My life as a fibromaniac

What is a fibromaniac you ask?? Well, it is a person, usually female, who is suffering from a desease called Fibromyalgia. This curious desease is often not treated, or just waved off by the medical profession as either "all in your head" or "depression". Well, yes, depression is definately in there, since most of the time the doctors think you are looney!!

You see, Fibromyalgia does not show up on an x-ray... it does not show up in a blood test.. so you have yourself an invisible problem that won't go away and hurts continually!! But the doctors just look at you like you are nuts, or a hypocrondiac.

I went through all this for 15 years... waiting for someone, anyone, to figure out why I was a young woman running around in an old ladies body! No one would listen to me, they thought I was just a baby complaining about every little thing. FINALLY, I convinced my doctor to send me to a specialist. It took 6 months to get an appointment with him, but he ran me thru a series of tests, and finally confirmed my illness was NOT in my head.

There are certain points on your body, trigger points, and if they are pushed on with a MINIMAL amount of pressure, and you have fibro-- well, to say the least, you do sit up and take notice, because the pain is excruciating!!! I have since studied into this malady, and find it is inflamation of the soft tissue. The muscles and ligaments and tendons. Things that don't show on an x-ray. I like to compare it to.. well, when you take a uncooked chicken apart.. there is a very fine filmy layer of something that holds the skin to the muscles and the muscles to the bones. This is what is inflamed and NEVER stops hurting no matter what. Then there are BAD days when you have what is known as a "flare-up" and it is just double the misery!! ALso they have discovered that the fibromaniacs' brain is mis-firing. It spends its time sending signals all over your body telling it that it hurts everywhere. So I guess it really IS all in my head huh????

And tagging along with the pain, is the "myalsia" part. The terrible sleeping sickness. ( Fibro's buddy is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ). Most mornings it is litteraly like coming out of anesthesia. No matter what I do, how important the day is, what ever!!, I can NOT come to! It is like I am heavily drugged, and I am totally miserable. Then if I do manage to finally get out of bed, I am so stiff and sore that it takes over an hour to even be able to go down the stairs...all FOUR of them!!! It seems that if you lay, or sit, or stay in any position for any length of time, the stuff that lubricates your joints... it just gels..like jello! So then you get the horrible painful stiffness.

And of course, sleep is another impossible mission. At bed time, I have what I lovingly refer to as "the princess and the pea problem". I have to sleep on a 4" thick egg crate... the ones you get at the Medical Supply places. And I STILL feel like I am sleeping on a bed of rocks. And sleep comes very seldom. So funny, that it is so impossible to get to sleep, and when you finally do at about 4:00AM, then you can't wake up!
That in a nutshell is my life. I try and work and live like normal folks, but it sure does get annoying to hurt everywhere all the time.
I hope this sorta answered any questions in a very simple way. Please check out the fibro ring, and the links. There is much more information out there!! And meanwhile I just pray that God reveals the cause and cure to the medical profession soon!!
