In Memory of Sassy

February 10, 1984 - November 10, 2000

From November, 2000......

My old dog, Sassy, did well until the beginning of August. Then her muscles weakened to the point where she had a great deal of difficulty walking, and was unable to get up once she layed down. We were able to find very sympathetic veterinarian who would make a house call so she could be put down at home, but just four hours from our scheduled time Sassy rallied, and she improved to where she could get up and even got back to climbing the stairs.

We relished the reprieve we had been given, but on November 10, her condition quickly worsened.
The vet paid a visit that evening, and Sassy passed peacefully from our lives at 7:20 PM.

Sassy is now buried up in the mountains near Christy, our first Sheltie, and Ralph and George, the two Popp family dogs Jeff had during his teens and twenties.

Paula and I now realize that Sassy's passing marks the end of a substantial stage of our lives. The 3 Shelties we had during the early years of our marriage are now gone, and this has caused us to reflect on our growing kids, and how fast the years have flown.

Although I still miss my dog, I am coming to fully understand these wise words:

"I will turn to her as often as possible in gladness. I will even salute her with a laugh. The less I mourn her, the nearer I seem to her."

- C. S. Lewis
