MY FATHER

They said it was cancer
The "Big C"
The evil cells that eat away plans and hopes and dreams
But I couldn't hear the word
He was my father after all
Invincible

They said the operation was the cure
But it failed
So the procedure was repeated ... again ... and again
But I ignored the threat
He was my father after all
Unstoppable

They said they had to stop the treatments
Cure the pneumonia first
The cancer ran rampant, blowing up his head like a basketball
But I was blind to the warning
He was my father after all
Unbeatable

They said there was nothing more to do
Just keep him comfortable
What were they saying?!? What did they mean?!?
I refused to believe
He was my father after all
Immortal

I asked for time alone with him
I needed to tell him
Make sure he knew how much I loved him
Convince him to stay
But she said, "We'll see"
And didn't

Now he's gone and I cannot forgive
She stole them
Those few minutes I can never get back
Those words I couldn't say
When she said, "We'll see"
But didn't

For to her he was my 'step'-father
But to me
He was my father
To me
He is my father after all
Eternal
