish I knew what to say
For what it's worth,
Son, he doesn't know how much you
miss him
Yeah, I know, Life doesn't seem quite fair. No, I'm not happy that he chooses
to run,
For what it's worth,
