THE EARTH MOVED
The walls began to sway, the floor to shake.
Was it nearby soldiers on maneuvers,
The force of their firing racing through the air to find me?
Books began to topple from their shelves.
I knew then that more was in the air ... in the earth ...
Than mere sound waves.
Falling books, breaking glass,
A continuing shudder of my once-solid home
Screamed, "Earthquake!"
Alone in my peril, I stood under the arch.
Seconds seemed like minutes as I waited,
Eyes wide with fright ... heart pounding to the rhythm of the moving earth.
At last it stopped.
No more shaking, no more swaying,
No more falling or breaking.
My heart still pounds at the memory of those few seconds.
The safety of my home was breached by nature,
A force I can't capture or arrest.
Will security return to my home?
In fact, perhaps.
To my soul, only time will tell.
